Is Savathun actually evil?

I don't really know lore so I'm asking. Yes Hive are bad, so are taken, but Savathun takes us out of the beam of the darkness. Savathun doesn't use the sword logic to my knowledge but the darkness does and by technicality guardians do as well. We make Savathun stronger by being stronger ourselves. I feel like Savathun may not be the enemy in this instance, or rather the bigger threat. I feel like Savathun is a Loki to norse mythology, where they are definitely in it only for themselves but not inherently evil. Thoughts? Lore to back or go against what I am thinking? I'd like to know cause I lost track of the new lore. Also on an unrelated question, is Oryx still alive? Did Eris hint at him still being alive?

  • People who think Oryx is still alive are almost as bad as the Cayde-7 people.

    • None of the Osmiums were evil. The 3 heirs made a pact with the worms because they were of old age and lived for only 10 years, in order to retake their homeland and get revenge against Taox. Anyone in their situation would do this. There quest for revenge eventually turned into one based on influence from their worms, to seek out the strongest life and test if it was mighty. Oryx himself or a small part of him still questioned his actions and I believe that because the 3 heirs have been doing this for thousands of year, it’s just who and what they are now.

    • She’s still against us, however she appears to be trying to separate herself from the sword logic and the Darkness as well

    • There is no such thing as “good” or “evil”. Anything you find that goes against who you are and what you stand for is “evil” or “bad”, but in reality, that thing is probably just fighting for their own side and sees YOU as “evil”. So it just becomes a moot point. Invalid. What you perceive as “evil” is someone else’s “hero”. Is Winter “evil” just because it forces Summer to leave? To change? No, right? It just is how it is. That is its nature, pun intended.

      • When The Nine speak of the 'beings who surpassed their design', I believe they were speaking of Savathun (abandoning the Sword Logic) Drifter (Utilizing the darkness) and Eris (Surviving without the light, and communing with Hive magic). We know two are 'female' and Drifter is the 3rd. I think Savathun knows the true threat of The darkness, and must work together with Drifter and Eris to stop it's progression. And I think the Darkness is actually The Nine, and not the Pyramid Ships, and the 'threat of the Darkness' is the Nine coming into our reality, and becoming the Agent of Entropy that the Winnower/Darkness is supposed to be.

      • I have looked into some of the lore, but there is still a chance I could be wrong about this. It seems that the pyramids want to lend us as their strength so we can be their instruments, instead of the Traveler’s. Currently, the hive are the envoys of the pyramids, and it seems like Savathun wants to keep it that way. Just like a possessive girlfriend, Savathun wants to minimize the interactions between the pyramids and the guardians. Basically, she doesn’t want the pyramids to cheat on her. As for Oryx, we killed him in Destiny 1, in the King’s Fall raid. Although Oryx may still return, purely in the sense that he gets unvaulted. KF was one of the most popular raids in Destiny’s history. So I think it’s pretty safe to say that it’ll almost certainly be unvaulted in Year 5 or later.

          • There is no such thing as pure good or pure evil, least of all in people. In the best of us there are thoughts or deeds that are wicked, and in the worst of us, at least some virtue. An adversary is not one who does loathsome acts for their own sake. He always has a reason that to him is justification. My cat eats mice. Does that make him bad? I don't think so, and the cat doesn't think so, but I would bet the mice have a different opinion. Terry Goodkind
I am too stupid to come up with own ideas
• You could argue Guradians are evil. Are the Hive evil? Is a virus? A killer bacteria? Everyone is just trying to survive in their own way.

            • Darkness is darkness I don't like the commentary that bungie is driving with "Dark can be wielded for good". In reality that is bull**** ends justify the means. Darkness is evil, savathun is dark and evil, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. on that note the Drifter is evil and should have been executed for showing his face in the tower.

As far as humanity is concerned, yes, she is evil. What's different is her goals and methods of reaching her goals. Oryx was technically still alive through the Touch of Malice back in D1, but since the Cabal blew up our vaults and the blueprints are likely lost, he is likely perma dead unless the Hive have truly found a way to bring him back.

              • You’re looking at it all wrong. Also, you are, like a lot of people do, making the mistake of evaluating “evil” as an concept. It isn’t. It’s a term whose meaning is dependent of the point of view of the observer. Evil is defined as “profoundly immoral”, but morality is a subjective term and it’s substance is defined by the individual. Say, for example, an alien species, far more technologically and biologically evolved than us, arrived on earth. On the cusp of extinction and they’re only hope of survival as a species was terraforming earth which would eliminate us. To us, they’re an evil race hellbent on wiping us out. To them, they’re doing the most honorable thing they can do; saving their friends and families from death. See where I’m getting at? I’m not saying that’s what savathun is doing, merely that “evil” is a very subjective term. Oryx could also be considered to be a physical manifestation of the theory of evolution. Sword logic was essentially a Shakespearean rendition m of the concept of “survival of the fittest”. There was nothing that could be objectively defined as “evil” there. Impossible to say more though until we actually find out what Savathuns motivation for coming to us actually is. But as it stands, we have no more reason to be opposed to savathun/pyramid ships than we do to the traveller. We already know from the existence of the Fallen that the travellers main interest is self preservation, not our preservation. So it stands to reason that he is merely using sol system/ humanity as shelter or some other unknown purpose. Using race or their home for safety then abandoning it to its doom when threatened, as the traveller has already done elsewhere, would be easily described as “evil” by humanity’s concept of right or wrong wouldn’t it?

              • As Senator Palpatine once said: "good is a point of view". Same can be said about evil.

              • Savathûn previously followed the Sword Logic and still is forced to so that her Worm doesn’t consume her. But now she knows the Worm Gods and Pyramids are liars and false idols. Her current goal is to free herself from the Worm Pact and escape her inevitable death. So she’s doing what she can to ruin the Pyramids’ plans and find away to prevent her death. Oryx technically can never be truly killed as far as we know, as well as Savathûn and Xivu Arath. Even if they are killed in the Ascendant Realm they can be revived through specific means, like how Oryx revived Savathûn and Xivu Arath through acts of deception and war. It is possible that Oryx could be revived.

                    • Depends what you mean. No-one is purely evil or good. That's a very binary way of thinking. People just do evil and good things.

                    • Savathûn is attempting to obtain knowledge and power so insurmountable that she becomes an immutable presence in the universe, can’t imagine the Darkness or the Light would be overly thrilled with her trying to sidestep “their” little game. That being said Savathûn sounds “evil” compared to the Darkness.
