Okay real talk, how did Bungie let such a massive bug as account-wide item deletion go live?

Like, seriously. Does Bungie just not have internal accounts and servers to test updates on or something? It feels like every few updates we get some new game-braking bug and it just baffles me as to how it keeps happening. Not too long ago we had entire PvP lobbies go invisible, the Izanagi's quest was broken for months, and now player's entire supply of currencies were deleted (and later returned after a day of scrambling to fix the issue)? I'll at least give Bungie props for the fairly quick turnaround and fix to the bug. But honestly, it should have been a non-issue. There's a base level of quality and care that should go into game content and updates that are made public, you aren't Bethesda Bungie and you don't want to be. Note: To my knowledge this issue did not affect my account in any way, but that doesn't mean I'm willing to ignore an issue that affected a large number of players in an almost uniquely devastating way.

And the worst thing about all this, is some of the player base do the spin for them.

Bungie dev1: its ready. Bungie dev2: ok great Bungie dev1: yep. pushin the button. Bungie dev2: did you test it? Bungie dev1: nope. no need, quick update. Bungie dev2 : aight lets head out. I wanna get out of here before DMG comes in to tell us how much the community says we suck at our jobs. Bungie dev1: word

  • Bungie not testing their product is not surprising anymore with how far they’ve fallen People defending them is shocking though. Why anybody would be happy with such a badly looked after product is beyond me

  • Working in software, it’s understood that it’s not a matter of if a bug of this type will happen, but when. Sure, QA probably should have caught it — none of us are qualified to say from our armchair. But Bungie quickly applied a tourniquet to limit the damage and I’ve no doubt they pulled out all the stops to address it as quickly as possible. I can’t realistically ask for anything more given the nature of the fix. It’s sucked, sure, but they handled it professionally. They did good in my book, all things considered.

      • I give Bungie my fair share of grief, but code breaks. I write code, I'm very careful, but mistakes happen. I've never brought down a game lol, but could have.

In development, a bug like that can sometimes occur only when production goes live. Also, remember that Bungie's test team is leagues smaller than the thousands of players who were logging on. So maybe they didn't notice because it didn't happen on their end. Remember it's not just "oh click this button and all bugs are fixed!" This is programming people, it's basically rocket science, so when a bug gets released chill the heck out. - A Developer

How about actually working on the game? No, we ain't got time for that since its a charity company now.

            • How does discussing about it help anyone? It was some bug and was fixed later on. Whining about it won't change anything.

              • Bungie has proven time and time over they dont test ANYTHING they implement. They release broken guns, exotics, mods. Each "fix" does nothing. It might "fix" one issue but creates 5 more. D2 has became a beta test simulator

              • For a AAA studio it’s laughable. It’s like amateur hour to me. Wait for trials to drop and see what breaks with that.

              • Better question, why aren't saves local, like a normal game. So we can make backups, cloud saves, and best of all, Bungie can't alter our saves in any way. Always online was a mistake for consoles, it was a mistake for games.

Try looking for the Pigeon and the Phoenix lore if you collected it, it's back to ???????

                  • It's so easy to look at an incident like the patch, as something that would be caught in their internal testing ground and that there's no excuse.... When you think of the huge amount of items there are in the game and that many of them are tagged with codes that makes them unique to every player. Internal accounts are likely to have artificial economy, where they just increase the number of materials. Inserting code that looks for specific tags of obsolete stuff to remove, might do what happened, if someone forgot that one of the tags tie to specific material items you earned as drops. It's just speculation from my side, but scenarios like this is to be "expected" in a huge database when trying to make effective code to automate maintenance. By saying that, it seems to be a enormous task to remove the F'ing secondary stove from the 2 characters. The first picked up was removed, but it seems that the one picked up on alts is tagged differently. Kinda shows what happens when seemingly identical items isnt really identical ;)

                    • Yes. Things break and I get that but at this point over the past year or so every single time an update is released something major breaks to the point of disabling exotics or in this case losing stuff. They fixed it quickly and that is great but stuff like this SHOULD NOT happen every time and update comes out

They didn’t replace my 10k Baryon boroughs or full stack of the moon fragment things. Funny how that happened to one of the most highly stocked mats 🧐
