Dear Bungie the Destiny 2 competitive playlist is lacking in an incentive to play in the current state of the game. There are few reasons to play the game mode except for the light level grind at the start of each season and the occasional new light guardian that wants to experience the high intensity game mode for the first time.
The Old and Flawed Incentive. When Competitive was reworked and came out in forsaken there were rewards that guardians could grind for. These rewards included Luna's Howl, Not Forgotten, Recluse, Revoker and the infamous Mountaintop. These were great incentives for guardians to venture out of their comfort zones and brave the high intensity games that were found in the Competitive playlist.
The reason this incentive was flawed was because of how incredibly well these weapons performed in day to day activities in destiny and how exclusive they were. With how incredibly these weapons performed it eventually led to the majority of them getting toned down to become trophies that we could look at in the vault. Which is not the greatest feeling for somebody that worked so hard for a specific reward.
The Solution. Understanding that Destiny is a looter shooter and giving loot for completing or competing in all activities is essential, but seeing as the rewards from specifically the Competitive playlist became un useful and a memento of past accomplishments is a statement that something needs to change if the playlist is to stay populated. Destiny PvP players specifically have been asking for some kind of attention and incentive to play Destiny PvP again. With the gunplay being the best it ever has been in Destiny this urge for "content" is overwhelming. With a small amount of tuning towards stasis and rework of the Competitive playlist it could provide PvP players with a great incentive to play again.
The Proposal. Looking at the competitive nature of PvP players in Destiny 2 there needs to be something that provides for their needs outside of the loot based game mode "Trials of Osiris". The proposal is a more advanced ranking system. Keep the rank names of the old comp and a similar point system. The more advanced version of this is to let people continue to push the points up past 5500, lower the rewarded points from each game, remove win streaks and give points for kills in games. Of course with each increase of rank losing games would cost you points. The losing team would lose more points the higher the rank they were. With each rank of the Competitive playlist if a player holds the rank by the end of the season they are rewarded an emblem and an aura that can be equipped over the head of the player (like the old nightfall emblems). For example if a player stayed in the Mythic rank till the end of the season they would receive a Mythic emblem and an aura over their head that came with running that emblem. This would provide a small but rewarding incentive to play the Competitive playlist again. For players that want to take it to the next level at the top of these ranks there would be a top 500-1000 rank based off the highest amount of points that a player had at the end of the season. This would give an emblem and an aura to those top 500-1000 players thus removing the advantage of the exclusivity and domination that came with Not Forgotten in Season 4. This would provide an incentive to play the Competitive playlist giving rewards that show off a guardians high skill without providing them an item that dominates normal activities.

1. Guardian (0 rank points) (Guardian I, Guardian II, Guardian III) players would receive the Guardian emblem and aura.
2. Brave (Brave I, Brave II, Brave III) players would receive the Brave emblem and aura.
3. Heroic (Heroic I, Heroic II, Heroic III) players would receive the Heroic emblem and aura.
4. Fabled (Fabled I, Fabled II, Fabled III) players would receive the Fabled emblem and aura.
5. Mythic (Mythic I, Mythic II, Mythic III) players would receive the Mythic emblem and aura.
6. Legend (5,450 to 5,500 rank points)[3] players would receive the Legend emblem and aura.
7. Top 500-1000 points earned by players past 5500 would receive a special emblem and aura.

Bad player should go there to learn PvP before hopping into the harsh world of Quickplay. You want incentives and rewards for the NewBie Mode? Funny!
