I did play D1. I don't see what's being done here as a repeat of how things used to be.
Back in D1 they introduced Etheric Light, a consumable that would bring weapons/armor forward to its new power level, so yes this is pretty much a repeat of their "we're leaving old gear behind, grind this new gear" bs .. only difference is the expiration date is way longer, but in the end once a weapon isn't viable anymore even if you like the perks (or perks that were only found on that weapon at that time.. like Vorpal for example) or the aesthetic design you loved you're told to -blam!- off and use their new shiny guns they'll like to pat themselves on the back for / act like they made amazing designs It's a shitty change and they still didn't give us transmog options for everything in the game, at least that shit would let us make our gear look how we want it instead of the only ornaments allowed on armor being from eververse or armor specific (IB, crucible, strikes armor, etc) ornaments that can't be applied elsewhere (but we could previously, bungie just fixed that "bug" that let us for example put iron banner ornaments on any armor 2.0 gear.. because bungo doesn't like us to look how we want when we want or play how we want)

 • It's similar I will admit. But the fact that they extend the expiration date and the fact that said weapons will still be relevant outside "core" activities I think makes them different compared to D1's etheric light situation.
