What’s the purpose of power levels if everything is the same difficulty?

I.e. older raids and missions that are listed as 750 power recommended but doing said missions 300 power levels above the recommended level offers no advantage at all, not even minuscule ways. basically meaning that power level is completely irrelevant.

  • You Power level advantages cap out at 50 power over what the enemies in the activity are. So for older content where for the most part everyone is over-leveled it's not a factor. For something like the final encounter of the Prophecy Dungeon at 1060, you are going to see a big difference in your incoming and outgoing damage if you are at 1000 compared to when you are 1070+.

    • I was doing the Corrupted mission for the malfeasance quest today, while almost 100 levels over the recommended light level of 750 and I was getting completely MELTED by everything there. The dreaming city enemies have always been overpowered but this is ridiculous

Power is just an artificial number on screen that only has relevance when you're under leveled to any activity, as it severely handicaps you, but it doesn't mean shit in relation with how powerful you are when you reach power cap because you still can be killed by 750 power enemies even if you're at 1040 power. It never makes you truly stronger it only let's you play more activities without being handicapped. Bottom line: Power levels = increase grinding time and gating content. That's the sole reasons for power level. It serves absolutely no other purposes. And that's why Bungie flipped that switch to rinse and repeat mode, every season it resets your power to "zero" and another higher power cap is created. Reaching the power cap in Destiny is like a cat trying to catch his own tail, he will eventually understand it's useless and stop doing it.

        • With the way the game scales you still get killed just as fast by a red bar Dreg at level 1070 as you did at 970. There is little, if any, true power fantasy remaining in the game nowadays. In D1 when you were Lvl 29 you were vulnerable when defending the confluxes in VoG. One you hit Lvl 30 it was noticeable just how much stronger you became. D2, doesn’t offer enough power fantasy and with the nerfs to abilities, guns, & perks our characters are becoming weaker again. Similar to how they were when D2 launched.

          • This post I approve. Honestly I believe with sunsetting they should change the entire level scaling system, as well as the weapon lvl vs total light system. They need to make it where players who want to use their old weapons eventually can by sacrificing enough power levels. The problem is if you shoot a 1050 enemy with a 750 weapon, it does like 3x less damage than normal. It needs to be based off your total light level, not the individual weapons. Also changing the scaling system allows light to be more than just a barrier for content entry. It can also be a way to become stronger against older content enemies. It just has to be scaled right. Imagine if Leviathan was still 300 power. You’d be able to kill dogs with 1 stack and a melee.

Did the prophecy at LL 1058... took 3 Jotun shots to kill yellow bars. Now at LL 1068... takes 3 Jotun shots to kill the yellow bars. Marvelous. I wonder what it will be when I'm 1078?

            • Remember Light Level? When you could go back to the cosmodrome and walk as a god amongst dregs who could barely damage you as every 1 shotted them. Or you could run old raids and 1phase everything with ease because the Light Level (ironically) made you more powerful. Power Level feels like a shackle, Light Level felt as if our chains were broken

LL only matters when Bungie thinks it should. There are some 750 encounters where enemies still two-shot you regardless of your level.

This has been an issues. I played 750 NightFall and the AI feels like... 1000 light! My head even said: "this isn't right?" 1020 when I am 1040. Its like 1050!

                  • Power is just a carrot on a stick to keep players grinding an playing the game, it's funny they keep throwing out the term mmo but yet they never actually let you out grow content like most mmo's do, they constantly cap your power, which is why this power grind needs to be removed it's sucking all the fun out of this game to constantly have to regrind to a soft cap just to do the same content you just were able to do the previous season.

                    • To gatekeep, timegate, content and to force the playerbase to engage with “ritual” content Like Strikes Crucible Gambit Nightfall Flashpoint Nightmare hunts Dungeons Because why? To flex their “engagement“ numbers across the entire game menu so they always have “robust activity” #’s Which are of course artificial due to the fact that Bungie funnels players to these activities with pinnacles for players to “level up” and get “STRONGER” to tackle “Aspirational Pinnacle Activities” like the new dungeon Otherwise Light level or Power level or Thread Count Level or Whatever fake name Level is simply meaningless But it is a tool used by Bungie to force players to engage in ways we would otherwise avoid due to the fact that players ACTUALLY WANT TO PLAY NEW CONTENT not grind 70 strikes and 50 crucible matches and 20 dungeon clears and 3 raids and who knows what else before you hit the right frickin numbers to be now allowed to participate in the SEASONAL PUBLIC EVENT Yup. The power grind and what it is now is the reason I will not preorder nor buy come September. I will miss next season and take it as an opportunity to see if the game delivers or I’d it’s time to walk away for good. Sucks cause I played a lot of D1 and D2 up until now. I’ve never before felt like this Facts

                    • How boring would it be if we could stomp everything without a risk of defeat? The game is too easy already. I'm sure what you're asking for has been tested and rejected.

Ever heard of the illusion of choice? The illusion of power. It's nothing but a literal entry barrier because everything scales up once you attain and surpass that level. Enemies in certain activities hit just as hard when you're +1000 as they did when you were +750

                      • Power level doesn’t need to be relevant. Not everything can be easy for you just because you waited a while. Every activity must be the same for everyone.

timegating content , inflating minimum mandatory playtime before you can play what you purchased , if anything levels should be tied to linear XP collecting

                        • Access is the only point to power level, otherwise it means nothing.

                        • They need to do away with the whole Power Level system and replace it with a progression system of stats and expanding skill trees.

Yeah it's depressing. I've been grinding like crazy for a chance to finish certain quests or surviving specific challenges but now I'm 1060+ and STILL getting my ass kicked by so called 750 level enemies 😕 I don't know exactly how the game mechanics work RE light level but I'm starting to feel like I'm wasting my time on the grind for power 😳

Power levels exist solely to gatekeep content. That's it. Makes perfect sense for endgame PvP such as Iron Banner,Trials, or hell even Gambit. It gives players a reason to continue boosting their light for a strength advantage against weaker opponents. However, overleveling is absolutely pointless in PvE since everyone gets reduced down to 50 light above the recommended (i.e. You're always 800 light in a 750 activity even if your light is beyond 800). This was done with the intent of keeping you from steamrolling lower end content, yet that just makes the whole point of a light system redundant if you get stronger just to stay weaker. This has been an ongoing debate ever since D1 and is still a recurring topic because it just makes no practical sense. We can already see that challenging activities will remain challenging well after you exceed that light level, so if overleveling is effectively pointless, why not either make it match your light at all times or just plain remove the light system out of redundancy? Heck, you could just remove light from PvE entirely and keep it in PvP and nothing would ultimately change.
