PVP please let guardians choose their matchmaking algorithm

Currently Destiny PVPis an utterly miserable experience for me and a large number of other players, because of the matchmaking. We have gone from a situation where a small, but very well represented group of high profile players where having a poor experience, to one where a larger number of very poorly represented players are having a far worse experience. It is quite clear that for some players CBMM provides a much better experience in the crucible, but at the same time is is equally clear that for many players CBMM provides a much worse experience, to the extent that large numbers of players are now just playing the 3 matches per character they need for their pinnacle and then getting out. There is a simple solution available to solve this problem and allow all guardians the chance of having a decent PVP experience. This answer is so simple that I don't think most people are aware of it. The answer is to let guardians choose which matching algorithm to use for their matchmaking. What I see happening is that the top x percent will choose CBMM almost all the time. The bottom x percent will choose SBMM all the time, and in the middle we will get an interesting mix. As a person who loves Destiny PVP I find myself in a position where there is only one playlist I can currently play (Survival). Everything else is unplayable. Now instead of looking forward to playing PVP I find myself avoiding it as much as possible. This makes me sad and angry Please Bungie listen to a wider audience than just the streamers and youtubers. Give guardians a choice with matchmaking. PVP should be fun for all guardians.

Bless this post, but I'm starting to think MM preferences are above people's understanding for some unexplainable reason. This literally worked in Halo For the uninformed, Destiny has never had true Matchmaking preferences Segregated playlists is not what you do when trying to offer choice It literally puts it at the mercy of the population, that is wrong.

      • They did this previously most of the players picked the SBMM playlist leaving the higher tier players stuck in the CBMM playlist. YouTubers and "elite" players hate regular players having choice because normal players dont want to play with them...

        • As a current PVP bottom feeder that's trying to learn the current system fails us. I spend countess hours in crucible grinding my ass off learning the map, shadowing the top players in the match watching their moves etc. but I can only last so long as getting your ass stomped match after match gets frustrating beyond belief. There needs to be a better system where us unskilled PVP guys and gals can battle it out and still get more than a few kills and have fun. The crucible learning curve is real and there has to be a better system so we can grow the number of players as well as hone our skills.

        • Except there’s a problem with your theory. Those players that only play 3 games for their Pinnacle... Only play 3 games for their Pinnacle even with SBMM in place. THATS a FACT. And there’s no such thing as CBMM in Destiny. Every lobby still has lobby balancing in play. Which by definition is a form of SBMM.

        • Stop this crap. "SBMM" never worked. It never matched you against your skill level peers. All it did was keeping your win/lose ratio at 50%, by always making outrageously disbalanced teams. This way algorithm could ensure a guaranteed win for one side (made of those who had w/l below 50%) and a guaranteed loss for the other team, who dared to sway above 50%. Also, there is no CBMM either. You'll see laggers from all over the world in every lobby.

          • If bungie actually had servers and secured them with the same priority of making stupid emotes for eververse then no one would have a problem. Also yes I don’t have a problem with eververse as a whole because it keeps all the miscellaneous crap out of normal loot pool. But getting rid of emotes would help putting one big step forward. Next getting rid of pvp altogether from the general of the game and make pvp a separate entity from the game then this would not be an issue either.

            1. Your first paragraph is false. SBMM had negative affects for anyone who was above average. That's 40% of the population. Yes, the higher up the ladder you were the more noticeable the effects were, but they were still there regardless. 2. Splitting the population sets up both sides for failure, as the effectiveness of both algorithms are dependent on population. If you want to choose, fine. Choose. But someone who chooses SBMM should be able to match a similarly skilled opponent who chose CBMM, provided the connection criteria is met.

You do have an option. Sbmm is in comp and cbmm in qp. If you only play for a pinnacle drop it's only 3 games, why should the game cater to people only playing 3x a week?

              • No. The game does not have enough players to support matchmaking preferences or SBMM in general, it already struggles to fill the lobbies with players that are even on the same continent. Even if the playerbase was bigger, SBMM should never be used outside of a ranked mode. 6v6 is chaotic and casual, its perfectly fine to have a mix of skill levels.

              • unfortunately it wont work mate, the population isnt big enough to split the matchmaking. the que times would become an issue for a lot of "high profile" players and it would get reverted.

              •
This answer is so simple that everyone and their mother is already aware of it.
FTFY. And they've tried versions of this with SBMM/CBMM specific playlists and unfortunately the psychological terror of possibly facing people who are better keeps the vast majority of average players opting for the SBMM choice. This then makes the choice for the better players be: "Would you like us to find you terrible connections using a CBMM algorithm or terrible connections using a SBMM algorithm?" The only way I could see this working is if they give absolutely zero incentive for going into SBMM. Make it like private matches where its just play to play with no rewards or quest/bounty completions. Then the option is there for folks who very much want a SBMM experience but doesn't drive people away from the CBMM areas so the connections suffer there.

It makes me wanna cry this is so not true. The worst thing that top tier players have to deal with is "team balancing" where if matchmaking is set to being more strict and its time for them to lose they are given the appearance of having to play with bad players. Other than that, even under "SBMM" the overall quality level of the way the game works for them is still first class. There just aren't enough players in the game to have choice and with what the game is actually doing it just can't do that too. It literally can't do that and then end up with anything that it could use to stay running in such a way that is apparently fooling a lot of people. Having choice would only lead to the game running more like crap for everyone. And tbh, I'm starting to feel like if the game is going to work like it is now then every single person who plays it should get the same level of environmental quality as the person who is getting the worst. If you are going to have something where people are playing each other fairness needs to come before everything else.

                    • I’m not against having the option to choose, but it isn’t just elite players that benefit from CBMM. It’s more like the top 50%.

                    • Also, I am in a bottom 5%. I will still always prefer CBMM (or even totally random matchmaking) to any "SBMM" they could come up with.
