I started thinking about this seeing as though we now know The Stranger is from a different timeline. From Destiny, we are left off in the Iron Lords story. Now the story could have continued from there, but we were left off at another point which is the attack of the city.
Maybe we were suppose to die in the "Red War" for good. Maybe not. But the Stranger saw the main character corrupted by Stasis in her timeline. Why else have we not her in the past several years after destroying the Black Guarden?
I also have another piece of evidence. In the season of Dawn. We witnessed a glimpse of the future that the main character would die. Or was that a message from a different timeline.
If we didn't save Saint from the Marter Mind (sorry if spelled wrong) then we could have died for good there. Only more lore of the game will tell us the secrets.

Destiny 1 and 2 are the same timeline. That’s confirmed repeatedly. The Stranger has been through many timelines, and we don’t know what will happen with our grave because the Sundial was nuts and we changed our timeline by using it, plus the Vex Network expands into all timelines so it would be understandable if that grave wasn’t even from our timeline.

1 ReplySpeaking in canon terms destiny 1 and 2 take place in the same timeline but my theory is at the end of shadowkeep the pyramid ship teleported us to the strangers timeline where we saw the version of ourselves corrupted by stasis and we were teleported back
