Loot boxes and other gambling mechanics in a game with a 13+ age certificate is toxic and borderline illegal
All loot boxes in games are now actually illegal in most countries. That's part of why Bungie removed Bright Engrams, which were really only considered loot boxes if you squinted really hard, tilted your head, and blocked out logic
The game used to even have a roulette wheel equivalent called the “prismatic matrix”
You couldn't buy the prismatic matrix, so it wasn't any type of loot box or gambling mechanic. If anything, it is akin to going to a county fair and spinning the free prize wheel that could give you a pencil or koozie
This is old news but does not make it any less disgraceful
Again, most people preferred the old system. You earned engrams so fast that people rarely, if ever, had to buy anything, especially with dupe protection
Is gambling legal now for kids? Har har
-.-
Now to top it off the current “season pass” which plenty of people have paid for allows you to unlock limited time content (which you have already paid for so should be in no way limed) by either putting many hours in during that season or paying a second time for said content. The price is a snip of course at only $1 per rank and 100 ranks, now that’s RANK.
Correct. You paid for access to the full season, which included giving you the ability to unlock additional content content. If you didn't put in the time to actually do it, you can also pay outright for it without spending the time to grind. Think of it like this: You digitally rent a movie, and you start watching it. You like it, but for whatever reason you pause it and say you'll come back to it, but by the time the rental is due back, you still haven't finished it. The rental company is under no necessity to say "Hey, hang onto this and finish it whenever you like" because you paid to rent it for a certain time frame. You can pay to rent it again and finish it (akin to paying for ranks), you can straight up buy the movie instead of rent it (also akin to paying for ranks), or you can move on and rent another movie and budget your time properly to actually finish it. I play only a couple hours a night and have hit nearly rank 210 without once grinding bounties, just grabbing some for whatever activity I wanted to do. The $1/rank cost is there because, if it were purchasable for in-game currency, the people that didn't have the time to grind for ranks probably also didn't have the time to grind for currency. It can't just be fully unlocked for free at the end of the season, as the incentive to play and earn rewards would be gone. Just budget your time properly and you'll get it done. At a hyper moderate pace of one rank/hour, it would take you 100 hours of playtime. Over this roughly 2 month season, that's a little more than 1.5 hours a day. If you have the time for 3-5 hours each weekend day, you don't even have to play every day during the week

 • Fact 1 you can still pay real money for the engrams and they are still loot boxes. Please use logic in your statements not sensational nonsense. Fact 2 you could pay real money to “spin” the Prismatic matrix, I even did myself once. Fact 3 I did not pay for a rental, it did not say at the point of sale “you will receive this product for a limited time or any part of it for a limited time” At this point I honestly think you are paid if you are going to spend that long writing up a defence for a system that is clearly designed to squeeze money out of players by pressuring them into paying twice.

 • 1. I'm pretty sure this is just for the old Eververse content. If so, I doubt anyone buys it, it won't give duplicates, and isn't advertised at all. Pretty tame for "loot boxes" 2. I didn't even remember that because it was $2 and you got so many that you never needed to buy it. So moot point 3. The following is coppied straight from Bungie's Software License Agreement:
LIVE AND TIME-LIMITED GAME ELEMENTS: Your use of the Program involves interaction with Bungie’s live game environment. The Program and its live game environment change over time. Bungie does not guarantee that you will be able to participate in all events or earn all in-game achievements. Access to some Live Content may require additional purchase. Some in-game elements, including without limitation, Live Content associated with season passes, are made available to players for a limited time. Where season pass Live Content is time-limited, Bungie will use reasonable efforts to communicate this to you within the Program or otherwise. Bungie may extend the time-limit for Live Content, including season passes, at its option with or without advanced notice. Fees charged for time-limited content are based on access to the applicable content during the time period indicated at the time of purchase, and apply whether or not you actually access the content.
TL;DR: You are liable to participate in events and receive awards only for a limited time, with the knowledge that you might not be able to get every piece of content in the game
OWNERSHIP: All title, ownership rights, and intellectual property rights in and to the Program and any copies thereof are owned by Bungie. This Program is protected by the copyright laws of the United States, international copyright treaties, and conventions and other laws. This Program contains certain licensed materials, and Bungie’s licensors may protect their rights in the event of any violation of this Agreement.
TL;DR: You don't own sh*t. You pay for access to Bungie's product, much as you would pay to access a private game server or as a cover for a nightclub, but you don't own a damn thing to do with it And I wish I was paid to defend Bungie. With these forums, I'd cost Bungie so much they'd have to racket up Eververse prices just to pay me, pissing off the community and giving me a Savathun "murder battery" system for money
