Bungie, this encounter (destroying the oracles) is unfortunately not viable for squads with multiple deaf people present (it's possible, but not easily). If you have a few, those who can hear can perform, but the deaf players will only be left with the task of cleaning up without actually participating in the mechanics.
I'm worried because I like to teach deaf people the Raid mechanics, and the oracles are based exclusively on sounds, with no onscreen indications about their order. Thus, I propose the following modification:
In this encounter, display, above the super, a box similar to the Mitoclasta perk or the Trials of Osiris pass, with small squares that, when an oracle glows, it glows the square as well, in order. This way, a deaf person will have a visual indication that the oracle has lit up, and if he is looking at that oracle, he will quickly know the correct time to destroy it.
I'm still thinking of viable alternatives for the boss encounter, but ones that don't make the mechanics too easy. I'd like to know what you guys think about that.
IMPORTANT THING: Console players don't have a chat inside the game.

Edited by coda-jj: 6/1/2021 2:42:30 AMI’m a coda(child of deaf adult), I will help. Love my deaf family. Are you on PlayStation? I’ll help. I Can probably get one or 2 friends to help. Can probably also teach it to where you don’t have to communicate. If any deaf or hh person needs or wants help with anything. I will gladly assist

One of my best friends is deaf and I raid with him often. At the very least some sort of 'Oracle 1 chimes' message in the closed captioning would be nice for the oracles. There are quite a few things Bungie could do to help deaf folks participate in raid mechanics more efficiently. Basically make some sort of visual equivalent to every sound cue or put some words in the closed captioning.

How about a hexagonal icon that appears on the screen to the left side? For the first set of oracles, it could include a center piece for the mid oracle, and for the Atheon oracles, it would just highlight the oracles in order on the vertices, similar to the linked image

1 ReplyEdited by IsraelRegardie777: 5/29/2021 5:40:46 PMI'm a bit tied up so I have to admit, i have not read any of the comments.. Just wanted to briefly say, I help run a server with several clans, alot of our clanmates are deaf, or have asbergers, or autism, or ptsd etc.. My sherpas pride themselves on rainding (and I pride in GM Ordeal Squad leading), with anyone who has special circumstance. Everyone is very mature, i'm 36. My wife is also disabled, she has CRPS. So i know the struggle, and i also know how toxic the PC community can be.. https://discord.gg/gzbsR9CDyy is a personal empty nightfall template discord server i use, just so i can get to know people for 10 minutes before i send them on to the main server.. We have several clans, anytime, i'm NOT trying to clan recruit here, we actually cross lfg with smaller clans, thats a big part of it. Everbody helps each other.. And we get stuff done. I have almost 3000 hours in game now. I have another friend with 6000. Would love to have more raiders and those brave enough to attempt the Conqueror title in about a month.. I achieved Conqueror last GM season, and for those that play Nightfalls, you know the Proving Grounds is no joke, that was a load of fun.. They raid DSC and VOG on the daily, and Garden whenever a new light needs their div.. If you guys ever need help, and your deaf, dumb, both, or can't even speak english, my people can get your through the raids. And i can show you how to leave none alive in a master ordeal.. 2 man tac teams is NF Master ordeal is so fun.. My goodness. DM me, add me on steam, or just join my empty lil discord so we can chat it up and run something, and i can place you with friends, targeted to help your needs. This turned into a rant, i apologize for spelling and grammar, too busy to correct hehe. Do reach out though.. I love making new friends, and the 'disabled' population in D2 is one of the kindest, least toxic i have ever met, and you my friends, all are running that 100 resilience, 100 intellect double hundreds by default. Life is cruel to some.. Like the Carbon based beings we are, we are pressed inward, to the point of annihilation.. Some don't break. That's literally, how diamonds are made.. <3 IsraelRegardie777 SIDEBAR-- Kudos to the original poster, for being a good person.. I'm not easily offended, but lately the amount of people that dismiss other people of high intellect, becuase it is more 'convenient' for them, it just astounds me.. You sir, give me hope.. Eyes up Guardian..

5 RepliesInteresting A simple way to fix it is just paying close attention to your Oracle and each person remembers that number It could get complicated for someone that gets 5 or 6 because they wouldn't know when the sequence ended But this is assuming all 6 players are deaf, which is possible but unlikely, so a player who isn't deaf can take care of the last ones or give a signal indicating the sequence has ended It's a condescending advice I know because I was lucky to not be deaf but just an idea on how it could be solved

21 RepliesI am deaf and I completed oracles encounter contest mode with my deaf clan it’s take us about 3 hours And today I did take down all oracles myself keep practicing I know that suck for deaf people

The amount of hate this post got. Jesus.

2 RepliesAn easy solution would be to replace the white oracle blob with a small pattern of seven stars. So first oracle in sequence would flash 1 star, second in sequence would flash as 2 stars etc. No audio cues needed. Final boss room would also be a damn sight better.

1 ReplyIf you go in xbox party chat, there's an option for "show text" - this is a chat for the party where text will appear on everyone's screen for about 10 secs. There are spots where 1 person can see all oracles (right of Central oracles, about 3m off ground in a slot in the wall) Have 1 person assigned to purely calling these out and then they can enter the text or use xbox app to type faster via comp or phone Its not a perfect solution, but its workable. My clan and I did this for day 1 challenge mode.
-
Alternatively, they could also add a flare onto the screen, similar to what you have when being sent through time, just far less disruptive, that way there’s a visual cue without it being entirely limited to the text in the corner of the screen.

As someone who plays with a lot of deaf raiders, we have had no troubles what so ever. We just use third party sites i.e discord or worse comes to worse the psn messenger app on phone. You just have to pay attention to the blank destroyed oracle and count that to gind if its your turn or not.
IMPORTANT THING: Console players don't have a chat inside the game.
Bruh I remember playing Monster Hunter Tri on the nintendo Wii of all things, and even it had a text chat. Had to operate it with a wiimote lmao, still more than Destiny has.

You could have them emote whenever the Oracle pops up that way you have an indicator and when it’s their time to shoot that oracle someone emotes to indicate it for them

So ,let me get this straight ,You teach deaf people a raid encounter that relays on sound queues lol? yikes .. Its beyond me how you even communicate strats and positions, supers , loadouts , I don’t think you know what you’re doing or talking about ,you just set people up for failure .

2 RepliesWatch the oracles. Visual sightlines are your best friend anyways.
-
You only need 2 players minimum to do oracles, other 4 are add clear

I am deaf as well. I agree your post….

4 RepliesI’m Deaf too! :) I do agree with your post. Bungie needs to acknowledge they do have a number of Deaf players on Destiny. I didn’t do VOG raid because I don’t feel like going through mechanics that require sounds and communication... and most of the fireteams are unfortunately, toxic. I have done raids in the past where I’m the lone Deaf person on the team and the others were really helpful. I think it just depends on who you team up with. But yeah, Bungie needs to have a look at the mechanics with sounds. Not everyone wants to listen to sounds.

2 RepliesWhilst it’s good disabilities are catered for where possible, ie the colour blind settings, changing a whole game type which is reliant on communication to cater to a very small percentage of players is just not viable. There are many disabilities out there - severe anxiety, Tourette’s, motor neurone disease etc which will all inhibit game ability as well as many other aspects of life. The sad truth is not every disability can be catered for in everything.
-
Multi-level emote wheel would be helpful. Of course it would also only be if we had raid specific emotes, like numbers 1-9, compass headings, mechanic specific call-outs. (…As I, and others, have been suggesting for the past 4-5 years.)
-
1 ReplyThe game isnt designed and cant be designed for a full fireteam of deaf people :/ Its sad but logic, or else you just kinda ruin the possibility of adding many many strats in a team based gameplay. And if you have one just give him the add clearing role on oracles or type in the chat the number of his oracle. But yeah they could add a text in the chat for each oracle spawn for sure
-
1 ReplyTo be fair, if the mechanic was made for deaf players, then 50% of the challenge would be taken out. It would negate having to pay attention to the game and players would just run around staring at the boxes and then go kill the oracles. Dont get me wrong, it sucks that people ha e those disabilities BUT the game shouldn't be designed with that in mind. It would ruin it for everyone else

1 ReplyEdited by Hawpy: 5/30/2021 6:13:37 PMBefore I say anything else, I want to make it clear that I don't intend to sound mean-spirited here. My ask is this: how do deaf players get around mechanics that require any sort of communication? As you say, on console, there is no text chat and even if there was, typing with a controller is very slow. I know that emotes can be used in place of low-level callouts, but how would they describe symbols in Last Wish's Vault encounter, as an example? For Oracles specifically, I think the danger with making changes like the one you proposed remove any challenge that comes with figuring out where your Oracle is in the order, as you don't really need to care where anyone else's are. Maybe there could be an extra line in the feed that says "An Oracle has appeared" or something to that effect, but it would be very easy for it to get lost among people making Orbs, casting Supers and whatnot, especially in the waves that have 5+ Oracles spawning. If the concern is that deaf players can't tell when their Oracle has spawned, maybe have a buff/debuff (with no actual effect) that appears when you're standing next to an Oracle? Or maybe have the screen change colour (a blue tint, to reflect how they look?). It would have to be distinguishable from the colour change when being Marked, though, which might pose issues for colour-blind players because I have no idea if the colour-blind settings can affect things like that.

5 RepliesWhile I have sympathy for this issue, these are raids. They are designed to put people to the test, and are supposed to represent the ceiling of a games difficulty. There are two senses we can use to engage with games. Our sight and our hearing. Two. To ask the people designing these raids to reduce the amount of information they are directing to the player by 50% is unfortunately, in my opinion, unreasonable. The simple truth is that it is just a game, and to radically alter the experience for everyone else, based on a subset smaller than 1% is quite difficult to justify. There have been deaf players on raid teams in the past who used resources outside of the game to make up for the loss of information. That seems much more pragmatic than shifting that burden to everyone else/ the developers.
