Is there a "how to use Discord with Destiny" FAQ?

I've been trying to do a raid. Everyone wants Discord. Well I signed in, and joined the chat. All I could hear were those using the in game chat. (Which seem perfectly fine to me.. don't know why I also need Discord) But I couldn't hear Discord. Eventually they wanted to kick me so I left. Is there a FAQ or something that will help me navigate the LFG and what hoops I need to jump through just to enjoy the content Destiny has to offer? So frustrating...

  • I give up. Everyone wants Discord. And something with my setup causes me not to hear anyone on discord. Guided game, you're my only hope.

    • Let me try to help you. Why do people use Discord? It has become the default application for voice chat while gaming on PC, like TeamSpeak and Mumble were a few years back. Destiny's in-game voice chat runs through peer-to-peer and relies on every player having a properly configured network and their internet service provider providing them with a decent NAT service when a public ipv4 or a ipv6 address are not available. Discord has servers instead, so it's simpler for everyone. Why you can't hear anyone? Discord picks up your default audio device in Windows for output by default. Destiny picks up your default audio device for the game sounds and the default comms device for voice chat. If you set up in Windows' Audio Control Panel your headset, for example, as the default audio device and default comms device, it should work without issues. If you still have issues, in Discord's settings you can choose your output and input devices too. The "Voice & Video" tab will allow you to select from a drop-down menu your output and input devices, control volumes and some other features. There's also a mic test, you can use it to test how people will hear you and if it's outputting to the correct audio device. I see that you have a clan, my recomendation is that you setup a Discord server for your clan, it's free, and there you can get more familiar with how it works. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

I’m not sure why people don’t use the in game chat, except that given all the bugs in the game I assume there are some issues with chat too. Also, I think discord is great so I’m happy using that. I don’t think there should really be anything special required to use discord with destiny. They should just be totally separate. If you get discord audio input and output working, it should work fine when you’re playing destiny. I’m sure there are some introductions to voice chat in discord out there on the web somewhere. I know there’s an extra option that needs to be enabled to use discord push-to-talk when you don’t have discord window up, but I don’t think that should be the case for general audio output. It’s not ideal, but one workaround would be running discord on your phone.
