The cabal and their similarities to the Imperium of man (Warhammer 40k)

Alright so I've been meaning to make this post for ages now but I just never got the motivation to do so, until today. Now I'm a very big fan of both Destiny and Warhammer, so naturally I'm gonna obsess over each and find any excuse to compare the two when I can Which is why I'd like to suggest the following... Bungie made the Cabal with the space marines in mind Now I know what you're thinking: ummm sky? Clearly they're inspired by ancient Roman stuff. You're totally right. But allow me to convince you that when in Rome, Bungie also looked up at the grim dark future of the 41st millenium for inspiration. Cabal legions = Adeptus astartes: we all know that the Cabal are comprised of multiple legions, each specializing in different combat and military fields. In 40k they have the same thing, multiple legions each fanatically loyal to their Imperium. Now I will admit, this isn't exactly the strongest argument I could have started out with considering I'm essentially pointing out that both factions operate similarly. However this leads into my second argument Primus = Primarch: the leader of a cabal legion is called a Primus as we all know, they command their troops into glorious battle across the galaxy. In 40k the leader of a legion is called a Primarch, and (if they're alive) lead their legion into even more GLORIOUS battle across the galaxy. Perhaps a coincidence in the naming process? Well... Psions = Psykers: this is where things really start to get similar. You see in 40k there are these special being's called Psykers who use their unique connection to the warp (magic realm, too long to explain here) to gain psychic abilities and powers. They're usually treated as inhuman freaks and as a result are kept on a tight leash. Now tell me... What are psions? A slave race to the Cabal that have the unique ability to create psionic power! VERY similar to Psykers minus the whole being enslaved by a different race thing Red legion = Ultramarines: allow me to read a quick description of the red legion. "An elite faction of the Cabal, deathly loyal to their commander. And rumor says that they've never known defeat!". Now if you know 40k you understand exactly what I'm implying here (especially with th current writing from GW). Basically Ultramarines are the poster boys of the imperium and renowned for their frankly universe breaking ability to always win Calus = the Emperor of man: the Emperor of man is the galaxies most powerful Psyker and is believed by his adoring people to be a literal god, He brought massive advancements to humanity during his rule and showed them a golden age that they've never been able to replicate since. Similarly Calus is seen by the Cabal as not only a god like figure but the greatest Emperor they've ever known, and under his rule brought unbelievable treasures and achievements to his people. Both where betrayed by their most beloved allies, both are now stuck in massive golden housings, and both are maybe sorta kinda dead? Now I'm sure I could go on and get into the nitty gritty but I think I'll stop here for now Just to clarify I'm not saying Bungie stole any ideas from Warhammer 40k, rather I'm saying that Bungie was inspired like the rest of us by the fantastical world that 40k explores. So anyway, tell me what you think? Maybe you can find even more similarities that even I didn't notice? Feel free to comment below

  • One thing I've always wondered about the Cabal, is when did they arrive in our system and why did they not attack Earth before we knew of their arrival?

    • I’m gonna say... this “imperium of man” or whatever was taken from the cabal rather than the cabal being inspired by whatever you said

      • Very good. One thing tho. . Psykers power are beyond cause and effect like the light. Pisons powers are bound by causality. Unlike powerful psykers.

And those teeny tiny beads. When you take a step back and look at the setup as a whole, it’s pretty funny to me. Their bodies must be fu-barred inside those suits

                      • Cabals weaponry is also similar to Space Marines, they do not fire bullets but rockets. I think Callus is actually closer to Fulgrim than The God Emperor. Their troops share the same armor colors (purple) and they both enjoy the pleasures of life and arts.

                        • If bungie had actually gone to the effort of basing things off wh40k, things would be a bit more grim, a bit more dark. We could only hope that they would ever dare to enlist the aid of the Warhammer authors. That would be a happy day. Cohesive story? Foresight and planning? Well-planned story arcs that span thousands of years? Yes. Please.

The Cabal are basically the Roman Empire. One of the reasons why Rome lasted as long as it did was because----once you were conquered----Rome set about turning you into Romans. So that you saw your prosperity linked to your allegiance to Rome. Like how the Psions went from conquered people, to fighting alongside the people who conquered them..

And the symbol for Iron Banner is just the tree of Gondor from LotR with the Stark dire wolves from GoT. Yeah, they've ripped off and borrowed a lot of their material.

                                        • In a recent video Luke Smith's boss Datto said he wishes Bungie did something like World of Warcraft (suprise suprise) where something or other took a sword and cut a planet in half and now the players played that area in the aftermath. Then Bungie released this season with the Almighty heading for Earth and all I could think is "man, they're gonna rip off this thing Datto was talking about and crash it on the EDZ and cut it in half aren't they."

                                              • I understand where you are coming from. However, I think the connections come from “ancient military” history. Elite armies (Jannisaaries), supreme emperor (Ceaser or any head military figure), phalanx (Spartans), mystics (a “warpriest”), standard army, the whole notion of “GLORY OR DEATH!”? History, my filibert. Really like the comparisons between 40k and D2!
