Get ready to take the red pill...
My theory is that Bungie always intended to release Destiny 3 and not keep Destiny 2 going forever. However the split with activision, the realization that they simply can’t produce enough content, and COVID made it so they didn’t have enough game and couldn’t release it as is. So they conspired...
Instead of delaying it or telling people, they chopped the insufficient amount of content they did have in progress into 3 DLCs. Beyond Light, being the most finalized, will be released first (and it’s even been delayed) while the others are still being worked on. So one games worth of content will essentially be split into 3 DLCs spaced out over 3 years to give Bungie time.
This is why they announced 3 years worth of content, which they have never done before. But there’s more, all of these DLCs will now be sold for $39.99 each, plus extra for seasonal content and Deluxe editions, and will make much more than the one $59.99 new game release ever would have.
But they couldn’t make enough loot or content to keep people excited for these with their current staff, and didn’t know how to keep up on sandbox issues and prevent themselves from having to maintain a giant game now that they wouldn’t be selling a new game. So what did they do?
Simple, the destiny vault, recycling D1 content, and sunsetting. “We don’t want to make you start over and lose your loot again” they said, but in actuality that was exactly what they wanted and now they had to build a system to do just that.
Getting rid of the zones that wouldn’t have been included with the new game, limiting viable weapons and armor through sunsetting, and reskinning and rereleasing sunset weapons (see this weeks TWAB), ensures that maintaining the world will be easier and people will have to hunt the new (mostly reskinned) loot, thus reducing the work load. It’s almost the same as if they had the tower blow up again, except you still get to look at the gear you won’t use anymore.
And the last step to make the plan work? Make it seem like it’s what they wanted to do the whole time. Hype up the DLCs, announce it like you have this huge plan for 3 years of destiny, and tell people they’ll never lose their loot again. Then you slowly roll out the vault, sunsetting, and D1 content while everyone talks about how cool stasis looks.
And the sheep of the destiny community ate it up with a spoon. Preorder money is already rolling into Bungie’s account as I type this and the cogs are in motion. Luke Smith duped you all! While all of you were knocking him in the forums and calling him dumb, he was lighting a cigar and eating caviar on your dime, laughing at you.

If we go by the original contract D3 was supposed to come out 2018.

Sounds pretty accurate. But I'm not falling for it. I have been free to play all year after buying every piece of content since day one D1. No season passes, no more dlc. Nothing. I just play with my friends when they are on for something to do with them. The game is just background noise at this point. 🤷🏻♂️
