I just don’t understand the motivation to force players into PvP when it’s a game mode they (Bungie) have given up on. Like, if you’re done with it, don’t make me suffer through it.

MONEY of course. The longer people spend on the servers wasting their money and time is a win for Bungie. They can show their investors flowcharts that the revenue is good and that the player base is healthy and growing.
