Why do people hate gambit?

Hello! Gambit is probably my favorite mode in the D2 because its always what I wanted, a PvPvE mode. But apparently theres more than enough people who despise the mode but I cant seem to find a reason why nor these people giving their reasoning. So I ask directly, what are the reasons for not liking gambit? Edit: So after reading all these replies I understand now the complaints. At the same time it sounds like majority of complaints come from (Not to be that guy) being bad at the mode.

  • I personally love Gambit. I was terrible at it at first and hated invasions, being all PVE and no PVP, but I've learned to appreciate the invasion dynamic as a way to stage quick reversals and turnarounds that, IMHO, are part of what make the game so exciting. While the three-round format can be long-ish, it gives teams the chance to change tactics and recover from a sloppy run in the first round. I've been on tons of teams that got pasted the first round, then pulled their act together an made an awesome comeback to take the game. It makes me sad that the rewards aren't better and more frequent. I really loved grinding for the curated rolls of Trust and Bad Omens, and for Python and Hush, so it's dissapointing to see less of them this season. If you're having a hard time with Gambit, try it with the following tweaks. Note that I'm NOT an invader. I play for motes and Primeval DPS, and generally only fight invaders if I have to, and only actively hunt them when my team is having a hard time dealing with them. Also, I'm a hunter main, so my build suggestions will all be for hunters: 1. Try to go in with a minimum resilience score of 60-65, more if you can do it without sacrificing your other stats entirely. 2. Bring at least 1 special in your energy slot that reloads itself, like Prometheus Lens, or, better yet, any fast-firing shotgun with an auto-loading holster. Bring a special ammo finder or an ammo finder for the special you've specifically brought along. This allows for an initial rush into a section full of adds that allows you to immediately decrease the number of guns targeting you from all sides. This works especially well right out of the gate in the first round, when the enemies aren't as tough. You wade in, shotgun 5 or 6 of the first enemies you see, then take out what's left nearby at your leisure. It gives you an easy mote advantage at the top of the game, and gives your team some wiggle room, should the opposing team prove to be persistent and efficient. I personally have a Retold Tale, maxed out for range, with auto-loading and full auto in my energy slot, and it does this job very, very nicely. Paired with my Arc cloak loaded with Powerful Friends and Pump action, I keep my movement high and I'm able to convert all those shotty kills into super energy. Because shottys do immense DPS at point-blank range, a quick-firing shotgun can also be used in a panic maneuver on your primeval when a round looks like it's going to be close. Run right up to the primeval and rip a clip right into its face. Yes, you'll get stomped, but you'll do way more damage then you would have bopping in and out of cover and plinking away with your primary. I've pushed my team over the victory line numerous times using this tactic. Have a shotty with boss spec mounted? Vorpal weapon? Why not both? It can only help, in this department. I addition, if you have any old-school armor lying around in your vault, remember that they often dropped with random rolls that included ammo finders, and they seem to stack. I have a Memory of Cayde cloak that allows me to choose between a heavy and special ammo finder, and it helps keep me in shotty ammo for the whole game when I pair it with the special or shotgun ammo finder in my next-gen helmet. 3.Don't bring a sniper rifle unless invading is your jam. There's too much cover to make it useful against the adds on all the boards, too much fire to avoid a flinch-miss at the wrong moment, it won't always be the best way to take on a really aggressive invader, and it'll take up one of your weapon slots uselessly for most of the time. Alternately, bring an exotic like Prometheus Lens or Riskrunner, or even Huckleberry that dishes out tons of damage, bullet-hose style, and self-reloads. Fusion rifles are okay, just avoid one with too much kick or a long charge time. Again, add-clearing is the name of the game. Bring a special finder, or your high-tech ray gun will become a fancy paperweight after the first ten shots. Jotunn can help clear adds better than other fusions, but I personally wouldn't recommend using up my exotic slot with it unless your'e a career invader. 4. If you have it, put Malfeasance in your primary. While it can be a bit of a pain to use against the adds, it is HUGELY effective against Taken and Invaders. With sustained fire, it melts blockers like nobody's business. Against invaders, it has the same effect as a gun with Vorpal Weapon in PVP on a supered-up guardian. 4 or 5 rounds, and down they go. I often do 25% to 35% primeval damage at the end of a round, just by hanging back and using Malfeasance to killl the envoys and then put every round I can on the big guy. If you don't have room in your helmet for a hand cannon targeting mod, at the very least equip an HC loader or unflinching aim. Equip all three, and Malfeasance goes from being an interesting exotic with a neat perk, to a Taken-slaying powerhouse. If you're going to employ my strategy, then HC ammo finder, reserves, or primary ammo finder can be huge helps as well. If you don't have Malfeasance, consider a weapon with fast-fire, fast reload, and one or two different perk/mod combos: The demolitionist/grave robber combo is an awesome pairing on an AR, SMG, or even a fast-firing sidearm. Melee kills reload a part of your mag, and generate fresh primary ammo. Gun kills generate grenade energy, and using said grenade reloads your mag completely. If you have an armor mod that boosts grenade energy, or turns grenade damage into super damage, this combo can have you popping supers or laying down arcbolt hell with far greater frequency. Vorpal weapon paired with an ammo generating or reloading mod can also really help with those yellow bars. Think overflow, grave robber, feeding frenzy, subsistence, etc. It may not DPS like malfeasance, but it'll give you something to shoot the primeval with at the end of an especially tough round, when you're most likely to be out of special/heavy, and waiting for supers and grenades to recharge. Avoid non-malfeasance hand cannons, with the exception of Crimson, with it's large mag, healing factor, and self-reload perk, and Sunshot, which can wipe groups of adds out with it's uber-dragonfly power. If you must bring one, go for fast firing, fast-reload models with outlaw or some other reload perk. Scouts and pulse rifles have limited usefulness in gambit, with the exception of Polaris lance and Graviton Lance, again for the same enhanced Dragonfly mechanics. to be continued...

    • The biggest problem I see is that not everyone on your team is there to win.

        • Where to start.... the invading is broken (both sides) I dont belidve you should have walhacks the entire time but also dont believe there should be a timer on invasion either kill the invader or be killed (max 4 kills by the invader) I also think invasion happens too often because there is no downside to invasions. When trying to invade you should have to pay X amount of motes fron your bank each time. Also invasions happen too often especially durring boss dps phases. People time it perdect so always invading when you go to dps. I believe that heavy weapons should not be useable durring invasions. Makes things far too easy (truth rocket I'm looking at you...). It could have been ab amazing game mode but unfortunately it was completely botched... its pvp for people who are not good at pvp and pve for people who enjoy a horde mode type game.

        • Must be your favorite cause you like to invade and camp the fodder guardians while they are distracted banking motes or fighting primevil, yeah "awesome" game mode.

        • HHHHHMMMM let me think this one out. I HATE GAMBIT because it’s unfair when you run into a 4 stacked team when you are solo, I invaded one time and there entire team just camped invader spawns. Blockers when they spawn in take a shot of heroine and the captains are the single most annoying thing I have ever faced. The loot is recycled and bland and the perks are not to great for me. Matches are long and grindy which makes it unappealing for most. People RARELY run gambit prime because they realize they can just do the reckoning and get the same thing at a better drop chance. It’s hard for new players because light level advantage is on and they also get stomped by ads who are also on heroine. If Bungie added a solo playlist then that would also help. But it seem like when you are invading you are FORCED to use JOÜTUNN, Truth, leviathan, 1k,Xenophage, or Wisper as they are all extremely powerful and most 1 shot. Invaders have a BIG advantage and the people getting invaded are left guessing where they can be. And those who say invaders are at a disadvantage because it’s 4 on 1 well that 1 person has an over shield, wall hacks, power ammo (because when the portal comes up power spawns), the ability to see how many notes each person has, and is at a long range. Many people also hate gambit because of blueberries who steal your motes, AND don’t bank when they have 15 and result in dying. There are many more reasons but that’s why I hate gambit.

        • I have the reckoner and dredgen title so I’ve had my fair share of gambit. I find that the concept of gambit is very great but the players in it can get a little out of had and annoying sometimes especially when solo queueing. There could be a few things tweaked abut it, but I’d say it’s not played much because most people are either pve players or pvp players not many people are both at the same time

          • In a single sentence? Open-world PVP Gambit is a sanitized version of the open-world pvp in see in many RPGs and MMOs. Open world pvp is divisive in every community in which its introduced. Because it gives one player (generatlly the one who wants to PVP) the abilty to negatively impact (usually the person who wants to play PVE) someone else's play experience. So generally what happens is open world PVP turns into a Ganker's Paradise....and players either love it or hate it. Now the problems unique to Gambit. 1. The role of PVP and PVE are WAY out of balance. So the game basically plays like a PVP game mode with bouts of almost inconsequential PVE in between. Which ever team wins the PVP encounters wins the match. This is a HUGE turn off to PVE players. 2. One skilled PVE player cannot carry a weak team. Especially one with players who keep dying with lots of motes on them. But one skilled PVP player can control the flow of an entire match, and effectively determine who wins. Again, this is a HUGE turn off to PVE players. 3. The way Gambit's PVP is set up, it is an unbalanced contest of build strength and adaptability. Its fast, nasty, and always fought with the fastest-killing method and each player's disposal. This is a frustration to many PVP players used to arena shooters and "balanced" pvp. 4. Invasion is too frequent, and has too much of an impact. Because---like so many Bungie PVP modes----there are tons of snowball mechanics, and very few catch up mechanics. So once the momentum of the game turns against you----or if the other team decides to play from behind----you can start to feel that the game is just one long, continuous invasion. That is tilting. 5. The game mode is extremely punishing. Especially if you have new, inexperienced, or unfocused players on your team. I ***H-A-T-E*** playing Gambit on any day where Drifter has a bounty up for deposting 15 motes or large blockers. Because that guarantees you will have some blueberry on your team who just runs around trying to deposit 15 motes at a time for that damn bounty....without any regard for the flow of the game. So he's the guy who always has a crap ton of motes on him whenever you get invaded. Dies with them...and puts the team in a hole they can't get out of without having to constantly invade the other team. Or---more typically---you just get rolled. Again, makes for a not-very-fun experience. 6. No SBMM.

People that usually don’t like it are either bad at it, don’t know how to deal with blockers, lose motes all the time, don’t know when to bank notes, don’t know how to deal with invaders, or all the above. It’s a great mode if you know how to play the game mode the way it was intended to be played. There’s too many brainless people in the world. That’s why the game mode is as hated as it is.

            • I think there are many people who just don’t understand it. Out of all the titles I’ve unlocked (Wayfarer/ Unbroken/ Dredgen/ Reckoner/ Undying/ Savior/ Flawless/ Conqueror/ Almighty), Reckoner was my favorite to unlock. I used to hate Gambit, but the pursuit of Reckoner really opened my eyes and gave me a huge appreciation for Gambit and Reckoning. I fell in love with invading, and reaping, and Reckoning, and realized how awesome and useful many of the perks on those armors actually are. Combine that with certain weapons for certain play styles for certain roles and yeah, Gambit and Gambit Prime became some of my favorite D2 content. I haven’t done them much this season though due to the pursuit of other titles and gear and but yeah, it’s there when I want to play it and despite frustrating games every now and then I love it.

              • It suffers the same curse as PvP. If you're losing by a significant amount, any fun is gone and it just becomes a slog. You're just sitting around waiting for the other team to win.

I thought just go in and have fun doesn't matter if we win or lose I'm only doing it for the pinnacle anyways. First game I did ok. Then the second game. Holy moly, I was collecting motes and banking like no tomorrow. Then the invasion portal opened. I went in 4 guardians dead. Came back on today and thought they I'll have another game and do bounties in gambit prime. Same again 4 guardians dead. If you know me you'll know I'm not great at the pvp side. And usually not that good at pve. But I'm addicted now.

              • I love gambit. But have a hard time getting my crew to play it with me. The reasons I’ve picked up on. It’s very easy to snowball. 2 large blockers and a decent invader can snowball the game very quickly. Truth, snipers, xenophage hammerhead, thunderlord leviathans breath and others. All incredibly easy cheap invasion weapons in gambits open maps. The reasons they do play is for the loot and pinnacles. Gambit has a really good loot pool. But I just play it for fun. I’m a dredged and reckoner. I find destiny in its entirety is unbalanced and unfair. So I just accept it and play the mode itself for the enjoyment.

              • The Heavy Ammo economy. Certain pvp weapons like autos are bad against ads and that, pvp and pve is extremely hard to balance. I enjoy gambit as long as I am not being killed 3 times in a row with a heavy weapon.
