The Gnawing Hunger meta is a result of sunsetting
According to the data The Gnawing Hunger auto rifle accounts for 25 percent of all pvp weapon kills.
This is a result of sunsetting. Its the only 600 rpm auto rifle available to get. Only some people with a Forward Path have a better role.
Its the only auto that can roll with kill clip. Its a very common drop from umbral engrams which can be easily accessed. The main selling point is that its not going to be sunset.
Let's look at other 600s.
Gillard- Extremely rare drop SUNSET
Misfit- Poor perk pool and also being SUNSET
Forward Path- Good perk pool. Only available when iron banner is around
Summoner- Trials Weapon. Good perk pool but will be sunset sooner then GH.
Gwaning Hunger- Good Perk pool. Easily acquired and not being Sunset.
This is why people use that gun. Its the perfect storm. So no wonder people use it.

1 ReplyWrong. There are plenty of the top used guns that will be sunset next season. Gnawing Hunger is easily farmable and one of the best in class 600 autos - the current overall meta archetype and weapon type. Suros is great and widely used and not susceptible to sunsetting, same for Thorn. Balance discussions aside. If more weapons were easily farmable like Gnawing Hunger is, you would see their usage increase but in this current meta, 600s will always be at the top.

Misfit is a 720rpm Rapid Fire frame. Ether Doctor is a 600rpm adaptive. They look really similar so i'll give you that but it's still being retired come season's end. :)

It's not a result of sunsetting. It's the result of scout rifles and slow-firing primaries never getting the buffs they deserve.

Gnawing Hunger is a result of people always wanting to run whatever the easiest to kill with meta is. Just so happens 600 autos are up to bat this season and GH is at the top of the list for legendary's. People cant be bothered to play with anything that requires any skill to use and Bungie is always happy to oblige with some over the top weapon that has the vast majority sucking at the tit.

Naw it gets overused not because of sunsetting but because autos were buffed to be top strong. They need to give other weapons the same treatment. People will always take the easier path.. and autos are about as easy as it gets

Gnawing Hunger used to take some effort to obtain from The Reckoning. As a result not so many people had it. Now Umbral engrams almost rain 🌧 down constantly, and multiple tries at a good roll Gnawing Hunger can be obtained with minimal effort. -
It's -blam!-ing annoying is what it is...there's like no balance in PVP this season
