Sexuality in Destiny.

Hey Bungie, it’s cool that we have some representation in this game. But I would ask that you please consider your audience. An overbearing amount of Destiny players are quite young, they don’t possess the maturity to be dealing with topics like sexuality. Your inclusion of other sexualities is great, but the resulting fall out from the community has made it not at all worth it. Your efforts to be more inclusive have resulted in the spreading of hate. There are hundreds of comments on these forums gay bashing and spreading hate about the LGBT. Your efforts at inclusivity have backfired dramatically and caused a larger divide between players than I have seen in a long time. You’ve essentially painted a target on the backs of all LGBT people within your community. Most of us live with that sort of hatred in our every day lives and use video games as an escape. In my opinion, the most optimal way to handle sexuality is with subtle hints, not outright statements. It allows the hateful to ignore those hints, and those seeking representation to find it in the fine text. But please, I ask that you no longer flaunt this in front of your playerbase, because the resulting fallout is not at all worth it. Seeing people rip into gay culture, spread hatred and misinformation about the LGBT, and write this all off as political correctness forced “by the left,” is just tiring. We live with this crap day in and day out, please don’t drag those real world problems into your game. It’s not that I’m asking you to let hate win, I’m just asking that you don’t paint targets on our backs. Please.

  • My take on it is this: I straight-up (no pun intended) don't care what you are, who you are, or what you like. It doesn't matter to me; But what I hate is when people try to MAKE me care about something that I don't want to care about. Forcing views, agendas, or just trying to shove this kind of stuff down my throat is nothing other than annoying. I dont have anything against gay people or LGBT. I dont have anything against any kind of person, because that is what everybody is to me: a person. I've worked with a lesbian couple before and they were freaking awesome. They weren't forcing anything, they were just being themselves. And because of that, none of us really paid any mind to them being lesbian because it didn't friggin matter! They were our friends and coworkers, why were we supposed to give a crap about their sexuality? The answer: we weren't.

    • The vast majority of the comments I’ve read concerning this topic have been focused primarily on how this story shift doesn’t really flow from the previous story episodes involving these two characters. I think that’s also why you didn’t see this kind of sustained tension with the myriad of other gay characters in Destiny. I also think it’s a really sad situation that people who don’t like this story shift are automatically branded as homophobic or hateful when their concerns about narrative and character consistency have merit. Too much of culture/society/etc. currently seems to be about some sort of social retribution/revenge.

Can we just, not, include things that are blatant pandering to the SJWs who flip their shit over the slightest thing? K? K. Edit: As Fae said, the irony here is rich. Thank you for being exactly what I described, even if it's not quite as explosive as implied.

          • It’s a set up for a future season “season of the immune compromised”. Once all combatants in the destiny universe have been defeated, guardians will have to work together to discover a cure for AIDS, the epidemic affecting sooooo many guardians like Saint and Osiris. Guardians will be required to prance along far and wide in an effort to save humanity. Dr. Fauci will be the new traveler and every guardian will be required to wear a mask over their butt.

It would have a better chance if there wasn't such a terrible reputation for clumsy storytelling. If this is something some of the audience has trouble with, either quit or get used to it.

          • I just really don't care who's gay and who's not. I agree I think it's real weird it's being forced into the story and I'm just like "okay thanks that really helps my immersion". It doesn't, it makes zero difference. The narrative directors should spend their time filling in gaps of the game's story, not go JK Rowling on us

I’m going to be honest with you. I think it does more good than harm. First, it allows those that are open-minded and/or impressionable about LGBTQIA+ to learn more about those within that community while educating them on their own identities as they grow up and grow as people. Second, the ones that negatively and hatefully object to the mere mention of gay characters in a video game out themselves to be the pieces of shit they are. It’s pretty simple. I see this as a win-win from my POV. Now, I can get what you’re trying to say but you don’t tolerate the intolerant. You don’t give those that wish to send those that are gay forcibly to be straight through shock therapy and other cruel means the idea that they are welcome in society. You treat them for what they are. If they are homophobic ass, you tell them they are not welcome and they can take any of their friends that have similar beliefs with them. They are not welcome either. If someone practices homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, racism, misandry, and other forms of discrimination (including hatred against Muslims, Jews, and other religions/nationalities/cultures). They deserve to be thrown out and treated like the outcasts that they are.

                  • Hi, bisexual transgender man here. I feel like representation from huge companies is for marketing, obviously with like Walmart or Target supporting pride. It’s a PR stunt. However, it’s a good sign of changing of the times. I’m from the Deep South, and trust me when I say there’s a lot of... controversy regarding the LGBTQ+ community. I feel like the gaming industry is still struggling to adapt. If you search through sites like Tumblr, or even Twitter, you’ll find people love being represented in their favorite media. It’s only painting a target on your back if you let it. These people who are painting “targets” is more likely the people who doesn’t want to see specific diversity in their gaming world. But, that’s just it. Gay people have been a part of history, even if hasn’t been recorded. More or less, it has been viewed as an abnormal thing to be for... a while. It’s about time that it’s seen as normal. Not sexual either. It’s helping the younger audience find themselves and know that it’s okay to be yourself and that the world isn’t out to get you.

Don’t have an issue with content, which is up to the creators to do with what they want. Issue Is with the maturity(and lack of) of a vocal minority on the forums(I hate harping on how this is a subset of the community, not the community itself same as Reddit, Discord, or any Content creators fan base). Why buckle simply because assholes be assholes? If people are being hateful, ban them. It’s not up to Bungie to be your father and protect you from the ills of the world. That should have been taught to a lot of you years ago.

Even if it was, teenagers know that people are gay. Not making the content they want for their game because I microscopic % of the audience for the game can’t help but be horrible to others doesn’t make any sense. Asking them to not allow their artists to express themselves out of fear of hate speech from internet trolls is absolutely asking them to let hate win.

                            • The thing about inclusion and representation is if you never make an effort to do it, you’ll often find it never happens. If we always waited for when people were “ready” it could never happen. For it to be normal we have to get to a point where we react to a character being gay the same way we react to one being straight. With general indifference. The same way nobody loses their **** over seeing a commercial with a mixed race couple/family eating at Olive Garden, saying it’s political. No people lose their **** because Olive Garden is trash. :P I doubt there are many if any people that live in a situation where they feel ashamed or scared to be straight. But there are some, LGBTQ kids and teens that do. If a video game over-representing LGBTQ makes them feel a little better, a little normal, less judged, for even a minute, then I cannot say it is a bad thing.
