Bad connections shouldnt be an advantage in pvp

I know that nothing can be done about how terrible other players connections are but my god. Teleporting enemies and poor hit registration don't make for fun pvp. Makes me want to lower my connection speed so I can have the same feeling...too bad network manipulation is reportable...

  • I have fiber 10GBe in my intranet and 500 Mbs internet. When I played PvP I would still see lagging players and players running into walls and a second later disappearing only to reappear somewhere else shooting at me. Got tired of it and no longer play PvP. One should not have to install Biomimetic Gel Packs and a Positronic matrix just to compensate for garbage netcode and peer-to-peer across the Atlantic... This issue is not an issue in any other game I play online...

    • I can't tell you how many times I've put two bursts from a blast furnace into someone and not see their health drop at all. Of course the shots against me register though.

Last night I landed 5 head shots into a target that was jittering all over the place. After he killed me, he does 2 more seconds of random location quivering, then dies afterwards >_< Nothing will change until Bungie sets a maximum latency policy to participate in crucible.

        • You do realise network packets for multiplayer data aren't very big, which is why you only need small down/up bandwidth to play, so a 200/20 connection isn't going to have any advantage over a 100/10 connection, etc. The problem is the latency of a player's connection and whilst dedicated servers are better than P2P in this regard, latency can still affect the experience on dedicated servers.

          • There is something that can be done.. don't matchmake them into my matches so maybe keeping them closer to home with MM OR completely ban them from pvp activities. Pretty simple.

          • If you were to cap your device's bandwidth through your router to say 3mbps down/1mbps up is probably not what Bungie considers "network manipulation". Those are the bare minimum specs for playing most games online. I imagine network manipulation is using software like [REDACTED] to get IP addresses of other players to drop them from your lobbies. Spamming junk packets/traffic, etc.

            • Chances are, your opponents don't actually have bad internet, they're deliberately engaging in network manipulation to lag you out, due to the nature of 'hybrid peer-to-peer' exposing your IP address to everyone in the match: https://www.pcgamer.com/the-strange-science-of-destiny-2s-uniquely-complicated-netcode/

              • Funny thing? It happens more with fireteams. Check to see if someone is teamed up in a group. More than half the time they're in a fireteam. My theory still holds true: fireteams have a better connection during a match than a solo player.

                • well if we had dedicated servers it would be fine. Destiny has worse netcode than Call of duty 2 it feels.

                • Trust me, bad connection isn’t a boon. It leads to a lot of situations where you shoot someone and nothing happens then you drop dead for unknown reasons. I’ve been there. 🤣🤷🏻‍♂️

                • Having played all but 4 months of d1 with a dog shit connection I can say it’s not one. If your just lagging it’s the most frustrating thing I’d ever experienced. I would just stop playing after the first couple months of destiny even though I badly wanted to play, having half your shots just disappear felt like a headache more then an advantage. Can’t speak for d2 but I’d imagine it’s very similar since the complaints remain exactly the same aside from the fact there’s just cheaters blatantly cheating now.

                • Yeah there can. There should be a minimum 30 download 7 up to play. If you cant manage that, you dont get to play. If it drops below catch the boot. I meam at the very least the game will no joke let you play at 10 mb down and thats bullshit. But bungie doesnt care.

                      • Strangely enough, I think I lag more with a wired connection than wireless, only in Destiny... I thought my new Xbox wouldn't have my stupid 2 hr guaranteed weasel issue, but boy was I wrong.

                        • They arent. When you see someone lagging it is just as bad for them. I had a game the other day where my connection was really bad for some reason. Im always able to play with everyone else in my house on the wifi and while streaming Netflix but for these two games I was randomly on a one bar and it was very noticeable. No one was teleporting but bullets were taking several seconds to do damage if dealing any at all. Guy adds me mid game, messages me and says Im teleporting all over, says to restart my internet. So it was affecting both of us.

                          • Ran into an all Chinese team (or so their name lettering would have me believe) and it was -blam!-ing awful. One dude was running around with LoWs and teleporting everywhere, you couldn’t hit him, but boy could he hit you. I think he ended up with like 26 kills and a 3 efficiency. Such bs. Idk how your connection is that bad but you can still kill people. When my connection is bad I can’t hit anything.

                            • I'm starting to notice that people with "cross save" on their emblems, seem to have bad hit reg and do more damage. Shotgun and punch should kill any guardian, but no, they turn around and one jab and I'm gone. Its BS.
