Go to the Saltmines in the EDZ. There is a teleporter at the end. Go through the teleporter and walk straight up the hill. At the end is a small tunnel, if you jump up and walk through this tunnel you will reach a campside. If you go to the burned campfire you will receive a prompt to inspect it. There you go :).

Do I have to do anything Gambit related beforehand?

No, you don’t have to do anything for thorn in gambit to start the quest. But you should complete the quest as fast as possible because the last step is the savathun strike on titan and this planet will be vaulted in beyond light. Quest steps -Start the quest by finding it near the campside on the EDZ. -Visit Banshee 44 -Complete destination bounty’s on IO, kill warlocks in pvp or complete a couple Nightfallstrikes -Complete destination bounty’s on titan, kill titans in pvp or complete Blind well encounters -Complete destination bounty’s on mars, kill hunters in pvp or complete some Escalation Protocol encounters. -Defeat Guardians in pvp with void weapons or hand cannons. -Visit Tyra Karn at the farm -Complete the Savathun Strike on titan (at the end before the final boss damagephase, you have to kill two knights. They are pretty big, you can’t miss them but be warned, dont kill the Strikeboss before you haven’t killed those two knights or you have to complete the Nightfall all over again. Good Hunting <3

Yes, thorn was introduced in the season of the drifter, which means its from the Forsaken DLC.

Shoot, I don't have Forsaken. Oh well! Crimson is enough for now.
