Apparently d2 is mostly based around "Luke's Fantasy land". He states that apparently supers like nova warp don't fit the "warlock identity" so they are going to cut it.
Apparently he liked the idea of titans not having a roaming super in d1 year 1. Because it matched their "identity" even though it was a big complaint from titans mains back then. But community feedback doesn't matter as "Luke's Fantasy Land" is the biggest priority.
"As classes have gotten new Supers over the years — during Taken King, Forsaken, and Beyond Light — there’s been less of a reason to bring multiple different classes to a raid or Nightfall." (Author)
This is delusional and simply not true. Back in d1y1 you never brought a hunter into a raid. They had no place. In d2y1 titans were only good for melting point and that was it, it wasn't until banner shield that titans were used in last wish.
In beyond light all the stasis subclasses are being used equally, until they nerfed warlock to the ground.
So either the balance team and people who make the subclasses aren't doing good at making all the subclasses shine. Or the director and author are wrong with how they see the game. I'm going to go with the second option.
The balance team had buffed the older classes to make them relevant.
-Solar class buffs
-Arc Week buffs
These updates made some of the useless subclass trees very good. Think bottom tree striker, Top tree Dawnblade, Top Tree Arcstrider, and much more.
What made destiny have its IP identity is not the subclasses. It was the loot, the mix of pvp and pve. The first FPS raids, the exotics and the fact the studio that brought you halo made a new game.
If I wanted a golden gun I could play golden eye, if I wanted a smash attack I'll play Black ops 3 or 4. Subclasses are not destinys identity.
People like nova warp, they just want to see it BUFFED. Where did luke get the idea people wanted forsaken supers removed. They shipped with the expansion that brought life to a dying game.
All in all this artical is delusional and is a twisted "Fantasy Land" that should never become reality. The communitys feedback should matter more then one person's "Fantasy Land".
Major edit
To clarify. I'm in favor of stasis layout for old subclasses. But cutting supers such as nova warp shouldn't happen. The forsaken subclass trees are cool, they shouldn't be removed.
While they didn't announce anything. We have to let them know never to attempt this.
This is something they should quickly address in the twab. I know they work on it the day of release. Just a quick sentence or two to address the concern.
There's a simple fix, and they already have the answer. Pick one tree for each light subclass, and allow the aspects and fragments from the new system to create the other trees/abilities. Nova Warp could become primary Void super for Warlocks, and aspects/fragments could allow your Warlock to channel all that energy into a single massive void explosion, ie Nova Bomb. Top tree Dawn Blade could become primary, with aspects/fragments allowing you to thrust your flaming sword into the ground, creating a Well of Radiance. Other aspects and fragments could add the abilities of bottom tree Dawn Blade and healing grenades from middle tree. For arc, bottom tree would become primary, with aspects and fragments enhancing it with top tree perks like chain damage and blinking during super. They could also add an effect like the other subclasses, allowing you to channel all your super energy into a single attack, ie Chaos Reach. It's an easy enough compromise that keeps everyone happy.

11 RepliesIt is a epic win, just remove STASIS , remove spectral blades, Remove hunter from the game , broken class. invisibility = no talent, jump shoot , no talent. sunset now STASIS and forever gone with this non talent pvp ability

This is what happens when you get a journalist to do a game designer's job.

I would by lying if I said middle tree solar Titan is what I wanted from the "new" super back in Forsaken (I wanted something more like the Axe from Rise of Iron rather than "spin to win") but there is no way I would want it removed, hell I was one of those people that thought Nova warp was OP as shit and needed a nerf (Just not as hard as they did) and again NO I do not want it gone (WTF gave him that idea), now if Bungie was proposing that we CHANGE the current light classes to something similar to the Stasis tree where we pick and choose from all the perks each element has that would be good, but I doubt that is what they are thinking.

Looks like 343 is Sunsetting legacy Halo games EPIC FAIL

I absolutely agree with what Luke is saying there. The classes all feel the same, I’m fine with them cutting my Warlock’s top tree Dawnblade to make Solar Warlocks more support-based, or cutting Nova Warp to make Nova Bomb pop more. Turning FOH back into a single-use. The classes need more identity to them, and it’s not like the subclasses will be not getting anything new. Trading top tree Dawnblade for spiffy new Aspects to change my Well would be an easy trade.

2 RepliesIts called vaulting not sunseting

1 ReplyI don’t get why they have the vision of maintaining the same sized game every expansion. If they add 30 weapons, 15 pieces of armor and 2 locations, they’re going to remove 30 weapons, 15 pieces of gear and 2 locations In the process. what they give they also take. It literally doesn’t matter how much they add into any category of the game because they’re going to take the same amount away leaving the game in the exact same position it was content wise. Very frustrating coming back after 3-4 months or so, to find half of any items, materials, etc. I Don’t think Ive ever played a game that takes out as much content as they’re adding, making the game feel like it came to a halt

2 RepliesJust by looking at the next next dlc titles it's kinda obvious that some supers were gonna be cut. Look at the dlc name called lightfall. I can see 1 of 2 options the traveler is gonna run like a little B**ch or 2 it's gonna be corrupted like we have been.
-
3 RepliesSupers have held this franchise back for several years. To remain relevant supers have to be removed from the game completely.
-
1 ReplyI think bungie should just delete everything and get it over and done with. Put the game in the bin.

3 RepliesThat’s the authors spin on things. Show me where Smith states, categorically, that supers will be leaving the game. Show me that exact phrase. “ I am getting rid of the supers in the game”. The example of nova warp is bad because the author of the article says it makes sense as very few people use it. Those are not Luke Smiths words.
-
2 RepliesIt’s years away. Surely by then, 1 of the “destiny killers” will actually kill destiny
-
1 ReplyI mean there are technically ways to do this while “removing” in a sense the supers. I’m fine with them “ridding” some supers to allows us to mix and match abilities. I miss D1 Gunslinger running increased reload AND stability on precision kills instead of just one or the other. The only way, only right way, would be to add the supers they “delete” back in aspects. That way we can keep the supers, since a lot of them are still useful and preferred, while getting the customization without breaking the skill trees. Any removal of supers will be horribly received and SHOULD NOT happen.

5 RepliesDestiny Community: "We want more customizability for subclass trees like we had in Destiny 1." Luke Smith: "We are considering updating the subclasses to be more customizable like we had in Destiny 1." Destiny Community: "DON'T SUNSET OUT SUPERS!!!" Don't get me wrong, I don't like the idea of removing supers, I just find it interesting that there is always something to complain about. Since the start of Destiny 2, the community has complained about the lack of customizability of Supers and ability builds. Take a few steps back and look at where Destiny 2 is today. Take Sentinel Titan for example. There are 3 very distinct skill trees that have very different functionality within the game. When paired with Exotics, mods, and weapon loadouts, there is significantly more variability in Destiny 2 compared to Destiny 1, yet, all we heard from the community for 3 years is that they wanted a system similar to Destiny 1 where we didn't have supers like Nova Warp, Chaos Reach, Well of Radiance, Sentinel, Thundercrash, Burning Maul, Spectral Blades, and Blade Barrage. We are still a ways away from tuning the Light subclasses and there is still much improvement to be made on Stasis. What I would like to see in the future would be a system similar to Stasis that has Aspects that change the super fundamentally, such as an Aspect that changes Nova Bomb into Nova Warp. Most abilities within the subclass tree could be Fragments to allow for customizability. Imagine having Celestial Fire on a Wellock or Detonation Charged abilities on a Ward of Dawn Titan. That would be amazing.
-
Guess we should have been told. Play it “Luke’s” way. He must have confused “Luke” with “your”.
-
Going to sunset the least used supers then reissue them thru a pay wall. Stasis is currently behind a pay wall. No one talks about that. So to them its all fine.
-
Nova bombs are not part of a warlocks identity?!? Yep im jumping ship
-
3 RepliesDatto: Raids are too hard Bungie: Got it...removing supers.
-
I think this is a very very bad idea super should not be sunsetted. If they do this they'll ruin the game, nova wrap didn't fit with the warlock? Your problem! I'm hunter main but I know of people (not a few to be clear) that likes nova wrap very much and this would be a huge insults towards them. Please use you head before you advances such proposals bungie.
-
I guess a world where you can keep your loot (and supers) just doesn’t fit Luke’s “fantasy land”.
-
I completely agree, if they were to change the light subclasses to be the stasis layout, they need to keep the older supers. The idea that because something isn't "IP" defining sounds like trying to rationalize and normalize the behavior of trimming so much fat that there's no more meat.
-
11 RepliesNowhere in tbe article says they are sunsetting supers. Its just noted as a possibility.

8 RepliesEdited by LiquidAmnesia: 12/17/2020 7:17:29 PMYou're over reading and over thinking. They're trying to align the light sub class systems with the incoming darkness sub classes and stasis. This is reasonable considering how much everyone complains about stasis. I also didn't see anything about sunsetting but as usual the community reads one thing and decided to jump from the edge of space.
