Why do people gatekeep this game so badly?

Its really unlike any other game I’ve played. In destiny people seem to mystify things like raids or trials or gms with some elitist attitude like only the “best” should be able to play. People push against things like matchmaking for stuff which would be an objectively good idea with a voice chat fix like...team game with no way to make a team ok. I think even d1 had an easier system. There’s a lot of stuff a lot of people are missing that make this game a lot more complicated then it needs to be. Trials is just pvp it isn’t some big thing. Anyone can play. Raids are just a long strike with mechanics. Just because someone doesn’t want to have to get there phone and discord just to play a free game doesn’t make you better. Do better as a community and make things less scary and maybe save this hemmoraging player base and hopefully bungie does too if they realize casual players will bring them money too. But I also wanna know why??? Why do people get so defensive when raid matchmaking is brought up or making trials a fair mode???

  • Its not that we are elitist we just dont have time to waste on shitplayers, because we are looking for a godroll armor/weapons not the first drop we ever get.

  • I would say it is because of the obscenely high amount of time they play the game. The reality is that deep down in the depths of their mind, in places they don't want to go, they know that they are watching their life go down the toilet on a fruitless exercise like playing Destiny. So instead of facing that fact and making some positive changes in their life, they inflate the importance of completing tasks in the game to convince themselves and others that they are doing something very meaningful. It's just classic denial.

    • Because Raid Matchmaking would be pointless. Six blueberries with no mics trying to complete Last Wish? Really? It’s not that we’re elitist, it’s that *lfg exists*. It’s built in to the app. If you need to learn, then join a post that says they’re teaching, or make one that says you need to be taught. The 60+ raid clear posts are for people who want to get things done fast. There are still people willing to teach and help. Trials is different though, as it is for high skilled pvp players to get flawless loot only. If an average player makes it flawless, good on them! They will cherish their loot wether it’s good or bad. But even if you’re not good at pvp, you can still get some loot from the end game bounty and the three win reward.

    • For raid matchmaking, I just think no one would use it unless they were a new player. And if only new players used it, then no one would know what to do. Why play with people who may not know what to do, without any coms, which is very much needed for a raid, when they can easily just get a better team on any LFG site

    • I appreciate everybody's opinion so I we'll just try to answer this objectively not from the standpoint of my opinion versus yours. I personally think the reason why a lot of people put some type of prestige or pride on getting to the lighthouse, or earning titles such as Flawless, Rivensbane, Blacksmith or Conqueror is because that is the toughest and most difficult end game content in those play styles. While I will 100% agree with you anybody that has an arrogant attitude over having a title against somebody who hasn't earn one is just nonsense and kind of an ignorant way to look at things. I can also see the other side of the coin as those are the toughest things to do in the game and completing those things should come with some sense of pride. But the rub another people's faces doesn't benefit that person and it certainly shouldn't make anybody that doesn't have those titles feel like less of a player. It's should be about having fun playing video games. Having a Flawless or Conqueror title is like winning the Super Bowl in Madden, it only matter to the person who did it.

Triails are just for the elitist types of peeps. So they can show off their new gear and brag later in PVE and get their a$$es handed to them in Nightfall and other community events! Personally i think there are to much PVP concentrated content. All the good loot are either in Crucible, Gambit or Trails. Not every person enjoys grinding dogtags in PVP especially with all his cheating going on. Why would you even want to sweat it out? Make it a level playing field. Cut off all the perks and give people one stat for every weapon. Just like Quake 3. Now that's PVP PVP should NEVER be forced upon people like some quests in this PVE game. That is completely the wrong way to go. I'd rather pay to get rid of it completely. Speaking of paying, why do you think all these "boost" sites are popping up? People value their time more than money. And to me that is cheating as well. Time for a reconstruction of D2 not just a perk in a weapon!

    • Raid matchmaking would be terrible. If you don't understand this, it's probably because you don't raid much and you think it's some solution that is going to be a magical completion-factory for you. Hint: it's not.

        • Yeah raids and trials are glorified when literally anyone can play the other day I played trials with 2 randoms and no mic and I ended getting some loot that's the first time I played trials since trials of the nine

          • Look, wether youre for or against matchmad raids. I can tell you with a certainty that using lfg will always be faster and yield better results. Matchmakng will attract literally everybody who uses no mic, or people who maybe dont even know what a raid is, and thinks its a big strike etc. 6 guys with no mic load into gos, ok now what? Who leads, who communicates who is doing which job? People quit out. So you reload. Then yo do this over and over unil you maybe find a group who can communicate. Its dead on arrival. So then the only answer is to dumb down raids to a point where the above rarely happens, and it becomes more like menagerie, where you can just guess your way through. And herein lies the issue.

            • Team based game with limited team finding capabilities. Use 3rd party websites and other crap to find teams. Wtf is that? I dont raid anymore but i know i wouldnt have wanted to try those with LFG people. But master nightfalls and pvp etc. There absolutely should be LFG for those and it should be in game.

            • Matchmaking trials I have no problem with. Matchmaking raids I do. Trials: you get enough jumpers, people just going for bounties, and sweaties who stomp first win cards as it is. Let matchmaking happens so people can get that one bounty done each week. Raids: matchmaking can't enforce a need for a mic. The mechanics in raids, for the most part, the need for communication and on things like console, you can't type. I know the argument here is "you don't have to use matchmaking". Sure. I don't. But I've played enough games where this sort of thing is implemented and you are suddenly bombarded with people complaining the raid is too hard and demanding nerfs. Now, for someone who runs a lot of raids, they can be very easy, but a demand to nerf raids to make matchmaking easier should be terrifying for anyone who enjoys them. Just my two cents. I don't think it's elitist. I also don't think it's unreasonable to expect people to have a mic and communicate. I DO think we need an in-game LFG system

              • The only person gatekeeping you from all the content is yourself. There are plenty of resources available out there to help you team up with other players and plenty of Sherpas out there willing to guide you through the various activities if you’re inexperienced. Everyone is free to set their own requirements for their raid team, whether the requirements are new player-friendly or 100+ clears. If you don’t like the requirements for one team, move to the next LFG post. Or better yet, create your own fireteam and set your own requirements.

                • In PvE people put up requirements because they want a quick clear. Not everyone wants to spend hours doing a raid. That being said, friends and I run a PvE Sherpa community on Xbox where we help people beat raids, dungeons and other endgame PvE for the first time - all free, because we want to help people. So there are both sides to it.

                • Gatekeeping is an illusion. Anyone can raid, anyone can do trials and anyone can do gms. I had a guy offer to help me with trials free of charge, just because we matched together in a comp match and he thought I had potential but needed some pointers to improve. I have offered help to many people here on the forums, rarely get a positive response. Make friends, don’t be anti-social, that is the true problem. Many guardians are willing to help, you have to be willing to BE helped and not hide in a cave like a hermit. People want to be born good, don’t want to learn, don’t want to improve. Gatekeeping is a myth, destiny players are often very willing to help, even carry. Get your head out of your ass, stop blaming everyone for your problems, be proactive and go get your loot.

                  • Because poor ability players can sap time from a group. The elitist does not want to waste that time and the poor ability player seems to feel entitled to the elitists time and ability instead of slogging through with others of equal ability. When you count on others for success you are at their mercy.

                  • Terrible take. I'm all for helping new players out in raids and such but it's so mechanic driven that if they aren't serious to get on discord (which is FREE) to just plug in and give minimal input when needed then I'm sorry I'm not wasting hours of my time to carry someone in a raid, if they don't really care themselves. This is where the elitist mentality comes in, and why you see less sherpas in LFG.
If you're too scared to talk with some strangers because you either have social anxiety or want a causal gaming experience then perhaps multiplayer is not for you
• The game is recent f2p, which was a horrible mistake to begin with. Matchmaking in raids would never work, how many times do you join a strike and get people on mic? You need to communicate in raids to get mechanics done, noone wants to be in a raid for over an hour because Johnny won't put a headset on, or in worse case scenario load in being the only person who has a clue what's going on. Raids need to stay the way they are in order for people to play with similar skill level people and avoid hours and hours of headaches......

                  • Not so much gate keeping as it is people seeking an experience. People do prefer to not have their time wasted. Hence why I run raids almost exclusively with my clan. It's always quick and clean unless we goof off. On occasion we teach people, and depending on the raid, this can easily triple the time taken due to two people not remembering what they were supposed to do or not listening. The best or better players will have a better experience, but newer players or lesser skilled players will need to do some growing and improving. But it will not be a good experience until they become better players. Got it?

                      • This thread has so many players with zero raid clears that we need to summon a Sherpa or two so everyone stops crying about the community “gatekeeping” them from activities.

People don't gatekeep. Other players allow their personal insecurities to keep them away. Yes anyone can play trials or raid, with no guarantee of success. The "best" will succeed while others struggle. How is it a difficult concept to grasp that some modes are geared towards better players? Those better players deserve a challenge as well. Anyone not good enough to get the desired results should focus on improving.

                          • i think at this point for raids it's players would like to be able to run all 3 characters through a raid in 2.5-3 hours. rather than spend 3-4 hrs guiding new player(s) and not even complete a raid. just a guess. i just started playing again for the first time in a couple years and would like to run the raids at some point but have not had much luck in LFG. but i remember running leviathan in an experienced group would take 45min to an hour for a completion. where if i would guide new players we would spend 3-4 hours and often times wouldn't complete the raid. this is why i'm not sure raid matchmaking would work. the encounters take teamwork, communication and an understanding obviously of what to do. Trials should absolutely have matching though. really pointless to lock that behind LFG.
