Why Comp Sucks: A Perspective from a Pseudo-Casual Player

I'm trying to hit Legend. Why? One main reason: Playing comp has allowed me to learn to control my frustration towards Crucible. Because when I'm not angry at Crucible, I enjoy the chaos no matter how broken a certain meta weapon/arch type is (Mountaintop/Gnawing Hunger. Another conversation entirely). My secondary reasoning: I'm on the last step to Not Forgotten. Might as well try and get it anyways since I don't have it. Plus there's now the FOMO because Bungie is vaulting the pinnacle quest lines and I am so so very close to Not Forgotten. It sucks to have a fear of missing out. But this is just the side quest to my main quest. So hitting Legend is my goal and Comp is my road to my goal. I don't think it's the players I'm getting matched against, despite there being wallhackers, aimbotters, and pure unadulterated sweat lords. No, it's definately not that. It's the way the comp system works. Today I lost and won a total of games for both W/L meaning I played 12 games today. The only reason I sit in my current Glory standing is due to the streak bonuses you get for winning multiple games in a row. (I may have evened out both my wins and loses with the bonus points, but that's unfortunate players have to do that). And there-in-lies the problem: If you're not winning multiple games in a row you're losing Glory points, and that really sucks. Comp is already mentally taxing with how toxic some players can be, on top of the meta spam of "I'm Losing: The Gun" (Mountaintop) and "Call of Duty" (Gnawing Hunter). Let's say I played 10 games for keeping things easy to understand. I won 5, and lost 5. If I didn't have any bonuses, I would have been losing Glory points, about 2-5% more than games I have won. It's not rewarding, and seems excessively punishing for those really really struggling to play. I've been stuck in the High Fabled III - Mid Mythic I rankings for the last 4 almost 5 weeks. I've seen my gameplay improve with my stats, but the way comp works it's point values I'm losing points for winning the same exact amount of games I lost. I'm not asking for an absolute removal of that mechanic, because high comp IS high comp and should be respected as such. But it doesn't have to be so taxing and leaving players mentally exhausted. If I win 5 games and lose 5 games, I should have been able to make a little progress. Just a little bit. Not too much. But just enough so plays can look at how well they played say "It didn't go too bad today" (whatever they usually say keep them in positive spirits and want to come back for more). This isn't a fix to all the player toxicity and self-inflicted negativity. But I think it'd help brighten the spirits of the players involved. 'Cause as it stands (idk if others are afflicted by the same problem due to them being a better or worse player than I am) I'm not gaining anything by playing. TL;DR: Comp's point system (in high comp) needs a slight adjustment so that if a player (for example) wins 5 games and loses 5 games (alternating) there is at least some progress towards hitting their targeted goal (Legend). I think it'd help boost players want to play the mode, and keep player moral higher than normal.

  • I honestly don’t remember losing points when winning and losing the same amount of games. For me it if I won a game then lose it would just take them points back off. I think there is some sort of skill rating behind the scenes in comp. it was meant to boost higher skilled players up the ranks quickly, so that it wouldn’t be a sweat feast for everyone at the start of the season. You might be on the receiving end of that. Meaning you’re higher ranked than the game thinks you should be. If that is the case that system needs to be scrapped as it’s clearly a unfair system for people who quickly improved their skill level. Don’t take this as gospel as I don’t know that it definitely works like that. Moving on to your suggestion I think they need to be careful adding too many plus points for winning. If you have too many it just becomes a timed played rank like Valour instead of skill rank. But bonus for streaks and same points for winning and losing seems fairest. Or scrap the streaks and just have slightly higher points for winning.
