After seeing the new perk pools: Bungie has crossed the point of no return
Bungie has collectively gone and blown their entire creative load. I had been saying over a year ago that weapons should have more specialized, unique perk pools so that Bungie would have room to continue growing, but instead they continued the trend from Y1 to Y2 and decided to just put every good perk on every weapon. Every gun this season will be an upgrade to whatever was sitting in your vault, and nothing short of adding a third perk slot or straight up better base stats will ever replace them in casual playlists (Power creep LOL).
But what happens once they are sunset? Unless everything that comes after is just as good, then it's going to feel like another rotten downgrade for end game. No gun will ever be special again. Bungie has locked themselves into the loop of sunset and recycle the most favored perks, simply to continue the arbitrary player grind.
At this point might as well have a weapon system exactly like armor: get random stat sticks but can slot whatever perks you choose. After players get the roll they want then Bungie dangles some cosmetic that players can unlock through further challenge/activity completions. This is the only system that would give any sense to chasing legendary weapons, much like transmog armor. I fully understand why Bungie felt the need to put random rolls on exotics. . .because purples are the new blues. Every move Bungie has made this past year has killed the replay value of the game.
This season reeks of desperation and will be the peak of loot chase. . .Bungie has tripped over the summit and is tumbling down the other side. From here on out it's all downhill. Destiny is no longer a looter shooter, it's a campaign shooter that forces you to reacquire your weapons of choice every 9-12 months. I'm fine with just watching the story unfold if arbitrary grind every 3 months is the only way to engage with the content players actually care about. Normally I would stay for the replay value that PvP always brings, but Crucible and Gambit are in disastrous states right now. Glad I didn't buy BL and looks like it could be a very long time before I even consider reinvesting my time or money.
