Banned for Internet?

I received an error message upon logging into Destiny 2 this evening stating that “This account has a consistently unstable internet connection that is affecting other players. If this continues, this account may be restricted from matchmaking with other players.” I have a photo of the message but I’m not sure how to upload it here or if I even can. I live in a rural area in the US and pay for the best internet available to me, which is unfortunately still broadband (but hey, that beats HughesNet). My question is this: how is it possibly my fault or responsibility that I have poor connection occasionally (I am very rarely kicked from matches), when it’s common knowledge that Destiny/Bungie has some of the worst connection issues around? There are so many different error code animals that you could fill a zoo! Has anyone else had this message before and if so, did anything come of it? I tried to find a way to contact Bungie directly but their customer service is about as awful as their servers and I couldn’t find a direct line to them. Thanks for the feedback!

Just to be sure it is not at the heart of your problem, seeing as you mention the rural situation and how it impacts your options: The game specs call for Broadband Internet bandwidth. Keep in mind another aspect, latency/loss, plays a major role as well--but there is not a quantifiable spec listed for that. But they DO specifiy a metric for your bandwidth plan, and that is the Broadband standard. Not High Speed Internet, but Broadband. The words were chosen specifically for a reason...there are two different bandwidth standards: High Speed is basically anything faster than dialup (not exact wording, but in essence what it generally means in the scope of residential internet). Broadband is a considerably higher standard... 25x3mbps (revised in 2014 from the previous 4x1 standard). Satellite upload speeds typically start at 80kbps, and DSL at 128kbps. Cable typically starts their upload speeds at 1mbps. Of those 3 options, Cable is the only one with the best assurance of meeting the actual minimum bandwidth requirements for this game... but those are not actually guaranteed minimum speeds, just what is typically seen to be the normal minimum. DSL/Satellite can still drop as low as 24kbps if things are really hosed up, and Cable can dip down close to dialup as well in an extreme FUBAR state. As noted in the support documents, the game has always required a minimum of 1mbps bandwidth in both directions. They have recently implemented some new balancing tactics that restricts data flow to just under that, but it still needs at absolute bare minimum a sustained transfer rate of about 800kbps. Not what the lighter high speed dsl and satellite plans may offer, where it may bounce around anywhere from 128kbps up to 1.5mbps upload bandwidth--you need a sustained rate right near 800kbps. If it is regularly dipping down under even just 768kbps (as MANY lighter DSL plans are notorious for doing), you are at risk for packets being delayed just enough to cause noticeable and traceable stability issues. If enough players spot the signs and report you for poor connectivity, you will get investigated and risk the whole restriction/suspension/ban process. So first and foremost, you need a plan that has the proper bandwidth available... without fail, sustained throughput of at LEAST 800kbps BOTH up and down. And that is ONLY if they keep the current net limiters active. If they lift the restrictions, we go back to the full 1mbps as noted in their documentation. After that, your ISP needs to be assigning you routing/peering arrangements that have no packet loss and consistently good latency--too much jitter/loss will cause stability issues. We have seen reports of testing where the loss and/or packet delays have fallen within even just 2-3%--not packet loss mind you... packets still arrived but were late so they were out of order. This game is NOT tolerant of errors like that. If you want to run speed tests and such, make sure you are at least testing to the Seattle area. This will put you in Bungie's "backyard", so will give you a rough idea for at least the two persistent connections you must maintain to their servers. Won't account for the cloud service connections, nor the player-direct links, but at least you can sort of test what it may be like getting to Bungie's servers.

  • This is a warning for you check your connection and try to get it off a sufficient standard to play PVP. If however, you are unable to repair or upgrade your connection you must stay out of PVP. You have been reported by other players lagging this has had an impact on those players. Bungie has checked and found they were correct. Suspensions are 30-60mins 1st Restriction is 2 weeks 2nd Restriction is 2 months 3rd Restriction is permanent exclusion from PVP activities. Bans are permanent exclusion from the whole game If you would like some advice I am no expert on these matters but we do have some very tech-savvy people who are. To enable those people to help you troubleshoot could you provide information to the questions below and do a test at the link provided and type your results in with your reply. Test Here The result are important for helping you so please give the results. Are you getting errors? How many gaming platforms use your router/modem? How many people and devices are using your connection? Are you using a wired or wireless connection? Do you use other things like chat, Spotify, while playing games etc?

  • Most of those error codes are related to your network connection. They warned you that your connection is affecting other players and their experience with the game. It doesn’t matter if you intended to or not. They are warning you to get that situation sorted out with your ISP or you will be held accountable for it. If your ISP can’t make it better, then you shouldn’t play PvP.

If you continue to play with suboptimal connections, you will be restricted for two months. And if after that you still continue to play with suboptimal connections, you WILL be permanently banned from PvP activities

  • Here are my suggestions, I am guessing you are using WiFi since that is where most people have issues. First, if possible, use hard wire but that may not resolve your problem, it did not for me because my packet loss and latency issues kept knocking out my modem. I had replaced my old modem with the latest and greatest tech and my problems actually got worse. The problem you may be experiencing may be related to what bandwidth your WiFi is set. There is 20, 40 and 80 mHz. Most new modems will come set to 80 mHz which allows for fantastic speeds but will also have very high latency issues and lost packets. Games do not like that. Go in and change your WiFi to 20 mHz and your problems should go away, at least mine did. If that does not resolve your problem try changing the channel in which your WiFi is set because other electronics may be interfering with it. Most modems come set to auto. There are software programs that will allow you to monitor your WiFi channels for noise levels from a WiFi enabled laptop or computer. There are many tutorials online if you need help. Hope this helps, Guardian.
