Destiny social features are the worst I've seen in any online game.

Before you start reading - this is PC only issue, don't know how any of that stuff works on consoles(maybe it's somwheat better). So, Destiny is a game that requires teamwork and grouping up for the most challenging content...and it has no in-game mechanisms to do so. Seriously - online games had this shit figured out even before WoW came out. When you want to run content that requires teammates you just type in proper global chat channel and you're done. But not in Destiny, nah this game is a freaking ghost town with zero global chat options and local channels not being used anyway, you could honestly remove option to use chat in this game as it is, cause it's useless( some people type stuff for raid encounters in there for convinience, but that's about it). So since I'm the only one of my friend group that plays destiny/bought expansions I pretty much had to use lfg/find active clan. Did that during battlenet days and it was somwheat acceptable if archaic in use. I mean- you still had to tab out and launch your browser (it's 2019, hello Bungie?), but it was smooth sailing from there. But now D2 moved to Steam and the few user friendly features game had just got removed. To see any online activity of your clanmates, or be able to team up with your lfg group...you have to additionaly friend them on steam. That's just added annoyance and if you're anything like me you'll find yourself locked out of high end pve. I refuse to clutter up my friend list with random people - my steam friend is for people i actually know/care about - so notifications mean something to me. I shouldn't be forced to change that policy, because Bungie moved platforms and -blam!-ed up the last bits of user friendly stuff that was in there. Now before you downvote "cause you can just add people and be fine" stop for a moment and think about it. Do you really think this stuff is "working as intended"? Are you fine with expanding your friend list every time some random gets added to your clan and is greyed out for you? Do you honestly think that social aspects of this game are any good? For me the answer to every one of these questions is a resounding NO and I want to see Destiny improve on that front, or at least get back to pre platform swap levels. Honestly tho, I really think some kind of global chat(even if instanced) is in order.

  • On console you need to belong to a clan, use LFG or join a large PS4 D2 community.

  • I agree with every point of your post. I personally believe upgraded comms should've happened before any talk of Armor 2.0. It's been a gaming standard for almost TWO decades, specifically for any MMO/ Coop. Sadly, however, I don't think it will ever happen in Destiny 2. That ship has sailed. They take months to fix a broken gun, adding a substantial player friendly comms system seems out of reach for this crew. It's cheaper and less work to have a third party handle it.

They need to do a ton of things for this game socially. They need global chat. They need matchmaking in game for everything, They need to raise the clan member limit from 100 to 1,000. They need to start to understand when they make all the high end content team-based, they need to make it as easy as possible to get a team. Finding a group shouldn't be a mini-game.

    • It is a bit worse on console. Basically the same process involved, but it is tedious as f*ck b/c you are doing it with a controller.

    • Console is bad too. Communication is non-existent, except emotes. One thing I though they could do better was the ability to join someone out in world patrols, without having to friend them on my PSN network. Just do a quick invite, team up, run some patrols or public events and be done, nice playing with ya, see ya around. Bungie wants to make a social game, with no tools to make it easy.

Even games like Dark Souls function better than destiny, and Dark Souls has near zero communication in the game. At best you have emotes, and pots that you break to say something pre-made like "hello" or something. All of which you actually have to find. There's a message system but it's not whatsoever for direct communication. It's basically just leaving a note in the world to help or hinder people. Despite this getting players to play with for boss encounters or to just play in the area is piss easy. You take yourself to the area you want to play, see their summon sign that they deliberately left because they want to play, and then you summon them. Now do it 3 more times which is likely because people like playing the game and suddenly you are now having a good time. People even leave their sign right at the boss door because they want to play it again and help. Destiny can't even come close to doing this. They have local chat, but it's useless like you said. No one uses it, or they ignore it anyway. Not that you can ever know why people are playing in the first place. Bungie likes to reference dark souls so much, but not use the actually good design sense in it which really stings. It would solve a lot of problems and I'm fairly confident any response challenging that could be adequately handled by the design found in dark souls.

Oh trust me its just as bad on console. I honestly have no idea why theres a game chat option because in thise games entire history i have never once heard someone speak on it. I have actually had people send me msgs which they had to take time to stop, type, and send, then wait for me to get forcing me to stop, read, and reply before continuing and by that time everyones been dead 6 times. And thats just PvE. If you get a msg while in PvP its always hate mail. Nobody in this community, PC or console communicate unless its with friends they made before D1, or when they finally break down and slog through LFG sites hoping to get a team to do something. And after my experiences with LFG ill never do that crap again, ill stick to playing with the 1 other friend i have that plays. If it dont MM its not worth it. There is the guided games feature, but yeah that flopped and could be removed and maybe .0001% of the communtiy would notice. And even they wouldnt care. But i bet if bungie removed it theyed somehow mess it up and cause yet another game breaking glitch we would get blamed for. So yeah, its the same on console. Only we dont have the little chat window the everyone in that instance sees and if we did the IQ of the people using it would collectively equal a baked potato with autism. *edit* Just realised your name was badpotato. In no way was that "autistic baked potato" comment aimed at you lol

      • It's even ingrained in the game mechanics themselves. Get XXX kills with YYY, or Get XXX kills of YYY on ZZZ. Best to farm solo ... Look at the Lumina quest step, where you have to kill an invader before they kill anybody on your team. For a few days after the quest was released, you join gambit and 3 people on your team are just on the lookout for an invader and not really playing. So much fun ... Gambit again, you get a team of 3 archers grinding for Hush and not really playing towards objectives. Same for plenty of Crucible stuff, all the time you see people do weird things, use weird guns or play in a weird way, just to finish grind of which asks for stuff like "Get a melee kill on guardian that just defeated you, while standing on one leg and tapping your forehead with middle finger".

The reality is bungie is very concerned about many jobless scrubs who mistake time wasted with skill to leave once they realize they’re getting their ass wiped by 11y old.

        • You dont need to add anyone to your steam friends list to join their game. Type in your chat /id and your Steam ID will appear. Highlight, copy and paste it. Then people can type /join [steam id] to join you. What the game needs is an info tab for chat commands, that's it.

        • Destiny (1) didn't ship with voice chat. https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/12398/7_Destiny-Update--11172014 Guided Games came a few years later (on D2) https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/46308 and 2 years after that we got low tier NF with matchmaking.
lol @ Bungie.
• I agree with every point made. But I would also like to add one. Not so much the game itself but one directed at lfg groups. L f g stands for looking for group. It does not stand for looking for people maxed out and only want to play highest end content. It means no matter what level light you are you should be able to have a group to play with in a game where social interaction and teamwork net the best rewards.

From a console player... I'm already blocking messages from anyone not on my friend's list due to PVP hate mail from comp opponents and team mates (ok, more often from team mates). I do not need more communication with random people in game. I'm always opting out of chat. There are plenty of LFG options out there, including the one built into Xbox Live. Back in D1 it was different, but then I wasn't doing Trials much. I did meet most of my friends list through in game communication. Comp. PVP made me turn all that off.

Somebody from Bungie needs to go play Planetside 2 and see how in game social features should be done...e.g. LFG... It works simply and efficiently... Really!
