Mathematics is a representation of how to calculate phenomena that already exist. So in my opinion, we invented mathematics the same way we invented language. Mathematics is essentially a language that we use to describe what we observe. We didn’t invent a rose, but we invented the name for it. We didn’t invent the concept of having : apples, adding 3 more apples, and having 6 apples, but we invented the way to describe it.

We didn't create mathematics, we discovered it.

4 RepliesMath doesn’t exist. It’s a language we invented to describe the universe. For example there’s no such thing as the number 3 in nature. “Three” is just a human concept we created to categorize objects in the real world. That categorization only exists in our mind - not in nature. Math is a useful tool we use to approximate the regularity that appears in nature.

Well, if math is the language of science, then no. We just learned to speak it.

Math is the language with which God wrote the universe.

It’s a concept used by us to understand things so yes we invented it. Other races (if they do exist) might use other means of understanding the things that we do with math.

I'm with ZARDOZ on it's a language. A language we use to interrogate nature and universe.

1 ReplyYes. We didn’t invent the universe, but we invented the language we use to describe it.

Discover. Discover. Discover!!!!! Our entire universe is rooted in math.

I guess the way I'd put it is that we discovered that, say, all the angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees, by inventing a technique to prove it. The methods we call math are invented, and what is revealed through their application is discovered. Or something.

Discover.

Edited by BlakToe: 1/13/2020 8:02:05 PMMath isnt real. Its a pretend system we invented to help quantify whats around us. Edit: Math is at its core, the basis of what we assign a value to. The problem with that, is the us assigning value part. For example. 2 + 2 = 4 When in reality, 2 doesnt exist. The only numbers that really "exist" are 1 and 0. Everything else is a partition of perception.

3 RepliesAs much as I dislike 'high' math, I'd say discovered. Everything that seems to be able to be proven is done by mathematical formulas, and they all seem to work, so there had to be some connection to it's discovery and it being there in everything that it has been able to decode.
