Any one else prefer Destiny 1 art style

Destiny 2 art style is fine....I’m not saying The art is bad because it is fantastic and does look great. But not for a destiny game. It’s more realistic aesthetic makes environments look more generic and less unique to the destiny franchise. An example of this is the Vex architecture. Notice how on pieces of vex architecture there are blue lights covering it head to toe. This makes it look bright, clean and overall different to that of destiny 1 vex architecture, that felt rustic dark, gritty and had the sense of the vex being an ancient and mysterious species from beyond our system. Also the design of the vex goblin I’m not a fan of, those really big heads seem too cartoony for the aesthetic they are creating and I know that Bungie think they are dumb because in the cure of Osiris cinematic they use D1 Vex design cause they know a cartoony large head wouldn’t look good in a realistic cinematic. Another gripe is with the hive. Does anyone hate this new orange lighting and objects they are adding to everything for the hive. Go ahead and look at the chamber of the night in D1 and D2. In D1 the creepy dark lit area with hints of green lighting create a creepy aesthetic for the place. But in D2 they slapped a big orange light lighting up the place and making it seem more comforting and less creepy. It’s like in D2 the team don’t know how to create dark lit creepy atmospheres. Everything is so bright. The cartoony and realistic mix from destiny 1 was unique to the franchise and was a recongnisable feature of the game, but by changing the art style rather than just updating the graphics of the original art style with more detail and polished i feel like D2 alienates those fans who loved D1 so much. The same can be said for the armor, enemy design etc. We need to make this heard otherwise if D3 comes around I fear it would be more like D2 than D1. But that is just my opinion. What’s yours?

Absolutely Even though there’s less ‘supposed technical quality’ in D1 graphics The grainy grittier style & the actual details in the armour & weapons makes the game look like we were Space Warriors The apocalypse, the wrecked ruins & destroyed hardware (boats/planes etc), the Enemy, All seemed directed at an older gamer (not 18+) The concept art was amazing For those who’ve got a spare hour & want to watch something about Destiny (the franchise) & how it was created - watch this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiDbv7nftM8 “43:08 If all the haircuts and tattoos starts you thinking MMO, dont worry, its a Bungie Action Shooter” (I think that was lost on Scaraboush) A real eye opener to how Bungie was (and the amazing world they wanted to create - great armour (dig that cloak) - space tigers - TRADE LOOT!) & how that concept would have been amazing! How Joe Staten & Chris Barrett (15 years of working together) were overlooked for Luke, is a mystery Watching that video - oh how Bungie have lost their way (spark, drive, ideas & talent) ——- But D2 feels like it’s aimed at the younger gen, more cartoon style graphics & dialogue Example: Ghost - “Thats the most powerful thing I’ve ever seen” regarding Xol Ghost being a coward during the Curse of Osiris DLC D2 Vanilla release was aimed at a different market, the younger generations pocket money & MTX Destiny 1 was envisaged/built/released during a different era (2006 development through to 2014 release) Remember the 10 year ‘Become Legend’ plan Keeping our gear, emblems, ships & looking the bees knees 5/6/7 years in Legends aren’t born from Bounties & FOMO Legends decide their own path! Bungie forgot that & chased the money

      • ESPECIALLY hand cannons. The older ones were super recognizable and all had the same basic silhouette. Most looked just like what they’re supposed to be: Space revolvers. Lots of D2 hand cannons look like goddamn abstract art works.

        • Not a style. It's a priority. D2 the priority is great eververse ornaments and subpar in game looking armor.

        • Hard agree. Destiny felt more gritty and true to the theme of the game. D2 focuses on vibrant colors and flashy surfaces to attempt to please the eye.

        • D1 had a more tone appropriate and realistic art style. Vastly prefer it. Eveything looks cartoonish and plastic in d2.

        • I still play D1 here and there and have always preferred the artwork over that of D2. D2 looks like they approached ' Pixar ' to design the majority of the game.

          • first there will likely be no D3 because the screams as bungie shut down the D1 game so as to cut costs would deafen humanity. also d2 is moving to an always live state - events from the past, are just that. you are intended from now on to play any dlc storyline once, aside from ikora and the heroic story missions replays. after the next season, those events only exist in the lore and in the memories of those players who played them. new players will just have to stay confused as to what the campaigns they are playing refer to. but i think you will likely find the d1 style was down to the limits of the hardware it was designed for. it may be on ps4 and xbox 1 but it also (iirc) was designed to run on xbox 360 and ps3, both lower hardware level consoles than current or next gen. it also wasnt on pc, possibly because pc owners had higher expectations, or maybe it was just the deal they had with activision. cartoony graphics are less intensive to implement, require colour palettes with fewer colours in, and so on. less memory and processor intensive, and those are necessities when limited by console hardware.

I said much of this when the game first launched. The aesthetic has changed drastically. The Vex look very different. The Hive are very smooth looking now and eveything is so bright. I honestly don't care much for the lighting and clean look of the game now. In my opinion the environments have changed beavily between the two games. D1 locations gave the impression that you were truly in a post collapse world. Dark, gritty, skeletons scattered around. You were literally exploring the ruins of a world that once was. D2 seems to place much more emphasis on large grand open areas meant to wow you. That's nice and all, but it creates such a different feel. So many people praise the Dreaming City. Don't get me wrong its breathtaking, but also a prime example of what I'm describing. The dark dinghy vibe of D1 coupled with the music inspired hope. It made your character truly seem like a force of light in a world consumed by darkness. D2, to me, has become an attempt to recapture whaw was said about D1 without truly understanding what it was. Just my 2 cents.

                • Yeah, I know what you mean D2 is beautiful in its own right, but there was just something abotu the D1 style that I really, really enjoyed.. Even though D2 does look nice, I Def liked the D1 style.

                • What gets me about D2 are the shaders. They are muddled and muted. They take away from the details of armor rather than highlight them like D1.

                  • D1's art style was very reminiscent of 1970s-era science fiction illustrations for novel covers, movie posters, prog rock album covers, etc. Even a lot of the colour schemes and logo designs are from that era, which is rather nostalgic for those of us who grew up reading those books and imagining these vast crumbling galactic empires, remnants of long-dead ancient alien civilizations, universe-spanning intergalactic conflicts going on for millennia. Although D2's art style isn't bad, I think near the end of D1, the cohesive art style from launch had changed somewhat and wasn't as consistent, and D2 lacks that same consistent aesthetic that was envisioned for the Destiny franchise originally, at least based on the original concept art for Destiny franchise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuMIrHlAf2Q

                    • First you say that D2 is too stylistically “realistic” while saying D2 has too much “cartoony” elements. Which is it? Also I think D2 artwork is great, look at the armors from D1. More fantasy, more cartoony IMO. I have both D1 and D2 art books, theres good artwork in both. HOWEVER... the person designing the Titan armor NEEDS TO BE FIRED for the disrespect my titan brothers have to wear. I’m a hunter, but can’t stand looking at some of the Titan armor. They need to sit the art department down and make them watch the 2013 GDC DESTINY 1 PRESENTATION to get their bearings straight and get back to the original concept. The COLOR PALETTE 🎨 IN DESTINY 1 were DULL OFF COLORS. It made the whole game have an AGED looked. They wouldn’t use white, they’d use “off white”, they wouldn’t use a BRIGHT RED they’d use a burgundy. Also the inspiration for the classes. Hunter=bounty hunters, cowboys, smugglers Titan=Sport athletes, Master Chief, soldiers Warlocks=Wizards, Gandalf, Einstein FOCUS ON THOSE to bring class individually. Titans should have some combat-esk helmets. There’s ALOT of good stuff in that 2013 GDC DESTINY PRESENTATION if you want to check it out and see how DESTINY was CREATED. https://youtu.be/ZiDbv7nftM8

                    • D1 looked like we were saving the world from ruin from darkness D2 looks like forced in comedy Considering the original campaigns, I'd say the art fits the game
