Why do melees whiff?

It’s annoying asf and gets me killed way too much. Anyone know what causes it?

  • Server lag, what displayed on your screen will not be what's displayed on someone else's screen as destiny to peer to peer. Further you lunge, the larger the chance you have to whiff. When this happens to me in game it is likely followed by a range of colourful words...

  • Was doing forges today and my shouldercharge as been nudging enemies instead of hitting them.

  • Because bungie hasn't still fixed one of the most complained about thing in this game. Melee registration.

    • Warlocks don’t. They literally teleport to you and instantly back in .1 seconds. I’ve died every time because I compensate for them staying on my face but no, they fly back to their original position of 10 meters away

          It's happening more and more in PvP lately. I can't remember the last time my melee actually connected. Shoulder charge has gotten worse, regular melee misses and the other player gets a free kill on me, etc. It's happening in PvE now too and that's never been an issue.

        • I call them Ghost hits. But yea really annoying, has to deal with the server tick and your lunge. If you are at spacial quadrants X,Y,Z when the lunge occurs it counts the target with in this preset area. If the server ticks are not in your favor the game will recognize the targets spacial quadrants at a different point & did not update in time. Well update "in time" for for it to count as a hit. Its more a hunter problem. Titans and locks experience it as well, but to a less degree.

          Due to it being the same engine as D1 the tick speed has been decreased worse than it was in D1

          Pretty sure since it's Reach's Engine, the Energy Sword whiff (Or Plastic Sword, an old but known glitch) is intrinsic to Destiny, as melee is using that level of lunge. Seems that Worthless bugged melee, resulting in far more plastic melees.

          • Thank god I’m not the only one dealing with this. It’s a problem with the hunter melee’s and bottom tree strikers knockout ability will look like it connects but will do no damage

              • Warlocks melee is the worst, occasionally when you melee someone it teleports you like 10-15 meters away.

                • Mass times acceleration is how to achieve optimal punching technique. Whiffing a punch means someone out there was faster and more trained. Go back to the sparring grounds and exchange punches until you get it right.

                    • Lag Melees use magnetism as an anti-latency measure but that doesn't make them immune to latency. You can also get -blam!- by geometry.

                        • Probably Because melee's are directional. And the lock on doesn't always compensate. Idk if youve ever noticed but you can do "precision" damage on melee attacks Can't remember if there's a difference in damage but the death animations change. Also, enemies with shields like taken phalanxes, can't be hit by a melee because they hold shields in their left, which is your right, the right that always does the melee attack
