I tried watching a few, but after a while it got weird reading the subtitles and didn’t really see why people liked it so much.
Maybe it’s just the fan bases pushing me away? If you like it feel free to prove me wrong xd

3 RepliesDo you like cartoons such as Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls, the original Teen Titans, Thundercats, Castlevania, Steven Universe, She-Ra, RWBY or Avatar? Well congrats. You like shows whose designs are directly influenced by Japanese anime. And there's your appeal.

2 RepliesEdited by Cultmeister: 3/21/2021 2:38:17 PMAnime is a style of animation not a genre, I don’t see why people blanket it like it’s all the same thing. Ponyo =\= Elfen Lied =\= Yu-Gi-Oh!. It’s like saying you like or don’t like CGI films, when there’s barely a similarity between the 2007 Beowulf film and Hotel Transylvania. Those films have different appeals, and so do different animes. I generally will scroll past anime shows because I often find the visual style samey and uninspiring, and a lot of the plots forgettable, or too teen-oriented. However I’m always willing to watch an episode or two before I decide something definitely isn’t to my liking, and Studio Ghibli never fails to impress me. Subtitles are an acquired taste. I like watching with subtitles because usually the dubbed voice acting is terrible in comparison, and after a while reading is easy. That goes for any foreign language thing though not just anime.

Edited by Sumpig-2: 3/22/2021 9:18:19 AMSometimes the plot isn't garbage and animation isn't trash. And I enjoy it.
subtitles become no problem when you quickly read each new sentence Sometimes rewinding is ok
For awful self-insert fanfics.

Most fan bases are just the anime equivalent of the Destiny 2 Salt Mines. I would just enjoy the stuff for myself or maybe find a few friends that enjoy them.

For me it’s always been about fight scenes or the crazy concepts behind some of them. Akira, ninja scroll, DBZ, cowboy bebop, bleach, princess mononoke, attack on titan, EVA, mobile suit gundam. Just a few with really cool fight scenes or really wild ideas. There is really no limit to what you can do with anime. It just sucks that most of the modern anime is pretty stupid with really watered down stupid ideas like an anime based on a school that focuses on cooking competitions. Or anime that focuses only on hot girls that are annoying. I don’t like subtitles or the original Japanese voice acting either most of the time.

I've tried it but i just couldn't get into it.

You need to find one that suites your tastes. Even among anime fans, many believe that a vast majority of anime out there either sucks or doesn't match their tastes. If you don't like the subs, try looking for a dub. Dubs have been getting better more recently. There's always mangas/light novels too (the source material).

I find the anime look appealing. Characters look clean and easily identifiable when done right. As said before, you can generally do more (which is true of animation in general, but anime turns it up to 11). That being said, I don't watch much anime anymore, though I do enjoy games in that style.

Edited by Griseo: 3/19/2021 2:51:52 PMI'd ask the Weebs. But for what pushed me to not, it's that it's mostly frowned upon, weird, and outlandish where I'm from. The elitist fanbase is just another log on the fire

1 Reply1. You eventually get used to watching sub, but if you don’t like that I suggest watching dub. 2. Some fan bases are toxic/elitist, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying it.

I watch a few animes just because they get away with things, normal shows wouldn't

Anime is just like any other medium. Some of it’s good, some of it’s bad. Trying to explain its appeal in a single phrase is like trying to explain the appeal of every single single cartoon in existence in a single phrase. That’s just not really how it works. The appeal behind Shiki is completely different than the appeal behind Flip Flappers, even though both are anime. It does sound like a big issue of yours is subtitles, though. There’s plenty that are in english. You strike me as someone who would like Trigun for some reason. Might be worth giving a shot.

Edited by DreadMew: 3/19/2021 10:29:07 AMits completely understandable to not get into it, for me i like it for the memes and counter culture aspect. i haven't actually watched an anime for over a year cuz it's too much of an ordeal
i can't just watch one, i have to binge it.
to help you get into it, watch short ones that you see reccomended often. theres a lot of junk so id reccomend not just starting one on a whim. like movies, anime has a genre for everyone. good anime has talented, intense storytelling and is visually pleasing.. i started out only watching dub then moved onto subs once i got properly hooked.. now that i think of it Elfens lie was my first anime. that one is nuts

Some people like it for the plot. Others for the "plot". But seriously, with shows/movies that range from Anpanman to Gintama to Neon Genesis Evangelion to La Blue Girl with everything in between (and outside, for that matter), there's no one reason people enjoy it.

It's great for storytelling that most live-action shows or movies wouldn't achieve like CGI or pure action choreography. I'll admit most anime isn't good, but some are diamonds in the rough.

The only anime I can stand is Full Metal Alchemist, it’s fun. I’m not really into shows though, I prefer to play games.
