I've been trying to unlock the catalyst of my Polaris Lance, and I've noticed what has to be a bug; I know that for whatever reason, it doesn't count kills if the actual fifth shot finishes them instead of the explosion (which seems like an unnecessary complication if it isn't a big itself), so I made sure to shoot enemies with just enough health that the fifth shot leaves them alive, but then the explosion killed them. And yet, most of the time, the quest was not progressing. Is it only counting every three kills or something? Is there some additional complication I need to account for?
Honestly, just letting us progress it when the fifth shot kills them would be perfectly fine. We really don't need to make it more difficult than that.

I had this figured out perfectly in the castelum and got it done in about half an hour but unfortunately that area is no more. What I did (if i remember correctly) was 3 crits on an enemy, then 1 crit and a body on a legionnaire. This leaves the legionnaire with just enough health after the explosion for the burn damage to kill. Not sure where the best place would be to get this done now that Levi is gone but I'd assume somewhere on Nessus would work. Best to go solo though so you don't get anyone stealing kills. Hope this helps and you can finish your catalyst. P.S. I agree this is way too difficult and the fifth shot explosion should be the requirement for progress, not the burn damage.
