Things have changed quite a bit at Bungie since their split from Activision. I had been with the company since shortly after Halo Reach (almost a decade). While some aspects have improved, such as reduced crunch, the studio seems to have lost a lot of appreciation for veteran talent. Out of necessity, Bungie needs to learn and hire a lot of the publication roles Activision provided, and studio leadership has definitely let the fox guard the hen house in this time because of it.
As a result, crunch has become a regular occurrence again, and burnout of the Destiny franchise is real. Many veterans are leaving to other studios formed by Bungie alumni or going elsewhere in the Seattle game dev scene. Those roles are not being backfilled, but rather replaced with a "do more with less" attitude, filling roles instead with contractors rather than full time talent we had been clicking on full cylinders with between the Taken King and Forsaken releases.
These factors have led to the poorest morale I've seen at the company, which has been declining since late 2018. Leadership says they understand, and will do better, but still keeps leaning into not backfilling jobs and waiting to align on a direction before it's too late to deliver. This has been most obvious on the Narrative and QA teams. Not seeing any improvement in sight, I sadly left the job I thought I would retire at.

I highly recommended you all read through the other reviews, it’s a great read

To anyone seeing this and thinking "wow this sure says a lot" This just sounds like a normal game dev studio. Everything this person is saying is really just the norm for devs. Crunch is the norm now, morale being low due to that crunch is the norm now, and the "no respect for veteran talent" just kinda sounds entitled, what do they want, a medal? Seriously, look at CDPR, R*, Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Ubisofts billion studios. Game dev environments have always been pretty shitty for the most part according to devs, how is this any different. Not saying this is right, but with the video game market being so focused on live service money machines this is and will be the norm until, or if games move away from this model.

Edited by LittleWitchAuz: 2/4/2021 7:12:38 AMIt doesn’t surprise me one bit. If anyone paid attention to alot of the most recent game releases and what leads to this. You’re going to notice a pattern. Here’s the pattern I recognize.
Game makes poorly made design decisions. These design decisions are usually obvious to figure out why they don’t work with the use of flowchart and QA. Player base gives a vast amount of loyalty to studios. Creating a yes-man like or can do no wrong atmosphere. Any differing opinions/criticism is never welcomed. Blaming older hardware or using technical-based excuses for poorly made design decisions not working. Regardless of any truth to the excuse. You’ll notice a lack of management in scope, budgets, and most importantly workload. You’ll see 2-3 leads moved to other projects. You’ll see those in a management position that make questionable decisions and say questionable things regarding development.
Sounds a lot like some of the advanced ship programs in the navy. I wrote curriculum, trained and certified the crews and ships. Biggest complaint was we are undermanned, overwhelmed and overstressed, but they wanted more with less because of the 2 3 and 4 star admirals who were in turn laying down to the secnav and his cronies. Meanwhile we saw ridiculously high suicide rates , poor attrition and too many corners cut sacrificing the safety of our Sailors..

I'm not surprised in the least to hear about any of this. I've had this sense since Season of the Worthy (or as most call it, worthless) that the game has been on the decline on the development and/or publishing end. Prior to BL, things were looking more or less fine to the consumer end, but I think more and more people are realizing that this game is only going to keep getting worse. I really hope that isn't the case, but I'm convinced that it's the truth.

Management has always been an issue and anyone can see that from looking at all the changes D1 went through. Just in D2, it has always stuck out like a sore thumb because there have been way too many changes that there is no consistency with anything they do with the game or company. Poor management affects everyone below them and when it affects the ones below them doing the actual work, it affects the game and as you can see the players.

This is sad to say but iv read the exact same post twice since Activision left. Different glass door reviews that all say about the same thing. Anyone who has played destiny for an extended amount of time could have guest any of this. It all shows in the game. Bungie doesn’t care about anyone that plays destiny let alone the game itself. They churn out crap so we pay them for it. Then we scream into the forum void after getting robbed. Next everyone gets hyped for the next crap delivery. Destiny isint a let down because it’s bad. It’s a let down because it was once so good and that what people expect. Instead bungie took our money and ran and yet people still keep sending them more.

Huh...where the hell is the Bungie boot-licking defense force now?

2 RepliesFirst I am making it clear, I do not work for Bungie, and I am simply being a friend and 3rd party observer here. This old employee's response is an example of an individual that feels entitled, and does not enjoy losing his sense of entitlement. I find little sympathy for your demand for respecting "veteran talent." What I see here is an example of an employee putting his sense of pride over his quality of living. I will keep you in my prayers, and hope you find the humility and the sense of purpose you seek. Till hopefully later, A considerate friend.

This is why restaurants don’t make it long. The idea is great in the beginning. Then the food starts to taste like crap because they cut corners. Then you drive by and it’s a Chinese buffet.

5 RepliesYou know what's interesting? Most of the poor reviews all state they're being over worked.... But what the hell are they working on?
-
3 RepliesAs a 30 year IT professional, and former QA team lead, I am sure the QA team has taken a hit... Given the horrible bugs Bungie has missed over the last year.

2 RepliesActivision kept Bungie in check. This is what happens when you Luke and the team slack off. Activision are the good guys. Look at how Modern Warfare turned out. AMAZING. F Bungie and the drip fed content. The story missions are the empire hunts. The statis perks are the empire hunts. Weekly missions are Empire hunts.. Variks missions are Empire Hunts.. Beyond Light sucked.

Bungie lazy now and always have an excuse for everything
-
You mean to say that leadership is "listening" to the employee's concerns? The irony.
-
1 ReplyThey mention of crunch is weird since bungie has been known to be very against crunch since halo 2.
-
1 ReplyI've been wondering something for a while now, are there any employees at Bungie currently who even worked on Halo?
-
Not surprising. TBH this explains the current situation very well.
-
Not surprising. Interesting though.

1 ReplyMicrosoft just needs to buy Bungie back, give 'em a bunch of cash and let them go to town. #makebungiegreatagain

17 RepliesThanks for the transparency. I’m sure quite a few of us knew things weren’t working as smoothly as they should within the company. I hope they restructure before it’s too late.
