To start off.. I love toggle crouch and pretty much swear by it. I feel it puts a lot less strain on your thumb which can be quite painful if you frequently find yourself crouching. Especially if your creeping around.
But on the subject of it being "toggle" crouch. I can't possibly think of a logical reason as to why I'm forced to stand up from taking any sort of damage whatsoever.
As many of you probably know, crouching actually does make your weapon more accurate. I.E. I can fire my weapon in a more rapid manner with slightly less bloom. And yes, that may sound like an unfair advantage to anyone who dosen't use toggle crouch. But their fully capable of doing it too. So no problem there.
But then theres the disadvantages of it. As a target I may be slightly smaller but I'm also terribly less maneuverable. Which makes me much more susceptible to a number of things.
And one last thing. Using toggle crouch, because I'm forced to stand up whenever I take damage, I'm almost completely unable to crouch mid battle to dodge a bullet or two due to the fact that partially into my crouch I'll take a bullet and be forced to stand right back up. Which in many cases can mean the difference between living and dying.
(Also, because I was unable to fit this into the title. What exactly does Clench Protection specifically do?
I play with the Green Thumb controller setting and without clench turned on I frequently find myself doing assassinations in situations that almost certainly get me killed. But with it I frequently find myself getting Beat Downs constantly when I'd have much rather done an assassination!)
So in short. The TL;DR version is simply this...
Is there ANY logical reason why I'm forced to stand up while taking ANY sort of damage while toggle crouched?
And what exactly does Clench Protection do?

Its the game telling you its time to stand up and fight.

I would love to know if this is something that Bungie is willing to address.
Posted by: TheJadedTarget I use crouch a lot more for the benefits it gets in Reach, I was never a particularly stealthy player. However, I've always held to crouch. The way I see it is if you can walk around the map without any effort, then the drawback is you stand when shot. Possibly making you an easy target from behind cover, nullifying your stealth, and removing the crouching bonus you get when aiming. Much like how you unzoom when shot. But for me, I get the benefit to remain crouched because it is taking physical effort to keep the analog stick held down while I move. My benefit for constantly using muscle pressure to keep the analog stick down is that I can engage someone while still crouched. And I feel the precision of holding to crouch and releasing to stand is a good system. So maybe you don't like it but it seems perfectly logical to me that the more difficult option provides a better reward. And maybe you could think of it this way, Toggle is meant for stealthier players that will see less combat while Hold is meant for people who use aggression more than stealth. But I've never had a real problem holding down the analog stick for extended duration. Minutes, even. I'm not even that athletic of a person. :P
Pressing your thumb is considered effort? I'll have to tell my professor that I put forth "effort" by putting my name at the top a sheet of paper for my otherwise 10 blank page essay.

I use toggle crouch because it is just easier to crouch walk. I don't think it increases the accuracy though, I've never seen the bloom noticeably less when crouched. I'm fine with the standing up when you take damage, because it lets you run away faster to regroup (instead of having to press the thumbstick and then running). I do hate that grenade damage makes you stand up even if it barely damages you and your dot appears on the radar. [Edited on 10.21.2010 5:29 PM PDT]

I never used toggle crouch until Reach, but dear god I don't know how I survived in halo 3 without it. It's made my thumbs much happier since I do a lot of crouching to avoid making radar dots, since that's sort of my game play as being sneaky sneaky. I wish I didn't stand when taking damage either. It's weird. I think it may be a coding issue, but I'm no expert. If you take damage you're likely not gonna wanna crouch again, and I'm not an advocate of crouching under dmr/sniper shots. Seems stupid to me.
Posted by: Suzaku2809 Don't you stand up if you're crouched and start getting shot at if you don't have toggle crouch? You did in the other 4 games...
Nope. I think two or three people posting here already confirmed that.

TC user here I always thought the standing up when shot thing was the armour sheilds forcing you upright to absorb the force of the hit but if push to crouchers can take hits without getting up then you are right and it dose seem unfair but maybe its time to turn off the toggle.

People keep posting here and I love it. But by the time I finish reading each new post and reply to it, this thread has already fallen off the front page due to all the BS threads burying it. -_- We need a casual forum and a "hardcore" forum. Lol.. >_>

This has been my biggest complaint with Halo, honestly. I always figure my Spartan's just a retard. *takes bullets* "Ow! That hurt! I should stand up to see where it came from instead of staying behind the rock that guy with the controller thinks I ought to. Stupid guy. What does he know?" *stands up and dies* As for Clench, no idea. I didn't like the sound of it and never used it.

Toggle Crouch is the best thing that has happened to FPS's.

Bump. -_-

Bungie!! Give me an answer, lock my thread, tell me to stfu and gtfo! Anything! xD

Without any effort? Are you kidding me Jaded? It would take ANYONE twice as long, if not longer, to traverse the map in any way, shape or form. Especially due to the fact that they couldn't jump to cut corners or take shortcuts. =/ And for the record, no matter what game your playing, you should never be an "easy" target behind cover. Unless under certain situations you should ALWAYS be a harder target to hit behind cover.

I was a TC user. Untill I was getting shot, my whole body behind a rock, just my head sticking out. If I had managed to duck down, I would have survived, thrown a gren, probably killed the guy, ran into the base and maybe have stolen the flag. But alas, i didnt, TC seemed to think there needed to be a cooldown timer between being shot and ducking, which happens to be about the exact amount of time between DMR shots. So the guy kills me, jumps in the tank, which just spawned, blows up a warthog with 3 of our guys in, then a Rev, spawn kills us whilst their team take our flag and go on to win the Game 1-0. THANKS TOGGLE CROUCH! xxxxx Then I decided I'd use the push to crouch. And it hasn't happened since. [Edited on 10.21.2010 1:22 AM PDT]

OP I thought the EXACT SAME THING. I can't seem to crouch into cover worth my life anymore, literally, it was very irritating in Solo Legendary at some points.
Posted by: A 3 Legged Goat I use Toggle Crouch and I've won many 1v1 battles by ducking on their third shot.
Nobody, myself included, said it wasn't possible.
Posted by: SatinOhio It's annoying. I'll be trying to be all sneaky and whatnot, have a grenade take a sliver of my shields away, and then I show up on radar. >_>
As far as I'm concerned. This is even more solid proof of toggle crouch actually hindering the user's gameplay. Happens to me all the time too. =/ Although, as I said earlier, I could understand being forced to stand if the force was enough to lift your feet off the ground. (Which dosen't sound like the case in your scenario.)
Posted by: Davoony Clench protections main purpose is to stop accidental stick clicking. You know those moments when it gets intense and you find your thumbs clenching the sticks too hard and you accidentally get scoped in and keep taking damage, you just endlessly scope in and out.
I did this today with the shotgun. I thought to myself, why the hell am I zooming with a shotgun, lol. I use toggle crouch, its so much easier and I hate it when i'm crouched and it forces me to stand when I get hit. Sometimes I forget getting shot makes you stand and I'll just keep trying to take cover by crouching to heal and end up getting shot, repeating the whole process.
Posted by: OptiMAT I use it, but it doesn't really bother me. As someone else said I think it might be down to the game assuming you'd want to stand up in a firefight, which is what's taking place (9 times out of 10) if you're taking damage.
I can see the logic. But I highly doubt the nine tenths of a second it takes to click the thumb stick rather than standing automaticly is going to make the difference between life or death. I'd also like to add... you shouldn't be sitting there crouched during a heated battle. [Edited on 10.21.2010 1:04 AM PDT]
Posted by: Gladiator888_ I have the same problem, been using toggle since CE when i was tired of holding the thumbstick to crouch, ive tested it and if hold crouch is on, you stay crouched if taking fire if your holding the crouch button, which is stupid as when im DMR sniping i crouch for faster firing and im always standing up and crouching. I get the similar thing when im sniping and get shot/un scope/scope/get shot. The WORST is when you unscope to turn to someone coming to you but they shoot you before you un scope so you actually scope back in then try to un scope again but they shoot you and you click it and scope back in again! SCOPE STUCK!
Oh God, I hate when this happens. OT: I'm also a toggle crouch user and find it annoying about the "auto-stand." I'll save this thread and help you keep it alive. I hope it's something that can be addressed.

Toggle crouchers have feelings too! Keep this thread alive if you use toggle crouch!
