Hopefully everyone knows the history behind the usage of the word and why it's extremely frowned upon to use it. Personally, I would never use it, especially with the hard 'r' at the end. I've also never heard the word used in any other way other than to degrade and demean someone. I've only heard it being used in extremely negative ways, most often from people who view themselves superior over everyone that isn't of the same skin color.
not used in a harmful way
If your intent is not racist - that is, if you’re not using it to convey hatred towards blacks, then no - it’s not racist. It can still be insensitive if you don’t know how people around you will perceive it, however.

As long as you have an N-word Pass you're good.

hard R = racist. soft A = how people in the ghetto talk. 🇺🇸

Growing up, I was always really confused by the concept of cuss words. Every time I used one, there was always some adult around to scold me and say “You can’t use those words, young man!” But not once did any of them tell me why. Nor could they. Because when it comes down to it.. nobody actually knows. They were told by their elders not to say them, so now they tell you not to say them too. It goes no deeper than that. But with the “N word”, everyone knows exactly why it carries so much weight. We all know its history. We all know the pain and absolute horror that accompanied it. So we all know why we should eliminate it from our vocabulary. Doesn’t matter what context it’s used in. Just one old man’s opinion

10 RepliesEdited by RandyDaGod: 11/1/2019 4:29:08 PMHard R is always racist... Soft A is for black people only. It's cultural and not for non black people. These are the rules. Also we wouldn't call it the "N Word" if it wasn't bad to say.

8 Replies-er or -a? It doesn't make a difference to me. I think if you say the word you are just ignorant. But to some people the ending of the word makes the difference I guess.
-
It depends on the context you use it in.

It's a slippery slope. The word was primarily used as a term for "disrespect" and "hatred" but nowadays the term is used so loosely (music, tv , movies) that almost everyone says It and now it's just used as a greeting and a term of endearment. In my opinion? It just depends on who says it, the context of how it's being used and, the variation of the word.

14 RepliesSaying hi these days is racist. Look, you have your friends that know you, know you are not racist and they tell you it is ok, that is one thing, but others don't know you and it is not a great habit to get into. Worked with this one wannabe rapper. White boy from the mean streets of the suburbs. He had his boyz that he was with and they were all cool with him saying that. Then he upset this dude we worked with from Africa and the dude started getting in his face. Well, Wonder Bread says chill n---a, we cool. It took 3 dudes to hold this dude from Africa back so he did not lose his job by flattening Wonder Bread. Dude didn't know everyone and he dropped the word. It nearly cost him his ass because he was in the habit of saying it. Don't say it and you won't have to worry.

6 RepliesGoing to be honest I don’t think it should be racist in general, but I don’t know. I just avoid cussing in general so...

3 RepliesIf you have the N-Word pass absolutely. In all seriousness, the N-Word should be reserved for black friends, if they give you the permission.

1 ReplyDepends on the context.
The N Word is inherently harmful. There is no situation where it isn't harmful. A better question; "Is there ever a time the benefits of invoking hundreds of years of brutal dehumanization outweigh the harm such invocation causes?"
^Wyoming

15 RepliesIf you even have to ask, then don't say it. It's inappropriate no matter the skin tone of whomever says it. It's an automatic trigger word, and has no need of being used anywhere or anytime. It really has no purpose other than to degrade. And no, people of color saying have no free pass in using it either. It either is ok for everyone, or it's not ok for anyone. No double standards.

NOBODY should be able to use that word Not even african americans themselves.

Edited by H1vac: 10/31/2019 8:22:12 PMDon’t call a black person that unless you are great friends. Even then, don’t get upset if the black person calls you out on it. Black folk can refer to black folk like that. They might laugh to each other, might not too.
-
I would never say it because of it’s origin and meaning, but I think certain races able to say things but others can’t is a bizarre thing. It has nothing to do with who you actually are. It’s just because of genetics. If I were born a black man, it would be ok? That just sounds kinda weird.
