Are darkness zones canon or are they just pure gameplay?

<Yes and no. For the Fallen, Cabal (barring the Red War), and most Vex areas, just gameplay. The only times death is permanent in these zones BECAUSE of the area they're in, it's either the Vault of Glass (time shit/Gorgon unreal maker 3.0), any deep-rooted Hive nest (actual Darkness), or... well, the Pyramid for obvious reasons.>

Yes and no. Canonically there are locations that have such a potent darkness presence that Ghost become unable to revive their Guardians

They’re cannon, I think. It’s as the name suggests, a place where the Darkness has a presence and can suppress your Ghosts light. Though, it’s obviously not a physical presence, and is most likely an area “tainted” by the Darkness during the Collapse. I still think you should’ve gotten your abilities taken away when entering the enduring abyss and the Pyramid.
