The CBMM Iron Banner experiment = Poor results.

I know Bungie. I know. You probably saw the raw numbers from last season. You probably knew this was going to be a pretty dry season for content and numbers might not improve. I know you also listened to the streamers, youtubers, and hardcore players advocating for CBMM again and again over the last few seasons. But it is clear at this point... It's not working with the overall player base. I've found this season to be confusing and frustrating in the Crucible. With SBMM last season my K/A.D was around fricking 1.8, while playing people at my own level. I always knew what to expect and that as long as I brought my "A game" I would have a fair fight and do well. Win or lose. I liked it. If I ever got tired I took breaks. But then I'd come back and it would be as I remembered it. And I would do fine. But now this season has come around and my seasonal K/A.D has dropped to around 1.5... Why? Because the Crucible is out of control with Flawless hardcore Trials players stomping casual terrible players and I'm caught in the middle. And since I play solo a lot; or with friends that fall into that casual tier, we almost always get stuck with those Trials players on the other team. It happened a LOT in this past Iron Banner. Those ridiculous players even kill me more often than not and it is just frustrating watching blueberries on my team get destroyed without even seemingly knowing what is happening to them. And I can't help them most of the time and they definitely never help me. lol. This is not how it should be Bungie. Letting hardcore Trial players and teams "farm" the casual player in Control, Iron Banner, and whatever other playlist is not good for the player base or for business. The casual players clearly don't want to get stomped by these guys all the time and I agree they shouldn't be forced into these situations. Casual players are not going to become hardcore players and stick around longer because they get stomped. Most will just quit the game, or at least quit the Crucible. There are too many different options that they will turn too if they decide the Crucible; or even just Destiny 2, isn't fun anymore. And hardcore players don't care about these casual players either. They will just stomp away until they literally can't anymore. Don't you see these things Bungie? You've got to stop this before too much damage is done. You have over-estimated your player bases' kindness, patience, and determination. People don't care about each other like you probably think they do. People will do whatever makes themselves feel good even if other people have to pay for it. And people don't have the patience or determination to stick through the bad times to see if something good comes around. I know the counter arguments are out there saying good things about CBMM and the player base. I think the Crucible deserves a playlist (not in the bottom corner of the screen either) dedicated to CBMM for a different environment, a different choice. And I know some people care as I do. But SBMM really needs to be in most Crucible playlists. I'd rather have a fair fight every time... Than to have faster matchmaking and chaos all around me. And you got to see your player base for what it really amounts too. Don't naively under-estimate the ability of your player base to destroy itself. Because it's happened before and it is currently happening again. Bungie you've got to turn SBMM back on soon and control your player base. Just like the police had to be sent into that "autonomous zone" recently to stop the people from possibly killing someone else. This experiment hasn't gone well and needs to be fixed. I pray you guys see this and do the right thing. God Bless anyone who reads this. Thank you.

    • Cbmm has made the game better and brought back thousands of players, if anything the cbmm experiment was a resounding success. The majority of modes should be cbmm - most modes are casual and laid back. The opposite of sbmm which creates sweaty, close and competitive games - designed for competitive modes. Not casual 6vs6

      • The issue with IB isn't the matchmaking, it's the gamemode.

I only played 12 in the last IB and lost only 5. Of those losses I may have been a mercy loss one or two times. Seemed about the same percentage of wins to losses to for me. I'll have to play more next go around for better results.

In my experience the team with the plat player wins the game, 8 in 10 games. Odds are one plat player per game and there is no balance ensuring the next best players are opposing them. Since I learned that lesson, how I play is relevant in 2 in 10 games. Now I am just trying to have fun, but it has gotten harder to do with the balance so far out of whack. My stats - Sbmm 52% win rate, 1.8 kd. After cbmm, kd is dropping (unknown rate due to hundreds of games prior to cbmm) and 38%ish win rate fairly consistent even before my realization. End result, matchmaker determines who wins before the game starts 80% of the time, by being placed with or against the plat player. I have numbers, proof, and examples but am not going to include to keep it brief. My analogy is high school football, one team has (insert favorite pro football player here) and may randomly have the support of good players, the other team may or may not randomly have any good players. Who would you put your money on? Where my analogy fails is the likelihood of the pro player having compassion in the high school game is far greater than sweaty players in the crucible. Whoever thinks cbmm is a good idea for the ‘average or lower’ player is stupid or high. ‘Nuff said.

I personally don’t like cbmm but my results are opposite of yours. I was 1.56 KDA with skbmm. With Cbmm I’m sitting at around 1.93. Every match just seems like a bunch of try hards. It isn’t enjoyable.

                  • ... It's not chaos all around you, sbmm just gets you stuck in a rut, you don't get better or improve, playing against people who beat your ass will force you to get better or accept mediocrity...
not included in the DLC
• I agree , the crucible is now abysmal, l have played Destiny since D1 , year 1 and your comments are accurate, I will no longer go in the crucible , I have a visual impairment which means I now spend more time waiting to revive than actually playing . Looking at the after game stats it would seem most people are getting stomped by 1 or 2 players, or a flawless stack thereby making the crucible experience completely unenjoyable. This may well be my last destiny season as the other content is quite poor.

If you want your pinnacle play elimination or comp they are SBMM. If enough of us quit playing, Bungie will take notice, and maybe make a change. What we need is a choice of either SBMM or CBMM. If you want SBMM back boycott crucible. Tell your friends to spead the word.

                          • G'day from Oz mate! Thanks for the post, I've tried to read it as closely as possible and I've drawn some observations based on my experiences (and yours). Firstly, a few days ago there was an announcement that there were record numbers on PvP, or more accurately "The most popular IB ...". This was down to CBMM, and nothing to do with actually enjoying the experience IMO. Logically, a faster connection time = more players online. The enjoyment factor was NOT quantified in the article. The catalyst for more players showing up was also due to the MUCH more accessible rewards available....ie Forward Path and Fool's Remedy with NEW perks. This would probably account for the swell in numbers. What would be interesting is to see the anticipated fall-off in numbers when the IB is over. What all this means IMO is that players have to cross-over to PvP to get PvE weapons that will make a difference. Apart from the Witherhoard, the new Umbral AR, Fusion, Bow & Pulse also come with new perks but are just blah. Little to no extra damage & reload perks across the board for me (thanks RNG, you hammered my enthusiasm again....) may also account for players swamping IB. The strategy then? Get in, do your 25 kills per weapon and get out. AND STAY OUT. That's what I did over 15 matches, got a few extra tokens, deleted the quest/bounties and kept going about "other business".This is due to our similar experience of players above 1060 (YES THEY WERE PRESENT) often in stacks smashing my character at 1035 continually. Imagine the damage output from a 1060 on Rampage x2 on a re-spawned Guardian at 1030....and they were (the stacks) ambushing spawn locations. No fun mate! I am awaiting reset because I'd like to try out my new sidearm and AR in PvE. Other than that, on the whole the new perks that are available like Killing Wind & Sympathetic Arsenal requires kills to kick in. Quite frankly, I have Explosive Payload, Field Prep + Rampage or Kill Clip on most weapons for PvE and PvP....who needs the new perks as they are situational and a secondary by-product of a kill on a stowed weapon? Just thoughts and observations mate. Thanks for the insight.

                            • Initially not a CBMM fan but lag seems to be less (as it should be). The real issue is player and team mismatching I cannot believe Bungie unable to tune the algorithm so that the extreme mismatches are removed.

                              • Didn't read everything you wrote, but I agree with the main idea. This new matchmaking is bad. And I've also been matched with people with bad connections more often than before . Goes figure. The amount of stupidly unbalanced matches is to much. I just quit the matches that are completely one sided; it's not fun to anyone.

Other than this is probably the most truthful statement about what SBMM does that I've seen from the pro-SBMM crowd. "Control your player base." So much weeping and gnashing of teeth from people when it comes to how controlling they say Bungie is and now the problem with PvP is that they aren't controlling enough?
