Why 10 Players Left Destiny 2 Over The Years

I wanted to write this topic sharing a very interesting discussion I had with some buds I have been gaming with for a few years now, but all no longer play D2 (I am the only one left playing at this point). We still interact on a regular basis via raiding in other games so believe if you want for fabrication. Before I begin let me say this is going to be completely focused on PvE. They aren't PvP players in any game really so keep this in mind. These are the top reasons why they all have left D2 via disappointment in the game. 1) Lack of long term goals. In PvE players have 0 long term goals in Destiny 2. No, ritual weapons are not long term goals. Long term meaning reasons to get on for over 2 months somewhat consistantly to work towards. The raids aren't the PvE end game in Destiny 2, its GM nightfalls, which are counterproductive as there is no reason to ever do them, even with the arrival of 'flawless' versions coming next season. These are season to season goals, not an ENTIRE EXPANSION GOAL. 2) End game is not good. GM nightfalls by design are disappointing, unenjoyable, and not worth grinding for. With the only changes to them being negative modifiers, power capping, and champion spam they provide 0 enjoyment in actually doing them. They are just pain. End game doesn't just mean pain, it also means a challenging, demanding, but creative experience. GM nightfalls need meaningful changes to them to warrent being 'end game'. If you have to be selective about picking GM nightfalls then those nightfalls need changes exclusive to them that change up encounters, and allow more flexibility in builds besides just cram as much damage mitigation so you don't get one shot by a random sniper. Champions are not good enough. 3) Lack of Raid support. Now we are pretty heavy leaning raiders. Destiny doesn't support raiding in its current form. In D1 there was the bare minimum support for raiding. Hard modes with minor changes to encounters with exclusive gear only in hard modes. Hard modes were designed for the end game power which meant you couldn't just blow right through it as a joke until a year or more later on. D2 now has 1 raid difficulty that was argued to be the only 'true version'. However, this 'true version' is nowhere near complex, demanding, nor even built around end game players. Its a stepping stone of progression towards GM master nightfalls after day 1. Watch a youtube video and you can clear a raid in a few hours. That isn't normal. I know some think it is, but it really isn't. Raiding is known historically to be an investment, which is why most games have raiding as the end game to be a reason you invest into playing and improving in the game both as a player while also improving your gear. At this point you could almost make raiding in D2 matchmade. More difficulty levels, more changes in those difficulty levels for encounters to expand them, let raids be the end game for Destiny again. 3) Armor 2.0 feels great, but the game seems to play as if we are still using Armor 1.0. Investing into builds, stats, min maxing, masterworking, or creativity for PvE is almost 100% a waste of time. The entire game outside of 1 activity in PvE requires 0 investment into your character outside of power. GM nightfalls which only allow a defensive/survival build. The RPG additions only serve PvP. Build future content around the creativity of armor, and give us more creative build mods to change things up that are permanent additions to the game. 4) Sunsetting is FINE. However, it was too rapid/sudden and Bungie has been unable to support the idea of it due to the lack of new gear replacing the old. Relying on reissues rather than brand new gear is not sustainable, nor enjoyable to players. 5) Lack of creativity in new activities. It feels like every 'new' thing Bungie makes is just a rehash of something they have already made with no improvements. Much of the new activities are half baked instead of fully fleshed out with depth, made for the super casual playerbase to play for 2 hours before they are done, while everyone else feels burnt out in 2 sittings. There are other issues that they spoke about but these were the top reasons my group spoke about why the left D2. It feels like its stuck in the mud regardless of how much Bungie swears they are changing the game, only for it to be in minor ways instead of major shake ups or creativity.

  • Unfortunately people keep playing casino games and just can’t figure out it’s just dangling the carrot. Little temptation keeps you paying for possible change. They don’t care. It’s about money and the cheapest way to get you pulled back in. Cinematic cut scenes are baiting people. EA is great at this. They don’t care if you or your friends play. They just want you to buy games. There are a lot of YouTube videos on this type of addiction. Destiny will never be perfect just playable.

        • Grandmasters should all be around the difficulty of Inverted Spire or Disgraced, Exodus, Broodhold even. A strike like Glassway and Scarlett Keep shouldn't be a Grandmaster. I also would like hard mode raids considering the one difficulty is just easy mode.

A point of yours that caught my attention is the inability to truly make gearing your character matter. Destiny would benefit greatly from things like "+25% Auto Rifle damage" "+50% damage while hipfiring with handcannons" or ways to just really chain spam abilities. There is very little thought required into gearing your character and every player does the same amount of damage. The lack of ways to increase your damage also leads to a majority of weapons in destiny forever being unviable because players will always choose the overpowered Special or Heavy weapon. Imagine being able to make weapons like Suros Regime, Cerberus+1, and Polaris Lance endgame viable. Like you would be able to pump all of your stat increases and skill increases into a very powerful primary build at the expense of having your Heavy slot locked or some other kind of penalty. This is an extreme example but I guess I mean there are very little resources to play how you want. You can't just pick any weapon and do Endgame content.

            • My clan has a wierd history. Formed a month before beyond light dropped with a healthy 70 active members after a few weeks. When beyond light dropped people stopped playing. Nobody had been on in weeks. So me and the few members who still had hope created a new one. It was going well for a month then the feeling That there was nothing to do came in. Now very few players are active. Nobody wants to play this game anymore. Its just boring and i dont know if i will ever play again with sunsetting in full effect.

I want to play more Destiny but I just have no clue what it is I am supposed to do. I can't farm for Hawkmoon rolls because I'm a single character player and have to run it after a third weekly reset to be allowed to farm the rolls. A sigh and a snore. I have no interest in GM nightfalls. I don't find pure pain to be a good challenge and anyway, my clan doesn't run these. Even if I did do that I'm most likely to get bad stat exotic drops and some materials I could also just farm for in other ways, and feel like an add on to force grind anyway. I am the kind of player that views raids as one and done. I do enjoy doing the dungeons, I think I am just not a fan of 6 player activities, someone always wants to get it done already rather than enjoy themselves. Dungeons are 3 people so you're ensured people are there to hang whether long or short. I have tried farming the legendary lost sectors but you can spend an hour running these and only get a couple enhancement cores. Who cares. I can do the same thing running hero nightfalls. With no variety to the encounters I'm just not interested in spending a day boring myself for a single good drop. I am thankful they made changes to Gambit and enjoy it a lot more and it feels like I can flex my end game stuff there. But there's absolutely nothing to earn from Gambit. So I'll play a few matches but then log off. It feels pointless. Crucible. Kind of the only other place that feels like end game to me because having master worked gear feels like it matters and gives you those slight edges. And you can just play a bunch and have variety. But the matchmaking feels really unbalanced in quick play, the survival changes made survival suck, elim is just sweaties waiting for trials to come back leaving me with...rumble? With the one guy that's way too strong for the whole lobby. These play lists feel ancient, like, old school match making, old school gaming philosophy, and then there's also nothing to earn but your own improvement. Lately all I do is farm patrol because at least there is stuff to earn and newer feeling activities with bosses that are better designed than strike bosses. But that's getting old, too, and I don't need end game gear for any of it.

              • Nice post. But its indicative of why there is so much discontent in the community. Basically its because we are fractious community with our own ideas and expectation of what this game should be. Few of us are willing to compromise with people with other views....and constantly holding Bungie "accountable" to things they never promised. Or even explicitly stated they did not want to do. This is why, imo, this game needs to shed players. Because there is NO one version of this game that will ever please this current player base....so until that happens, all you're going to get is this endless tug-of-war over this game between competiing factions with different agendas and visiosn for the game. In short, there needs to be a "Unification of Vision" for the game among the player base.....and that process is actually taking place right now.

YES I get it the game is in a terrible state right now and may never recover. Until I find a game out there that can match Destiny's Gunplay and overall Mechanics, I will continue to play casually until the end of all days in 3 to 4 years time. You do know it's going to end soon right? 10 year plan is almost here.

                  • GMs are not fun. I was ecstatic when I got the conqueror seal, I mean jump for joy, shout out loud happy. Only first day raid completion could compare with that feeling(if I had done it). They are hard, but I play every game hard mode, and I like it that way. Opinions are allowed to differ, you and your buds are not the center of the universe.

Bungie only cares about hamsters who come on every day or two, grab and complete all the bounties from every NPC. They’re shaping the game around them, and expect them to spend more on Eververse. Look at the numbers, look at the percentage of players above season pass 300, now look at daily log ins. Make the maths. Yeah there you go.

                    • I would not like raiding to take longer as long as it is done right. I did an lfg fireteam for the boss fight and for the very first time, we did it first try in under 2 minutes. We one-phased, we ran bubbles and wells, and even when we almost both dropped the bombs in the same bin we salvaged it and didn’t wipe. I think that if your fireteam is good like that and can recover after problems, that raiding should not have to take hours and hours. The solo player experience is already limited enough.

                    • One of the big positives Bungie hit a home run on, was secret missions, I'm talking hidden content ie black spindle /whisper kinda stuff. They first hit it with vog, as there were many areas, that were left from the big chop before release, and mixed with secrets. This was a great time in the games history.
Thought Bungie were into secrets etc.......
Anyway, obviously they've done more since, but over egged it, by making it too complex on occasions, or streamer focused. Usual content is usual content, and op covered it quite well. However additional meaning to the game is always welcomed, and having a reason to play outside of shooting shit, collecting shit, or chasing an elastic power cap, is desperately needed. Having mystery to something is cheap, repayable and elusive. How many times did we explore vog, or trying to understand the maze, the oracle's, vex mythoclast sights - did seeing the vault through a vexs eyes do anything, the list goes on! Didn't need constant spoonfeeding of new content, just a big bag of secrets and mystery. Nowadays it's run, gun, collect and cry there's nothing to do. Bungie had the winning formula, it was renowned for building secrets..... But for some reason, decided to go the opposite way...... Go figure?

                        • Everything you said is true except for sunsetting. Sunsetting was just a huge lie bungle told us to get all our guns and then give them back to us so we had to grind for a new god roll. Sunsetting armour is just as ignorant as luke smith. If anything they could sunset pinacle weapons but they are to lazy to make those as well. We can't even get vendors updated to current stuff. Bungie is just a HUGE FAIL. I don't see them ever doing anything good let alone great.

D2 came out, and the enthusiasm was clearly lacking, but we kinda stuck with it. Until they all slowly left. I was the only one left, and I’d play it casually. A few times a couple came back and played a week or two. Now, after this season we are all gone. I miss those days, but they are gone forever and yeah, Bungie is partly to blame as well as time. It’s unfortunate that fun can’t be had anymore in a universe I still love, but has been destroyed by the actual true Darkness. The devs themselves.

I have 300 friends that I made from D1. None of them played now after D2 launched. They slowly died off after that fiasco. They are still my friends and they never came back to D2 after that, at all. Everytime I check my list, they are playing something else. I still kept playing after that. Stuck with D2 for another 3 years. Gained 200 new friends just from D2. Last time I checked, only less than 50 played D2 out of 200. Even the guys I've made friends with during the life of D2 are dwindling down. I quit months ago just about several months before Beyond Lite. I don't like the direction of the game anymore. I knew this was coming. So I quit. Didn't buy Beyond Lite and have no interest in even finishing this franchise anymore. Not coming back! Thnink about it. From Halo to baking cookies?... WTF! The Game is so bad you are playing with Fairies and Unicorns! Get it?... Fantasy Land baby!!! 😂😂😂

                              • The only friends (other than my RL friends who actually were the ones who got me started with Destiny, and they're all gone!) in my friends list are from Destiny. (my main account, this is an alt) Out of 100 Destiny friends, 3 are on right now. I think I've seen as many as 7 in the past couple months. My clan of 100 people is down to 18. And I've had 3 other clans die of attrition before this one. This game just doesn't keep most people around, which I guess means those of us who are still here are actually the oddballs.
