Where is the story that so many of us are craving?

I've been playing D2 since year 1. I've enjoyed every minute of it, but the state of the game in seasonal content has been giving some disappointment. With Saint XIV, there were story missions in addition to the Sundial, but this season with the Rasputin content has fallen short for me. The endless bunker repair with no new idea of why we should be continuing the process has filled the game with much more tedium than was in it before. The Warmind DLC was some of my favourite content in the game, and it saddens me that things have fallen into Bounties: The Game. With thirty days left in the season, I'm hopeful for something else to come through, but the delivery of story has been lacking in this season. We've had no story mission unique to this season. Lets talk about pyramid ships. How long can we go as players with just hints of these things? The payoff for this is going to really determine where the state of the game goes. If things fall short with them, I think it will kill the game. They have been teased since the end of year 1, but we've been delivered nothing incredibly substantial. I guess what i'm trying to express is that Destiny's story is one of its most fascinating aspects. The gameplay has always been smooth (aside from a few bugs, but what game is without bugs), and it feels really good to play this game. The current fan base seems to me to have more interest in the story of the universe we're in and protecting than bringing back a relic from destiny 1 like trials of osiris. This game can be so much more if the focus can clarify itself. All of the lore is incredible, and it feels like we just don't know where to focus on. The devs need to take a risk here and push the story in order to truly take the focus back. Make this the game we imagined when Bungie split from Activision. I will keep playing this game, but it will become increasingly difficult if the story continues to be neglected.

  • Myelin games and mynameisbyf. There’s the story. You can’t have a game this size deliver a story in game. It’s too much and I understand. Devs work their asses off and deserve all the credit. I WISH the story was as it was planned earlier in destiny’s development. 5 minute cutscenes before and after each mission; that was the original plan. It didn’t happen. But those YouTube content creators do a great job. Go see Byf’s take on the complete story of the Thorn and TLW was insanely good. “Look at it. Jagged, like thorns” I get the chills hearing his voice

    • A story that progresses. So far it feels like bungie wrote a book then proceeded to rip out entire chapters. More cutscenes less text. A memorable soundtrack (like the aksis theme) And please STOP with these MCU style end credits cutscenes--> THAT GO NOWHERE <--- Example in Shadowkeep: "We are your salvation..." *cut to black* Spawn on the moon with 0 reaction to what we just witnessed.

      • I've definitely been thinking about this a lot recently. There's definitely a story there and it's happening so saying they're no story is a bit of a misnomer, but i think there are two big issues with how story works. First, it feels like the universe isn't taking any steps forward in major ways. The last few seasons have been Cabal messing with time (feels like more red war which should be done by now) vex attacking (feels like more D1; the threat hasn't changed) and more Cabal red war. The second problem is that the storytelling is too passive. Yes Almighty is coming. Yes we need to stop it. Do we feel like we're making any tangible progress though? It's like all build up with no catharsis for the foreseeable future. I think there are two big changes that need to happen to pull this thing into next level story telling. 1) more npc interaction and cutscenes. Does anyone actually care about any of the npc? Because there hasn't been a real relationship building aspect. I will grant that the St. 14 missions were refreshing. Build on that. Instead of a world filled with kiosks skinned as people, make the world feel living. 2) Give us a big bad to hate. The best content had that in common. Whether it was Crota or Savathun/Riven/Aldren or Skolas, or Oryx, the story is best with a tangible villain to hate (or weirdly love...Calus is such a champ). Anyway, my thoughts.

      • We are looking to improve the way the story of the game unfolds from season to season. You can read more about that in last week's TWAB. This season isn't over yet and well have more story content for you next season as well.

        • The story is in Joe staten's mind but bungie screwed him over so bad that he quit after they completely changed his years of hardwork before d1 launched. The current "bungie" I put quotes on it because bungie is not bungie anymore , can't write a proper story or create fun engaging content. All they know how to do is make people grind for 3 months straight so they can nerf us and buff pve so we have start all over again. It's basically ground hogs day but on a 3 month cycle.

        • I feel like destiny has been side quests the game for the past 4 years. Ever since the end of D1 I've wanted to fight the darkness and progress the main story. Everything since then has felt like a distraction. I don't care about ghaul, I don't care about pinopties, or the barrons or any other distractions. Where is the darkness and when will the war with it begin?

          • Maybe Activision had copyrights on the story, and when they left they took it all with, so now Bungie is in a payment plan to gain rights to specific cutscenes and things one by one, which is why we get this drip fed BS. Omg it all makes so much sense now.

            • At this point, most players would be okay with the Almighty/Darkness wiping us out and forcing us to start anew. The lore of Destiny is great. The way that the lore is portrayed in the game itself is terrible when the most interesting bits are tucked away in text boxes. The cutscenes are a good baby step in the right direction, but they barely scratch the surface of doing the lore justice.

            • They never listen to us. They act like they do, but don’t. They don’t understand that we don’t want this seasonal crap. All they want it money. I stopped playing around the beginning of last October. I’m just checking how it is. The state this game is in is really sad, compared to D1. If they listened they would realize that we don’t want to grind for hours, well at least most of us. They are ignorant, and they don’t even realize this. I miss D1, and they don’t even take advantage of that. I mean, not recycled content, but almost every player probably misses D1, and they should try to use that to make a nostalgic mission or something. Idk, but what they are doing now sucks.

            • What I don't understand is why do DLCs follow this STUPID arbitrary 5 mission structure? This happens everytime We beat the big threat in the 5 missions, then we find out in lore tabs how cool it was and how much potential it had For gods sake, shadowkeep tired it's damnedest to squeeze out a few more missions by making the strike and nightmare hunts part of the campaign. JUST GIVE US MORE THE 5 STORY MISSIONS! for your own sake at this point

Story content is the vital spark of the game. The rest are mechanics despite of being awesome mechanics (I love the jump-and-run-gunning experience even though I personally suck at jumping...). A lot of story is hidden in lore text of weapons/gear and a significant piece in news text. It's not bad at all and more like reading books in several pieces/at first glace unconnected story chapters. Very tessallated. I wished Bungie were able to get more of that stuff at least into video cut scenes if not story parts engaging players but I assume that's ruled out due to a lack of resources. Also I wished many of the already available parts would be utilized better. European Aerial Zone, Dungeon Maps etc which could be utilized for PvP (or new PvP modes? 3 teams against each other?) or additional heroic adventures stuff like that. Having said that I believe it's still great and I have just grabbed the Red War from Amanda in order to run through the story again. Having started only with Forsaken and not being a veteran D1 player I was anyway overwhelmed by the initial difficulty (starting with PL 1 that time) and couldn't be bothered running the stories (neither Osiris/Warmind/Forsaken) on any of my 2nd/3rd chars. Now running on my Titan again against Hive and Cabal and whosoever. And yes of course - it's easy-peasy now with my high level Titan with all the armour, exotics, running with Blast Furnace/1k Voices etcetera, but you know what? So entertaining. Seeing things and understanding so much more now the 2nd time I couldn't grasp when I started (who? what? where? puzzled...!) when I was struggling with new game mechanics and simply surviving. Content/story which now makes so much more sense. And helping me a lot to bridge the time of content drought. So if I'm allowed to make a recommendation. Pick a story from Amanda or Forsaken and play through the story again if you haven't. It's pure fun. Take care everybody.
