I had this discussion at work a few days ago. I think most of us "normal" folks would agree that a "couple" means 2 in 99% of cases. But how many is a "few"?
"Can you hand me a few of those?"
"I'm going out with a few friends tonight."
"I need to go get a haircut in the next few days!"
Is it subjective? Does it depend on the topic or conversation? Just curious.

3-4. Case closed. 5 is pushing it. Anything past that is in several territory.
-
I'm going to take a few days to think about this.
-
a few = several Hope that clears things up for you.
-
It`s all relative, but generally 3
-
Three or four
-
4 RepliesI was always taught that a few is equal to two.

1 ReplyWhen you’re talking about most things, a couple is 2. But when you’re talking about Oreos, a couple is about one row.
-
6+!? Thank god nobody is THAT insane
-
2-5 about.

1 ReplyEdited by Partisan: 5/22/2020 2:43:30 PMCouple - 2 Few - 3 Some - 4 or 5 Several - 6 or 7 Many - 7 to 10 A lot - 10+ Alot - alot These are per the imperial units at least, not sure what it would be in metric

Edited by manowar: 5/22/2020 5:07:25 PMIf you ask me to hand you a few, you will get 2. If I ask for a few I expect everything. Jk :)

1 ReplyI just voted 3, but for the most part when I say “a few”, I mean around 3-5.
-
It’s not a specific number, it’s 3+. Don’t know what the upper limit is, but it’s also not a lot.
-
It's all about context. Having a few drinks, probably 2-3. Having a few popcorn shrimp, maybe 5-10. Having a few free peanuts, 20 or 30. In general, a few just indicates a number or amount that is below conventional expectations.

Anywhere up to 6 of something would be considered "a few" to me... Seven or more would be "Several"....
-
"A couple" is 2. "A few" is vague, but it's less than "some". Some should be a reasonable amount. A few would imply the number is smaller than one would expect under normal circumstances. That's my take anyway.

1 ReplyEdited by Ghostmime: 5/22/2020 11:37:00 AMA couple is always 2. A few should technically always be 3. 4+ is several. Edit: but I'm not sure the technicalities really matter as long as people know what you mean.

It is supposed to be 3 but I say it for anywhere between 3 and 100
