It gives you a recommended light level for activities, yet even when I exceed this recommendation by a large margins I still come up against stupidly over powered NORMAL enemies that 1 shot kill me. #boring

To keep players from facerolling the game. RPGs do it all the time.

1 ReplyRecommended level before playing. You don’t get stronger than the activity ever.
-
1 ReplyTo lock you out of content so you have to grind to play it. Adds artificial “gameplay”.

4 RepliesLight level is relatively pointless. There are no pros to being above recommend. Only cons for being below. If you want your power to be meaningful then I recommend playing something like Borderlands. There are very few times where I actually feel powerful in Destiny

1 ReplyIt's just a number, ran my 1000 Titan through Pit of Heresy and Acolytes can throw a solar grenade and I'm instantly in the red, 90% health gone, just like when I was 900. No difference
It gives you a recommended light level for activities, yet even when I exceed this recommendation by a large margins I still come up against stupidly over powered NORMAL enemies that 1 shot kill me. #boring
You get a bonus for over leveling something up to 50. It’s called delta scaling. If you took little damage and one hit every enemy, that would be boring. The game needs more difficult activities.
-
4 RepliesDestiny power engagements work around something called a "power delta". Basically, if you are too low power for an activity, all enemies are immune. As you get closer to the recommended light level, you do more damage and take less damage (influenced by the light levels of your weapons and armor respectively). When you match the light level of an activity, this is what the game recommends for a "fair fight", where you and the enemy are on "equal footing". Past that, you will continue to do more damage and take less damage from the enemy, but only until 20 levels above the recommended light level. At that point, the game caps your damage dealt and received so that you cannot go into a 750 activity and kill a boss by shooting his toe with a sidearm. --- Also, certain activities have enemies that are coded to do more damage to you, even at the same recommended level as enemies elsewhere. For example, enemies on patrol are by far the weakest enemies at 750 power, and are low threats. Enemies in the Black Armory forges, even though they are also 750, hit much harder, because the game takes into account the difficulty of the activity and artificially increases enemy lethality. The same delta scaling exists, but enemies are shifted higher on the chart to retain difficulty

There is none.

It's called bad game design. Bungie is good at it.

To see who has the biggest penis in the Destiny community.

The recommended light level is to gate people out of content until they over play enough to be high enough to play the content. The enemies level up with us so we don't become "immune" to them. Even though they can be strong enough to be immune to us. It's Bungie's way to make it so nothing is "boring" when a high level player brings in a new friend, since some people are still jerk enough to convince a friend to buy put time and/or money into this game.

There really isn't one since the power fantasy in Destiny is currently non-existent. If you are below recommended you do less damage and take more, but if you are above it you gain nothing. That's why my personal grind for this game slowed substantially after hitting 980 light. I gain no benefit from any light beyond 980 which is honestly pretty lame.
-
If you want a sensible answer - it's the base level for the majority of encounters within that activity... which will determine how much damage you will do/receive based upon your own level... there is a cap in either direction; you will receive no added benefit in being 50pl higher, and enemies will become immune if you're 100pl lower! It won't always translate exactly, as some activities are designed to have tougher enemies than other activities... e.g. an 850 nightfall will be tougher than an 850 patrol, even if your 850 yourself! In my opinion any bonuses over recommendation is negligible, but you will see a big difference in the other direction!

3 RepliesTruth. My guardian feels weak again.

1 ReplyLL essentially functions as a “key” to unlocking content...which is drastic in my opinion, BUT even more screwed incorrectly once you pass the suggested level. I know they don’t want you to be able to one-shot everything, BUT if I grinded for a ton of LL, I should be able to melt some tough stuff solo.
-
5 RepliesI never understood this PL or LL crap. Some say its because it scales to your PL, so that activities are not a cake walk. I have to do the special strike to get Thorn. I see it requires 750 PL. I'm at 970 and it was crushing me trying to do it solo. I got frustrated and quit til I can get a FT together to help.

The point is to let you know that you are playing a stupid game. Fun,but stupid.
-
Instead of recommended it should say "Base Light Level" Below that you are at a disadvantage, above it you are normalized.
-
You can only be 50 power higher than mobs giving a 0.2% damage advantage per power level(10% max, after that nothing changes. Players are obsessed with power thinking Destiny is an actual RPG it's not, power gives acces to higher activities and a small bonus with a cap(10% damage) when you exceed it. In short power=acces to higher activities nothing more. Small note: damage numbers are somewhat disconnected from actual damage, as many mobs scale to your level hence numbers go up % damage stays the same.
-
Recommended light level is another way of telling you that this is the key to have access to play this content It’s an access key nothing more there nothing powerful about us

1 ReplyWhat’s the points of the Democrats having 20 debates when they are just ruining their chance of beating trump?

You’re getting killed by normal enemies when you’re above the power recommendation? You must be really bad. That doesn’t happen to most people.

Constant fear of death should be exciting not boring.
