For the sake of argument let's assume that in lore enemies don't literally explode into Glimmer when killed and the only way to obtain Glimmer is to mine it or take it from someone else who mined it. If guardians actually had as much glimmer as we do in-game they would instantly have destroyed the City's economy with hyperinflation. And that's ignoring the other flaws with using Glimmer as a currency but that's another conversation.
Are Guardians payed by the Vanguard like soldiers? Does the Consensus allot a military budget to the Vanguard with which to pay them? I've never heard Zavala complain about military spending but someone has to be paying for this whole operation. Ikora definitely didn't get her Vex Gate built through volunteer labor and GoFundMe.

One word LOOT

Glimmer is programmable currency/ material. Bounties are offered by vendors, we complete bounties and challenges and are rewarded glimmer and guns, so yes whether its crucible, gambit or strikes gaurdians are getting payed. The chest at the end of strikes and what not is supposed to be the bosses spoils that were claiming so gaurdians are participate in war looting technically as well. Also end match rewards for gambit / crucible come directly from drifter/ shaxx respectively(my theory is we get a cut of the best placed on us un the crucible since crucible games are televised like sports matches in the destiny universe) and the drifter is parting with I'll gotten gains in exchange for us doing the heavy lifting slaughtering enemies for him to eat and primevils for him to make motes of dark out of.
-
We get paid mostly in weapons and armor. Shaxx says as much in the new quest. If that’s so, I want a raise.
-
8 RepliesDo guardians take a shit?
-
I snort my glimmer, so Im happy.
-
2 RepliesFor bounties and shit. Just in glimmer tho. Its not like we need to buy much, since we dont need to sleep or eat. We only need to buy weapons, sparrows, and ships.
-
1 ReplyOur payment is the protection of civilians being free and able to live their lives. Throughout the years we've been employed we've taken the most vital steps to stop most harm coming to humanities last known sanctuary. The truest threat we've lost to is .. Ghoal. With all others we've kept the sanctity of city standing no matter what our foes conjured. Funny despite always being surrounded.
-
Figured the real pay was the money we earn off bounties for every one.

Edited by TheWanderer17: 1/3/2020 10:15:02 PMI just figured the citizens in the last city were broke peasants paying for us to kill stuff, cause what other choice do they have? We do have citizens right? Cause we dont ever really experience the last city, I'm not really sure. Could all just be a lie. Guardians of a dead wasteland, with a floating orb surrounded by walls and towers.

Edited by Delta of a Thousand Faces: 1/5/2020 3:11:04 PMI sure as hell do, wouldn’t be helping big blue if I didn’t. Which reminds me, need to have a talk with him ‘bout cutting my payments during the Dawning...
-
strike and event chests, i guess. plenty glimmer bursts out when you slaughter some taken or decapitate some huge hive knight.
-
1 ReplyThe issue with that "for sake of argument" is that it assumes Glimmer is used SOLELY for the purpose of currency. It has been mentioned time and again that Glimmer is fuel, materials for building/creating, and it has other uses as well. So, guardians aren't "destroying the economy".
-
2 RepliesIkora’s gate was built out of the materials guardians gathered while killing vex. The workers do get payed, I seem to remember tower work actually paying slightly more than jobs in the city. Guardians though? We are essentially pirates. We grab the change our victims had in their pockets.

Edited by Grays_KS27: 1/4/2020 1:34:38 PM“Wait, you guys are getting paid?” Lol, I’m surprised no one else said this
-
We get paid in consumables That we turn in for packages That we dismantle for shards That we buy consumables Repeat Repeat Repeat Repeat Repeat
-
Yeah with legendary shards ( that’s minimum wage) poverty. Ascend shards are for the upper 1% republican side of the vanguard.
-
Of course not! We don’t even get weapons to clean up our leaders messes, we have to earn them by killing things and stealing their glimmer! We’re basically murders and thieves.
-
1 ReplyThey get paid in sprite cranberries
-
I think we get paid in weapons and gear by the city. Glimmer comes from outside sources.
-
1 ReplyDepends on what you want, although I do give handout's sometimes. Boons of Vanguard/Crucible and all that.
Anything weird is extra.
-
We should get payed at the end of a season if we 100% the pass in silver LUL
-
3 RepliesGuardians get paid in friendship. 😒
-
2 RepliesSometimes. The Drifter pays Guardians who give him Motes, and Lord Shaxx believes even Guardians need to get paid sometimes. We do get Glimmer from looting supply caches and such. It's everywhere. In lore I'd assume there are also Guardians who supply the City with Glimmer deposits to keep foundries and industries running. Glimmer isn't just a currency, it's also a fuel and form of matter. If we were to plop all our 200,000 Glimmer into the City, I don't think it would make a significant change. Not to mention we are only ourselves. There are not canonically thousands of the Guardian running around with pockets full of Glimmer. There's just one, and other Guardians may not have as much as us.
-
I would assume they are essentially treasure hunters and sell all the blue gear they find on there adventures as well as getting paid for bounties and jobs like expaditions
-
In universe I'd presume bounties.
-
They get paid in blue engrams...
