Guardian Mental Health

Guardians die in very painful ways being burned, electrocuted, stabbed, crushed, falling from great heights, and blown up, the list goes on, think about the mental trauma from that plus watching all your non-Guardian friends aging and dying, so what keeps Guardians from just giving up or having a complete mental breakdown? We know Guardians lose the fear of their own death instead that fear seems to transfer to losing their Ghost or their ability to resurrect they only fear death when there is no coming back, but we have never seen any sort of Guardian acclimation period to becoming immortal in the lore so when does their mind change? How do you go from eating ramen with your friend to murdering them for sport and entertainment of the city in the Crucible?

He has never been the same since. LOL

    • I feel like it would be something like Groundhog Day. At some point I think all guardians go a bit insane. But look at Osirus and Ikora. If you find someone immortal to love, it normally works out.

    • In D1, the Festival of the Lost featured a bounty that required us to put on an Atheon mask and jump off the Tower to our deaths. We pretty much treat murder, death and suicide as a joke.

      • The ones that get PTSD fly off to the secret pacifist colony with Efrideet. There is also lore that states that guardians that lived through the Dark Age are pretty messed up in the head. Drifter is a perfect example.

        • Yep. In the Jade Rabit lore tab, Daito created Imortalia. It’s a drug designed to help guardians with their problem of “fighting, dying, and repeating the cycle.”

          • It starts at around year three, losing grasp of reality. They accept more and more of the same old bs with ever diminishing returns. Deja vu isn't just a way of life, it's fun! They find themselves buying the same stuff they bought years ago, and are so numbed they conflate any enjoyment they have now with what they've actually forgotten new experiences felt like. It gets to the point that they spend most of their time doing variations of strikes and bounties and patrols they did six years ago mumbling, "it's still fun," while looking at the same gun they got three months ago, but this one has shittier perks but higher light, through glassy, foggy eyes. Their mind and spirit have been broken without them even noticing. The light is a lie. They'll wander forever in darkness. Drone slaves of a smug Scarab Lord.

            • In D1 Zavala had to Tower's PA system to chastise Lightbearers that "....having a Ghost is no excuse for recreational Tower jumping!" This implies that quite a few Guardians are not all there.
Always brush your teeth.
• Wasn’t there a guardian who died so much that she went insane and started wrecking some abandoned part of the city? I don’t recall which lore card it was.

              • Guardians forget what happened before they die and how they die so they just die, come back, and continue on with their life. They don’t have trauma or ptsd.

                • Guardians are insane, and it starts when they are resurrected for the first time. The Ghosts completely wipe their minds so guardians start out as a clean slate.

                • Like anyone else who trains, you eat, sleep, fight, and look out for your mates. Death is a non factor for guardians, so you can push yourself harder.

                • Like soldiers, guardians are probably conditioned (during first resurrection) to not be afraid of dying to being: shot, stabbed, crushed, falling and others, it also helps that they are quick deaths. But for example, hive torture like in the Titan Strike when they turn them into crystals, or Omar having his light fed to ogres in the hellmouth, is something that guardians have trauma about but those that do tend to die to something else before feeling the full trauma.

We've seen the mental toll of being a Lightbearer, both physically and mentally. Just look as Eris, Asher, and Drifter (despite not being a Guardian). Drifter has clearly seen some shit since being rezzed during the Dark Age, to the point where he can't trust anyone- at least not closely. We already know much of Eris's story and how she focuses her remaining sanity towards destroying the Hive. As for Asher, well, he has mentioned that he's thought about suicide and/or mercy killing his ghost after the event with Brakion, but distracts himself in his research (which explains his Squidward-esque personality). They each have some kind of coping mechanism to deal with their PTSD even if it isn't entirely healthy. Not every Guardian has gone through such turmoil either, especially those particular cases, so the degree of their mental health and how they cope with it likely varies. We know from the Jade Rabbit's lore tag that there are dru- medications out there to help Guardians cope with their PTSD for example.

                • There definitely are breaking points in a Guardian, but there realistically are different ways to think about death for a Guardian. Whenever you drop a rock down a dark pit, it is kind of anxiety-inducing. Dropping a rock down a lit-up pit has a much lesser effect on the psyche, at least for me. Guardian thanatology is a legitimate thing, in which they test and see how many different ways they can die, how far they have to fall, how long do they have to burn, etc. (There’s a grimoire entry on this, forget the name sadly.) Knowing there is a bottom to that pit is somewhat comforting, but knowing what it takes to reach that bottom is much more so. And then there are the Guardians who just don’t care about dying, as long as the Ghost is there to bring them back up. Another Guardian mindset could be that they consider themselves safe, if their Ghost is safe. No matter the cost of what they may personally go through, they know they can just get up again, and keep chugging along, due to how they take care of their Ghost.

We’ve seen mental illness take a massive toll on Guardians. PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Addiction, to name a few. Many characters have shown their general struggle. Asher, Eris and Zavala are key characters that come to mind. Each having struggles they’ve dealt with. In some cases, weapon companies like Daito have made capsules to help guardians cope with mental illness, shown in the Jade Rabbit lore tab. I could go on for ages talking about this topic, but I’ll just leave you with these (my personal take on Eris’ possible struggle with Depression). Truth be told, I think all of that would be pretty alright for the psychopathic world cleansing super “heros” known as guardians. What truly drives the hunters to tie their cloaks to a fan, Titans to swan dive into the last city with no helmet, and for warlocks to commit the equivalent of space seppuku... all the -blam!-in bounties.... like holy shit how many HVTs do you need shot, how many mats do you need gathered....... how many times do you have to clear this lost sector before they stop coming back like the incessant cockroaches they are...

Guardians do develop mental health issues. We already have plenty of lore on it. Older Guardians almost always suffer from high levels of stress and also develop antisocial tendencies, usually ending up only having a close relationship with their own Ghost. Guardians can also suffer from madness and other mental health issues. The a Drifter is our primary example of the extreme levels of stress found in those revived centuries ago in the Dark Ages (which was discussed in a report from one of the Guardians that was tasked with keeping an eye on him). Eris and Asher Mir are both examples of Lightbearers who suffered through very traumatic situations. Ghost Stories has an example of a Guardian that went completely mad. Kabr and Orin are both examples of Guardians who were driven mad by external sources (Vex radiolaria and the Nine’s visions, respectively)
