Special ammo needs to feel as the name implies, special. Being able to use a special weapon to self sustain your own ammo does not make sense to me. This forgoes the need for primaries and frankly makes special weapons just another point and shoot tool.
This is one reason why I am an advocate for crates, however I have seen some good ideas about other ways to get ammo, such as kill streaks with primaries.

I don't like crates because it "forces" the use of a primary rather than "provides incentive" for the use of a primary. It slows the game down and makes variety straight up plummet. It makes the majority of engagements feel like the last, and then eliminates the outplayability some specials bring to the table. That's why I like the option of primaries dropping more special. Want ammo? Earn it. And if special kills only drop one shot, your special streak is over the moment you miss once.
