Bungie, you've talked quite a bit about your need to keep this game challenging. The problem in the world of videogames is, has been, and always will be that challenge is EXTREMELY relative to the player. I understand that half the community is always asking for challenge to be scaled back while the other half says everything is too easy. Finding balance is difficult.
I think Destiny 2 has done some great things in regards to finding balance here. The idea of heroic raids with additional mechanics was a good one. I also think that providing titles and triumphs that are purely for bragging rights was a great idea. It gave people who wanted to really push themselves a reason to do so but it also didn't leave less skilled players without access to powerful gear. Conversely, Luna's Howl and Not Forgotten shouldn't have been tied to performance because giving the best gear to the most skilled players only increased the skill gap and made PVP even less fun for less skilled players.
Somewhere along the line we lost the ability for lower skilled players to enjoy the game as much. I think Reckoning and Gambit Prime are the poster child for how to NOT handle challenge. By your own statements, you created an activity that centered around challenging a single OP ability (well of dawn) so the difficulty was ratcheted up to a level where Well of Dawn was a requirement for the activity and it became a frustration for all. It was not fun, it was frustrating, and only the more skilled players assembled sets of armor for gambit prime. As a result, the masses of people without gambit prime armor sets avoid gambit prime and the mode dies unnecessarily.
In response to these balance issues, the most obvious answer is this: make all the best gear be obtainable by players of every skill level. Sure some gear could still be rewarded to only the most skilled, but this should be gear that fills niche roles, perhaps for those type players, not gear that obviously makes the skilled players better, increasing the skill gap and chasing away the lesser skilled players.
Furthermore, your quest to nerf anything considered overpowered is not only pointless (there's always a cheese in this game) but it's counterproductive. If there's no powerful gear to obtain, then there's little reason to play the activities. If there is powerful gear, but it's inevitably going to be nerfed, then it's also very hard to bother to pursue it.
But again, why bother to quash all this gear anyway? Lets go back to the roots of what made Destiny, and before that, Halo, great and that is feeling powerful. If you're a super soldier, decimating all that is in your way it is way more fun than if you're a puny weakling getting stomped off a cliff every 5 seconds. Players should be able to play through the game for the fun of feeling overpowered if that's what they want. Many, many people play this game for fun and frankly don't need it to be super challenging. Even with almost no challenge, there's so much stuff to collect and do in this game that it still takes quite a while to do. Sometimes the challenge level just makes it take way longer for less skilled players and makes it less fun.
So here I am today, looking at this game and the gear that's available for me to chase, and almost none of it is good, or even better than what I have. Why should I chase an exotic fusion rifle that's worse than my erentil or a machine gun that's worse than my hammerhead or 21% delirium? Whisper's quest was cool but the weapon was so cool that EVERYONE had to do it. Zero Hour was the same way and even though the catalyst was a huge pain, I did it gladly because the weapon was so good. Good gear makes even long events worthwhile and there hasn't been any good gear in a long time because of this pointless quest to end powerful gear. And, of course, having my precious Whisper and Sleeper nerfed into uselessness feels like a complete betrayal of the time it took to earn them. It really cuts the legs out from under my desire to keep playing this game.
Now a disclaimer, yes PVP needs balance for sure. So how you do that is difficult but I would think you should be able to tune weapons differently for PVP than for PVE and if you can't do that then you should make that a major focus. OP weapons ruin PVP so nothing I said should be taken out of that context.
So, long story short. Please end your quest to quash anything overpowered or fun in this game. Some people love stomping easy enemies with friends and earning gear for it. Some people want to experience this game without the frustration. Some people want to earn super crazy gear and enjoy it. You said pretty much that in the trailers for Forsaken so I don't know why we've backed away from it so much now. Offer rewards for challenging events or special quests, but don't do it at the expense of everyone else who wants to enjoy your game. Give the most skilled players cool titles or really neat ornaments. Give them triumphs and emblems and shaders and sparrows. Give everyone the weapons, and armor that help them be powerful. But you have to offer good gear to make people keep playing. Chasing gear, titles, and cosmetics is the whole point of this game is it not? Without good gear, what are we pursuing?
(also, I'm not a total noob, you can pull my KD ratios off Destiny tracker if you want. This isn't just a rant from a guy who doesn't want to get good. I'm also a father, an engineer, and a busy man, and sometimes I just want to chill and have fun.)

1 ReplyI couldn’t disagree more, and that’s coming from someone who also sucks at PvP. Lunas Howl was something for me, a pvp meh, to chase over the course of seasons. Plural. But I did it (before the glory climb was so easy tyvm). I almost have my NF out of sheer persistence. That’s what a game should be. It should be work, and sweat, and tears, and when you finally have the thing you’ve been chasing it should feel good. I am a hobbyist at this game. I play for several hours a day, I don’t raid, and sometimes I’ll think about gambit but really would rather not. It’s okay if I don’t have access to all the good weapons. And it’s okay if I don’t have all the armor. It shouldn’t be given to everyone! Reserve that sweet looking raid armor from GoS for those who grind for it. I’ll sit over here with my completed bad juju catalyst because that’s what I chose to spend my time on. Yeah, I don’t like getting mapped by Erentil in crucible but that’s what’s OP right now. In six months it’ll be something else. Nerfs happen, buffs happen, and activities are added and removed all the time. That’s what playing an MMO is about. But life isn’t fair, and those that spend the most time in this game should be able to get loot others don’t have. Lunas and NF *should* be reserved for those people who work hard for it. Making things available to everyone makes it worthless. Idk, but I don’t think your argument is completely valid.
