The one thing Destiny 2 did better than Destiny 1 was have a solid consistent story. New Light has completely ruined that. The D1 opening is excellent and I love that aspect of it but as soon as you get to the tower everything falls apart. After being introduced to the Vanguard you're taken to Earth and meet Devrim. This is all fine so far. But every Adventure is available right from the start and someone who has never played Destiny will just do those thinking that's the "story". But they contain dialog from characters that talk to you like you're old friends and reference things that you supposedly did. But as a New Light player you have no idea who those characters are. What's worse is you can't repeat Adventures at will, so you play them when you don't know or care what's going on and by the time you finally find the campaign (which is buried in Holiday's inventory for some godawful reason) you've already done most or all of them and none of those events will have mattered to you at all.
The other problem with having every adventure available from the start is there is no sense of accomplishment or surprise. D2's narrative was crafted in such a way that Adventures became available only when they were relevant. And it felt like a reward to suddenly have new icons pop up on the map. It felt like you were unlocking a secret which then led to backstory and a means of fleshing out the characters you already knew by then.
The way this should go is: once you get to the tower and meet the vanguard you should unlock the Red War campaign. It should be on the director like Forsaken and Shadowkeep are, and your quest marker should direct you to it. Maybe you can have a little line of text that implies you will be reliving events from the past if you're so concerned about a persistent online world. The moment you start the Red War , all the adventures and planets should lock and become available as they become relevant the way the story was designed to preserve that narrative cohesion. You can warn the player that this is going to happen so they don't think they just missed out on content. AFTER finishing the Red War campaign it should direct you to the Curse of Osiris campaign and then after that it should direct you to the Warmind campaign etc. This preserves the narrative integrity of the game as it was meant to be experienced (so new players don't get confused and leave) and still allows you to get right to new content if you choose and still have all the adventures and such available for the free-to-play only crowd.
tl;dr post Shadowkeep Destiny 2's story is a MESS after the intro and it needs to be fixed if you want new players to stick around.

1 ReplyThey made the change to allow more options to be accessible early so you can start playing with friends sooner. If you are a Destiny veteran and want to have a friend try out the game, they are not going to invest hours upon hours to get through the basic campaign before they can start playing other more relevant activities. New light is meant to get you into the core game as quick as possible, which is exactly what you want in a F2P game.
