Returning Player feeling lost/overwhelmed!

I recently came back to the game after last playing in the Warmind expansion, and man has a lot of stuff changed!! I feel like I have absolutely no idea what to do, what's going on, or where to start now. Can anyone walk me through the TL:DR version of the changes, and what I should focus on first to get back up-to-speed? Right now I'm just farming events to try and get my light level up, and then I'm planning to run story content from the last 2 expansions. A few specific questions I had: -Are the season pass things required to be competitive, or can I just purchase the expansions? If they are, do I need to buy the previous season passes as well? -What happened to the weekly quests for things like crucible/quests for the powerful gear emblem? Have they been removed? -I keep running into these "invulnerable" bosses in world that just destroy me and can't seem to be damaged - what's the deal with those? -What's this new element stuff on armors? -I had a lot of really good 750-light weapons. Should I save those for upgrades for when my light is higher?

Ehy Sephollos =) well, your feelings are comprensible since you have basically two Years of contents and changes to deal with! If you have intention to go back playing D2 regulary, the best thing to do is actually leave all the old contents behind and focusing on the new Stuff, so those of this Seasons (Season of the Arrivals). If you prefer to recover all the old Stuff, you can do it, also because this Season will last until November, so you have all the time. You can complete the Forsaken Campaign and try to catch up with all the things of last Seasons that are still available. Anyway, probably you might need more then one single big thread here and asking many different things in many different threads. To answer to your questions:
-Are the season pass things required to be competitive, or can I just purchase the expansions? If they are, do I need to buy the previous season passes as well?
Season Passes are not necessary to be competitive neither in PvP, nor in PvE. You can just buy the Expasions.
-What happened to the weekly quests for things like crucible/quests for the powerful gear emblem? Have they been removed?
Weekly Quests are still a thing, but they are no more Quests, they are just Bounties you can get from NPC like Shaxx, Zavala ecc.
-I keep running into these "invulnerable" bosses in world that just destroy me and can't seem to be damaged - what's the deal with those?
There are actually many invulnerable Bosses around the Worlds. Some of them have mechanics, other are Champions and you need to have higher Power to deal with them plus some Mods for Weapons in order to deal with their powers (Barriers for example).
-What's this new element stuff on armors?
These are Armors 2.0. The entire Armors system is been updated. Probably you need to find a YT guide about it because it's really long to explain.
-I had a lot of really good 750-light weapons. Should I save those for upgrades for when my light is higher?
Yes and no. There are many new Weapons that you would probably try and many old Weapons that were really good at the time, now are kinda meh. Also, from November, Weapons and Armors from Season 1 to Season 8 (D2 Vanilla to Shadowkeep Season 1) are going to be Sunsetted, which means that you won't be able to Upgrade anymore over the actual Cap (1060). As I wrote to you, there are a lot of things to say... it's almost impossible to update you about all of them in just one thread. P.S: My apologize, I forgot to welcome you back on D2! =)
-Are the season pass things required to be competitive, or can I just purchase the expansions?
You should at least get the S11 pass in order to access the seasonal activity and start grabbing potent weapons like Gnawing Hunger and Falling Guillotine. Shadowkeep is required to access the Garden of Salvation raid, certain exotic quests and pinnacle engram sources, which are needed to push your light level up when you hit the soft cap at LL 1050.
-I keep running into these "invulnerable" bosses in world that just destroy me and can't seem to be damaged - what's the deal with those?
You are likely running into new Taken bosses that require specific mechanics to become vulnerable, generally by popping a blight, leading two shielded swordbearers together, or killing wizards that heal the boss. If your light level is too low, some high level enemies will just be immune by default.
-What's this new element stuff on armors?
Armor 2.0 is a new system where armor comes with "elemental affinity". Certain mods will also have affinities and can only be attached to armor of the same element. The main difference between the affinities is that their respective mods support different weapons and playstyles. Do some research on what affinities support which mods, decide on the gear/playstyle that best suits you and go from there. You can also spend masterwork materials to switch an armor's elemental affinity. Don't worry about masterworking until you've found armor that has the ideal stat distribution you want.
-I had a lot of really good 750-light weapons. Should I save those for upgrades for when my light is higher?
Depends. Thanks to Sunsetting, any weapons and armor from Season 8 and before have their light level capped at 1060, making them useless for endgame content in Season 12. Season 9 gear will sunset in season 13. Season 10 gear will sunset in season 14, etc. The best course of action is to aim for good gear from the current season so it has the longest potential shelf life. Gear from Garden of Salvation and Last Wish has also been updated to the latest LL caps, making them a viable option to grind.

      • I'd get shadow keep and the current season of the season pass if you are serious about getting back into it Until you're level 1000 the weekly activities won't grant you gear however everything you do will give you higher blues. All weapons you had in warmind are reaquireable from the collections but may not have the same elements so feel free to delete them because forsaken introduced special weapons back into the game as well as random rolls. Upgrade modules are used in infusion so I personally wouldn't use them on any of your gear until your close to 1050 Having shadow keep will help boost your level quickly through once you hit level 1000 however you can get higher gear for doing your weeklies As for what to do just work on quests with friends Good luck guardian

I would hold off on purchasing any expansions or season passes until the big expansion November 10th. If you've been gone for a while there is plenty of stuff to play without paying. You will get plenty of good weapons, armor, and exotics without season passes. Personally, I've skipped the season passes for the past 2 years and only bought the big fall expansions. The seasons are almost always just some boring mode that you are forced to grind over and over for mediocre loot that will be sunset this fall anyway.
-Are the season pass things required to be competitive, or can I just purchase the expansions? If they are, do I need to buy the previous season passes as well?
You can't buy previous season passes. A thing about season pass and expansions. If you buy Shadowkeep, the season pass for the current season is automatically yours, you don't need to buy it. (at least that's what the description in the steam store says, don't know about psn, xbox, etc.) About expansions, if you can, wait for a promotion, for example, right now, on steam, the upgrade edition (Forsaken + Shadowkeep) costs 41,99€, I waited for a promotion, and bought it at 28,13€. As I saw in a reply, you do have lots of free content to play, experiment a bit, and then decide.
-I had a lot of really good 750-light weapons. Should I save those for upgrades for when my light is higher?
I'd actually save one piece of each of 750 you got and don't upgrade it. One for the 1st weapon slot, one for the 2nd weapon slot and one for the 3rd. Also, keep one 750 for each armor slot. This is for what, if certain bugs happen again, you can "downpower" yourself to 750, and take advantage of the bug while it's not being fixed. I know know, probaly not a popular opinion, but everyone did it, I didn't take full advantage because I was to busy playing the game instead of coming to the foruns or reddit, so I only took advantage in the final 2 days of the bug, and it was really helpfull.

        • The game in general is overly bloated and convoluted atm. So many things to do, some worth it, some not, etc. Id wait until next expansion, seems bungie are trying to (i hope) fix this issue, sometimes less is better.

        • That's part of the problem with this game. It's too unfriendly to newer/returning players. There's just not enough in-game HELP to guide you. Let me re-phrase, there is NO IN-GAME HELP. Bungie expects you to go to Youtube streamers to figure it out.

Play through Forsaken, it was the last time content was actually good. Then (if you can), get Shadowkeep and the latest expansion and just skip everything in between and focus on Arrivals, leveling up and getting Umbral engrams. This season has been surprisingly worthwhile, and the gear you can get from the engrams is a nice taste of everything between Forsaken and Arrivals.
To put things in a little more context, and to give you a taste of what you missed (in my opinion): Forsaken was excellent, you should play it. Season of the Forge was a grind fest but the weapons were pretty cool and it has a mercifully short raid with a really good exotic that you can now farm. Season of the drifter was a complete waste of time unless you like gambit, which I do not. Season of Opulence introduced the Menagerie which was one of the more unique activities Bungie had come up with in a long time. Ultimately it was disappointing because they never refreshed the loot pool. 2019 Solstice of Heroes was SUCH a waste of time. You’re lucky you missed it. Seriously. Shadowkeep was OK but very short and Hive themed, which I am never a fan of. A pyramid ship shows up, you get to go inside it and fight enemies you’ve already fought before. Season of the Undying was repetitive and boring, but I heard the raid was pretty good. Season of the Dawn was repetitive and boring. Season of the Worthy was repetitive and boring. Rasputin blew up the Almighty which took two hours (an hour and a half of which was just waiting). Season of Arrivals addresses the pyramid ships even more which is nice and brings back a lot of old loot that you can get in the Umbral engrams. This is also the season to be grinding for loot since it is the only gear that is going to be relevant in the coming year due to sunsetting.
• My honest answer would be go after quest exotics and get those out of the way, it gives you something to chase and potentially be a new favorite for yourself. The season pass is optional but imo for 10$ it’s pretty worth it. Lots of items to help you out and you get access to the rest of the seasons content. Up to you really.

          • I came back about three months ago after only playing year 1. I feel like I am only just getting back into the swing of things now and I don’t raid or do trials. There is so much to do with quests etc that you are going to have to really grind to catch up. I would recommend finding a helpful clan cos catching up solo will be hard work.

          • For the "invulnerable" you need artefact mods for anti-barrier, overload and stagger.

          • Pretty much all armour will be trash by the time the new content drops. Sure your arrivals armour and raid armour will carry on being able to level up but I very much doubt it will be able to slot the new "annual" mods or some bullshit like that. So dont fret over masterworking your armour. Dont bother with any lengthy grinds like broadsword . Unless you fancy a long grind solely to use it in low level activities. All forsaken/shadowkeep era gear is trash since it expires so soon. Pretty much if it isnt arrivals gear shard it or infuse. The arrivals engrams are good. High stat gear and good rolls on weapons and all easy to come by. Get an gnawing hunger and a gillotine. Experiment with the arrivals mods, they are one of the best parts of the season. Be sure to do the prophecy dungeon .
