Upon opening a smuggling compartment chest on the Glykon I received the "Dead Man's Tale Catalyst" triumph, even though I have not yet acquired that catalyst.
This happened while attempting to solo the Presage exotic quest on Normal difficulty. I have never completed it on Master difficulty on my account, solo or otherwise. I opened a smuggling compartment chest and, along with the item inside, got the notification that I'd completed a masterwork objective. As I understand it, opening those caches does count toward the masterwork objective, so if I did have the catalyst that would make sense, I think. Though I'm still new to the game, I thought you needed the catalyst before you could make progress toward one of those objectives.
On the item detail screen for my Dead Man's Tale, I still have nothing to place in the empty catalyst socket (i.e. getting the triumph did not gift me the catalyst).
As I understand it, opening those caches does count toward the masterwork objective
That's correct.
I thought you needed the catalyst before you could make progress toward one of those objectives.
Not in this case. When I completed Presage on Master and applied the rifle's catalyst, my progress was already at 63% if I recall correctly.

Exactly the same happened to me, I wasn't even using the gun when it said that I had completed the catalyst. Originally I thought that catalyst had dropped from the chest. ~ Help me Bungie 1 your my only hope
