I was incredibly excited when they first showed Tommy's Matchbook, with Sweet Business being my favorite and most used gun I thought I could finally have a worthy alternative. Turns out that, while the idea behind this rifle is nice, its execution is simply bad and the vast majority of players have already forgot about it. Can't blame them, no one wants to use a gun that tries to kill you constatly.
However, I really like this weapon and I've been using it almost non-stop since the season came out, and I want to share my thoughts with everyone.
Before someone points it out, yes, I know there are many other exotics out there still waiting for buffs/fixes, but this is the seasonal exotic, if it won't get fixed now Bungie will simply forget it exists and it would be a shame.
Let's look at some numbers I personally gathered while testing this weapon.
While Ignition Trigger is active the weapon gets a ~98% buff to damage, and it will constatly chip away at your SHIELD every ~0.25sec. As soon as the shield is gone you stop taking damage, so it can't actually kill you. Since it only damages your shield, I tested if resilience would somehow increase the amount of time needed to reach critical health:
- at 2, 5 and 9 resilience the shield always gets consumed in ~4 seconds while hip firing
- at 2, 5 and 9 resilience the shield always gets consumed in ~2.5 seconds while aiming downsight
In other words, Tommy's will always eat between 25% (hip fire) and 40% (ads) of your shield per second while ignition trigger is active. The burn appears to be calculated in real time, so frantically switching between hip fire and ads has no apparent advantage.
While I know this is supposed to be a high risk high reward weapon, but the balance is completely off: almost 100% buff to damage is indeed quite impressive, but losing your entire shield between 2.5 and 4 seconds is just too punishing when you consider that you're most likely taking damage from something else while shooting, be it a boss, a guardian or a pack of mobs.
This brings us to another, just as important, problem: what is this weapon meant for? Is it a mower? Is it meant for dps? Tommy's seems to be lacking a direction and thus struggling in both fields.
Other primary exotics like Sweet Business, Monte Carlo, Riskrunner or Huckleberry are just as better (or even more) at clearing adds and they won't try to kill you for that, rather, they all offer some kind of reward for that.
For boss damage, other exotics primaries like Outbreack Perfected or Devil's Ruin offer better damage without any kind of downside.
This is, in my opinion, the core of the problem: Tommy's Matchbook is actually punishing you for using it. The risk/reward factor weights heavily in favor of the risk.
I still haven't completed the catalyst (working on it, should be done before next reset), but from what I saw online an increased health regenaration is simply not enough.
With all that being said, these are my suggestion to bring this weapon up in a usable state:
1) The most obvious one: Ignition Trigger MUST stagger overloaded champions. It's simply mindboggling that this exotic didn't come with a season effect attached to it.
2) Replace the Heat Sink perk: simply make the damage value of Heat Sink baseline. 25% of your shield per second is already a high price to pay for a 98% damage buff, and I firmly believe that hip fire should always be a choice and not something you force upon players.
3) Heat Sink now provides a 20% (maybe even 30%?) damage reduction while Ignition Trigger is active
4) "Heat of the Moment" (catalyst) refills your health and some ammo in the magazine on every kill
With this changes, I believe Tommy could find a place in this game as a sort of "tank weapon" that constatly forces you to play at low health but also offers you all the means to survive and keep going.
This concludes my talk on Tommy's Matchbook. I'd love to hear the community thoughts about this weapon and my suggestion, in order to make Bungie work on it before it's too late and ends up completely forgotten like many other exotics.

I'm upping this thread (hope it's not against the rules) because yesterday I finally completed Tommy's catalyst, and after a few hours of testing I wanted to share my final opinion on this weapon, if someone is still interested by chance. So, getting directly to the point: the catalyst is absolute trash, it might as well do nothing and it wouldn't make any difference. In fact, it only sheds more light on the flaws of this weapon. To be precise, the catalyst works exactly as I wrote before, giving you a boost to health regen while Ignition trigger is active. While it does act relatively fast (~0.5sec), you don't have to take any damage for it to proc, making it completely useles in most combat situations. As I said, testing the catalyst only made more clear that this gun was put out without any care for it to be viable whatsoever. Let me be more precise: 1) Heat of the moment does absolutely nothing until your shields are down, so if for any reason your intention is to play around it, you're better off shooting while ads (I'll explain why in the next point) making the Heat Sink perk useless 2) in optimal conditions, assuming you don't take ANY damage while shooting, as previously said your shields will be down between 2.5 and 4 seconds, meaning that you will only have between ~20 and ~36 ammo left in the magazine for heat of the moment before you have to recharge. By taking damage and adsing you can reach your health faster and have more ammo for the heal, but this brings us to the next point 3) even by playing around with minor/major resist mods, you're always 1-2 red bar and/or 1 yellow bar shots away from dying in any relevant content (ie: gambit, strikes, seraph tower etc) and the catalyst is simply not fast enough to save you since you have to avoid damage first My conclusion: not only this gun actively fights against its user, but its 2 perks + catalyst are also fighting against each other. It's a complete mess. I'm sorry, but after 2 weeks of using Tommy almost non-stop and desperately trying to figure out the right build for it, I give up: this gun sucks in almost every possible way. As much as I hate it, its only place in this game is the vault, and will be until Bungie decides to completely rework it (probably never).

The catalyst quests for Eriana's Wow and Symmetry was bad enough... the one for this weapon is -blam!-. Guess they got pissed that PvP players finished theirs in PvP and PvE players finished theirs in PvE... so naturally they had to step in and force people into the parts of the game they don't want to play... which means I won't bother with this weapon, like AT ALL.

1 ReplyThere's a titan build that uses tommy with the catalyst with actium war rig and the charged with light mod and the mod that heals you when you pick up an orb. Basically constant ammo, constant healing, and constant bonus damage.

Oryx says he wishes no one wanted to shoot things with a weapon that damages the shooter back in the day :) But yeah, I haven't even pulled Tommy's from the season pass.

2 RepliesIt's hard to judge your opinion if you haven't got the catalyst. Also, I was hoping to see how well it works in a healing rift with the new warlock exotic. Any ideas?

How many kills you got with Sweet Business?

1 ReplyThanks for this post... I too tried to use it everywhere on PvE snd found its just waay too risky. In Solar burn modifiers sure it melts adds and bosses but like you said, constantly taking damage from another source will most likely cause you to die... everytime. I ended up switching to Polaris Lance as it is a way better alternative during solar burn. This weapon is an absolute no-no for NF/L LS as no Barrier Mod (idk why) and again,it eats at your health ridiculously rendering any type of buff near-useless. For patrols sure why not... but even then its waay too risky when completing public events solo. The gun is good however I agree with you when you say it’s way too risky, and I think another type of debuff such as temp slower speed, or slower cooldown on abilities whilst firing may be a better solution.

Actually, really good suggestions here. This would make it a much better gun, but not broken

2 RepliesWelp, almost a day and not even one comment. I guess no one cares about this weapon or I simply suck at starting topics. :<
