Iron Banner is the worst game mode in crucible and here’s why

Iron Banner has fallen so far from its glory in D1, not just in gameplay and the mechanics of the mode, but server side and matchmaking. The player culture and behavior inside iron banner is like night and day compared to regular control and punishes too hard. Currently matchmaking is terrible, the sbmm places you against tougher opponents and gives players lower than your skill level on your team. I’ve seen this and checked it through past matches that I end up playing better opponents but get paired with lower stat players. Also matchmaking heavily punishes solo players, more often than not solo players get matched into in progress games usually ending in a bad experience due to spawning into a game and getting insta supered. This ties in with the culture and player behavior as well as the game modes mechanics and why they are bad. The mechanics of IB are too punishing and force almost one playstyle. Ape with your entire team and teamshot. Triple cap snowballs way too quickly and spawns punish you more than help you. If you aren’t using erentil/MT/recluse/shotgun then you’re fighting an uphill battle in IB. And if the other team is wolfpacking and you aren’t, you lose. Due to this playstyle based off the mechanics of IB it leads to more mercies or more stomp matches where people leave. Then places those solo players in these matches. All of this now promotes more stacks, more stacks means more wolfpacking, more wolfpacking means more stomps, more stomps means more players leaving, more players leaving means solos being punished by matchmaking. i think to fix this the triple cap mechanic needs to go, it’s too easy to catch up with supers and some lucky spawns and also too easy to get ahead with wolfpacking. Take this away and we will see more of a “control” playstyle where players hang and defend points rather than capture and move on. The point of control is to capture and defend points strategically. There Isent anything strategical about IB control. This should help with spawn kills a little more of players are focused on holding zones rather than push push push. Also make an IB freelance playlist based off connection based rather than sbmm to get players in games faster and playing, but then keep the main IB sbmm. Next they need to tweak the matchmaking to give more of a balanced result on both sides rather than unbalanced skill. Also IB is insanely laggy and all of this hurts longevity. It’s very hard right now to play IB for an extended period of time due to all these frustrating things that seems to feed off each other.

  • Sorry definitely disagree with the majority of what you’re talking about. I soloed on all 3 characters, only place in a few matches already in progress, won some of those lost some of those no big deal. As far as the lag goes, I was very surprised this particular iron banner was very minimal only seen a couple people late last night ,other than that no issues. Also very strange that I seen very few stacks as far as teams are concerned. Quite a few four stacks but not six.

        • In regards to the "tougher opponents" part. Its somewhat true. Basically it's a balancing scale. For example on the scale a super sweaty tryhard is a 10lb rock. And a deadweight "stop forcing me into pvp bungo waahhh" scrub is a 2 lb rock. Since you tip the scale soo much, to "balance" they give you weak players. To them it's a balance but in reality it's a punishment to good players.

        • Lol, IB SBMM wouldn’t put you with tougher opponents.

It’s a once a month fun crucible event with good rewards. It’s impossible for matchmaking to work as you claim it does. A freelance IB playlist would be a great addition, but not without SBMM. Sorry bud but you have to play against people at your skill level not just feast on new light players.
