TL;DR: Launch the game using the GeForce Experience and not the steam launcher. This instantly fixed the problem and it hasn't crashed since.
Hey all, I was having hugely annoying issues with not being able to get past the character select screen without Destiny 2 crashing with the error message of:
Problem reading game content. Please close Destiny 2, right click on Destiny 2 app in the Steam app to run 'VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME FILES...' in 'Properties'. Then restart Destiny 2 to try again.
Not only did verifying the integrity of the files not work, but it's actually a pretty unhelpful message because, rom my understanding, this isn't a message that Destiny 2 is sending us. Steam is sending us this message due to a hard-crash that Steam assumes is because of the Destiny 2 files. Which it isn't.
This was an infuriating problem for me because none of the solutions were working for me. That included:
- Verifying the integrity of the files
- Uninstalling and reinstalling the game
- In steam, going to Steam --> Settings --> Downloads --> Delete download cache
- Trying to delete the 'steamapi64_dll' which didn't actually exist in my file system
- Moving files from the bin folder to the main Destiny 2 directory.
- Unchecking the Destiny 2 folder's "read-only" setting, which constantly reverted itself back anyway.
None of that worked. You are welcome to try all of those steps, but I highly recommend trying this first:
- Launch the GeForce experience
- Click on Destiny 2
- Click Play
I haven't had any issues with the game since!
