Bullet Magnetism - Should it be toned down a bit?

Destiny 2 has a lot of bullet magnetism. So much in fact that pretty much anyone can be good at the game. At least that's how I see it. This has always bothered me. Why am I being rewarded for aiming poorly? Some bullet magnetism is needed of course in a fast paced FPS game, but I think Bungie made the aiming in Destiny 2 a bit too forgiving. Stuff like this makes the game very easy and blurs the line of skill gap. You don't need to master your aim when the game does it for you. In the linked video I test various weapons from different ranges to show how forgiving the aiming is. Keep in mind that all these clips are done without having any Targeting Mods to keep every weapons bullet magnetism at their normal state. The aim assist stat on the weapons used for testing had Aim Assist from 34-92. Spare Rations being the highest and Gunnora's Axe the lowest. Also as a bonus, at the end of the video I quickly show how the flinch works in this game. TL:DW? Every time you take a shot your reticle gravitates towards the enemys head. Ever wonder how someone shot you in the head when you were flinching them a ton? The flinch helps them to hit that shot. TL:DR? Aiming in Destiny 2 is too forgiving and should be adjusted to raise the skill gap. You should not be rewarded for missing your shots. But that's just my opinion and I would like to hear yours. Thanks! This feedback is directly made for the console ports of Destiny 2. I'm not sure how this works on PC. EDIT: Ok I am done with this topic. After the gathered feedback on this subject I've come to a conclusion that majority of the community wants the game to stay as the easy, casual experience as we've all learned to love it. Although it was interesting to see peoples thought on it. I hope this thread helped some of you see how the shooting mechanisms work in this game. Whether you agree with me or not, thanks for reading/discussing.

  • I wish posts like these didn't get downvote bombed so a conversation on this could actually be had, it feels like these posts get botted into obscurity.

  • Yes 100%. The ridiculously forgiving hitboxes and aim assist is one of my biggest gripes in the game when it comes to skillgap. Coming from someone with almost 30,000 hand cannon kills, no one has a “good primary shot” in this game. You can be brand new to mouse and keyboard and still hit every hand cannon flick shot because the magnetism is absurd.

    - Tone down bullet mag./aim assist(I know many PC players want it gone entirely for MnK) and incoming flinch when using primaries(especially with how you'll get flinched on target if you're off) - Increase stability/reduce recoil - Get rid of or extremely minimize bloom These are the changes I'd ideally make to the weapon system. It'd probably make many guns feel less different from each other, but I'd wager the main reason such high bullet mag./large hitboxes(especially on the head) exists is to allow for the current levels of recoil to exist without requiring every player to carefully and meticulously learn the exact recoil pattern for every weapon(and there are hundreds) to be usable. It probably won't happen in this game, but I think it'd be possible in the sequel or another future Bungie franchise entirely.

    • I'd love to see this, but I doubt it even has a chance of being implemented. Those 93 aim assist spare rations spammers have to feel good about themselves.

WHAT?! You can't do that do Destiny! How is it supposed to sell its feel-good illusion of being a skill-based FPS without its aim assist?! Then again, you seem to be coming at this from a perspective where you want the game to be a skill-based competitive shooter, and I want this game to be an PvE action RPG looter shooter. So agree to disagree, I guess! If only it wasn't so fundamentally flawed that we wouldn't have to debate what it should be in the first place!

        • 1. No it shouldn’t. 2. Because controllers are very imprecise. 3. Lag is an issue with p2p networking.

Theres still people that are Neo that litteraly make me think how in gods name did they do that, but remember some of us arent in their 20s with good health.

          • It's difficult to wholly agree on this because if bullet magnetism reduced, dodge abilities would reign the crucible.

            • Destiny pretends to be a good shooter. In reality it features some of the heaviest aim assist and bullet magnatism in modern AAA. It isn't good, it's made to feel slick. In reality it's painfully bad AI, wonky movements and a reticle that easily tracks it all. Throw in questionable hit boxes and you got yourself one terrible FPS. Game really should have been a TPS with a full blown melee/light combat system. Maybe we could have got the RPG we wanted without the shallow FPS holding it back.

              • Controllers are NOT precision instruments. Without a solid level of forgiveness, a lot of players wouldn't be able to function as well in PvP. Sounds like pretty horrible game design to alienate a big portion of the PvP playerbase just so you can "raise the skill gap". Make a slider to adjust weapon forgiveness. Everyone's happy.

                • No. It is also there to compensate for connection delays and lags so you can actually hit what you're aiming at unlike in other games e.g. battlefield.

                  • Way down. All it does is reduce skill gap between good and bad players

                    • Bullet magnetism needs to be scrapped completely and aim assist needs toning down.. 90/100 aim assist shouldn't be a thing. Imo something like 15/100 should be absolute maximum

Truth. I once stood at the LZ on Titan next to Sloane. Aimed my GL up in the sky, fired, and a Dreg below died.

                        • Absolutely. All it does is create a spam fest where you don’t aim you just point in the general direction and spam the trigger. That’s destiny, spam, spam special weapons, spam heavy, spam abilities and supers, spam high aim assist primaries.

There are too many things that influence why you have to have it. All you have to do is: Get rid of bloom Get dedicated servers and stop P2P connections Get rid of RNG bullets, RNG shotgun/fusion spread, shooting from the air RNG, etc Get rid of poor hit registration Get rid of crappy recoil Buff kinetic weapon damage to limit energy weapon usage The down side is the TTK will go up to the point that this game is CoD and I don't think that anyone wants that. So no its not going to happen.

                            • Depends on what weapons on console the spare rations is insane because of bullet magnetism because of how much aim assist it has it literally take almost no skill to use and stuff like scouts I think should be toned down a bit especially the jade it is insane but stuff like the duke 44 doesn’t it’s hard enough to use that weapon if someone genuinely kills me with it I’m impressed but I think spare rations is slowly going into the category of annoying to play against not as bad as fusions but spare rations you don’t need to be accurate to use it

                              • On PC, it should be turned down on single shot weapons, such as snipers, shotguns, hand cannons.
