Bungie says there wasn’t enough player engagement to justify the development cost to bring it back .
But I’m willing to bet Trials and Raids have lower engagement than SRL did,and they spend a ton of development cost on them
I’m not saying there shouldn’t be raids and trials,I am saying if they can exist for players that enjoy them , why can’t SRL fans have a mode they enjoy also ?

SRL was my favorite event by far (and tbh outshines literally every event in d2), but it didnt have the engagement or population. Raids have a lower player population but MASSIVE player engagement from the hardcore audience that does play them. Trials, well, the hope was the same case as raids, but the engagement has been dwindling. The issue with SRL was that because it was an event, much like haunted forest and stuff, the race tracks got pretty repetitive and had people drop off like flies. They would need to have preferably all the d1 tracks and then some more in d2 for it to have longevity.
